Until now, design of Earth Retaining is practiced by 2 dimensional analysis for convenience of analysis and time saving. However, the construction field is 3 dimension, in this study, practised the 3 dimensional analysis which can reflect the field condition more exactly the scope of earth retaining wall, and researched about the effective and economical way of design, compared and reviewed with the results, by practising both the 2 and 3 dimensional analysis. existing 2 dimension. the depth of excavation, depth of embedded and soil condition. As result, under the whole conditions, more displacement came to appear to the value as result of 3 dimensional analysis more than the result of 2nd dimensional analysis. Accordingly, the displacement by the 2 dimension analysis is underestimated. Moreover, results of 2 and 3 dimensional analysis, there is no difference at displacement, when the depth of embedded is 0.5H and 1.0H, but Displacement of 1.5H is smaller than 0.5H, 1.0H. That is, the bigger the depth of embedded becomes, the displacement of Earth Retaining Wall appeared smaller. The displacement of earth retaining wall according to depth of excavation appeared bigger, when the depth of excavation is increased. In the meantime, when the soil condition is different, in the 2 dimensional analysis, the displacement appeared biggest, in case of the clay layer, but in the 3 dimensional analysis, in the beginning of excavating, the displacement of earth retaining wall appeared bigger in case of clay layer, but as excavating is in progress, the displacement of both compound soil layer and sand layer appeared big.
The conventional reinforced earth retaining wall has the connector system to fix the reinforcement and block. However, this system defect may cause the crack of block and the rupture of reinforcement due to the stress concentration near the face of reinforced earth retaining wall. Hence, the new connector system which was able to allow the settlement of reinforcement was developed in this study and a test was carried out in the study area which is divided into the conventional reinforced earth retaining wall and reinforced Earth Retaining Wall driving the settlement. As the results of field monitoring in situ, the ratio of tensile force calculated at maximum value on contiguous portion of front block showed that the settlement type decreased the stress concentration near the face of front block greater than the conventional type.
In order to understand evaluation of the seismic stability of a reinforced earth retaining, we made chambers of 1:10 (the ratio of the miniature), considering the law of similarity based on drawings of representative cross sections. And we measured an increase in acceleration, earth pressure, and displacement after applying Hachinohe wave (long period), Ofunato wave (short period), and artificial wave, complying with the domestic standards, in order to evaluate the external stability of the reinforced earth retaining wall during earthquake based on the measurements. As a result, the unreinforced earth retaining wall collapsed at 2 g of seismic acceleration. But the reinforced earth retaining wall was evaluated to ensure proper stability as well, with respect to the earth pressure gauge, the increments of earth pressure tend to be raised significantly in the upper than the lower and showed a similar characteristic of behavior in previous theory.
This paper presents a kinematic limit analysis for passive earth pressure of rigid retaining structures considering the unsaturation of the backfill. Particular emphasis in the current work is focused on the effects of the spatial change in the degree of saturation on the passive earth pressure under different steady-infiltration/evaporation conditions. The incorporation of change of effective unit weight with degree of saturation is the main contribution of this study. The problem is formulated based on the log-spiral failure model rather than the linear wedge failure model, in which both the spatial variations of suction and soil effective unit weight are taken into account. Parametric studies, which cover a wide range of flow conditions, soil types and properties, wall batter, back slope angle as well as the interface friction angle, are performed to investigate the effects of these factors on the passive pressure and the corresponding shape of potential failure surfaces in the backfill. The results reveal that the flow conditions have significant effects on the suction and unit weight of the clayey backfill, and hence greatly impact the passive earth pressure of retaining structures. It is expected that present study could provide an insight into evaluation of the passive earth pressure of retaining structures with unsaturated backfills.
To study the influences of tunneling on the earth pressure and ground settlement when the tunnel passes through the adjacent underground retaining structure, 30 two-dimensional model tests were carried out taking into account the ratios of tunnel excavation depth (H) to lateral width (w), excavation width (B), and excavation distance using a custom-made test device and an analogical soil. Tunnel crossing adjacent existing retaining structure (TCE) and tunnel crossing adjacent newly-built retaining structure (TCN) were simulated and the earth pressure variations and ground settlement distribution during excavation were analyzed. For TCE condition, the earth pressure increments, maximum ground settlement and the curvature of the ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/B, but positively related to H/s and H/w. For TCN condition, most trends are consistent with TCE except that the earth pressure increments and the curvature of ground settlement curve are negatively related to H/w. The maximum ground settlement is larger than that observed in tunnel crossing the existing underground structure. This study provides an assessment basis for the design and construction under confined space conditions.
Knowledge of seismic earth pressure against rigid retaining wall is very important. Mononobe-Okabe method is commonly used, which considers pseudo-static approach. In this paper, the pseudo-dynamic method is used to compute the distribution of seismic earth pressure on a rigid cantilever retaining wall supporting dry cohesionless backfill. Planar rupture surface is considered in the analysis. Effect of various parameters like wall friction angle, soil friction angle, shear wave velocity, primary wave velocity, horizontal and vertical seismic accelerations on seismic earth pressure have been studied. Results are presented in terms of tabular and graphical non-dimensional form.
In this study, the behavior of self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles was investigated by using a numerical study and field tests in urban excavations. This earth retaining wall can provide stable support against lateral earth pressures through its use of stabilizing piles that provide passive resistance to lateral earth pressures arising due to ground excavations. Field tests at two sites were performed to verify the performance of instrumented retaining wall with stabilizing piles. Furthermore, detailed 3D numerical analyses were conducted to provide insight into the in situ wall behavior. The 3D numerical methodology in the present study represents the behavior of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles. A number of 3D numerical analyses were carried out on the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles to assess the results stemming from wide variations of influencing parameters such as the soil condition, the pile spacing, the distance between the front pile and the rear pile, and the pile embedded depth. Based on the results of the parametric study, the maximum horizontal displacement and the maximum bending moment significantly decreased when the retaining wall with stabilizing piles is used. Moreover, the horizontal displacement reduction effect of influencing parameters such as the pile spacing and the distance between the front pile and the rear pile is more sensitive in sandy soil, with a higher friction angle compared to clayey soil. In engineering practice, reducing the pile spacing and increasing the distance between the front pile and the rear pile can effectively improve the stability of the self-supported earth retaining wall with stabilizing piles.

Generally, the retaining wall is becoming unstable as the height is higher. On the other hand, the retaining wall with the relieving platform is more stable and more economical than any other type of retaining wall, because the relieving platform the reduce the lateral earth pressure. In this study, numerical analyses were carried out for 15 cases varying with the type of retaining wall, length and location of the relieving platform and the backfill type. From the numerical analyses, the reduction of the lateral earth pressure was checked and the results of numerical analyses were compared with that of model tests and theoretical equations. As the results of this study, the lateral earth pressure of the retaining wall with the relieving platform is considerably less than that of cantilever wall. And the of magnitude of the lateral earth pressure is affected by the length and location of relieving platform and the backfill type.
Based on limit equilibrium principles, this study presents a theoretical derivation of a new analytical formulation for estimating magnitude and lateral earth pressure distribution on a retaining wall subjected to seismic loads. The proposed solution accounts for failure wedge inclination, unit weight and friction angle of backfill soil, wall roughness, and horizontal and vertical seismic ground accelerations. The current analysis predicts a nonlinear lateral earth pressure variation along the wall with and without seismic loads. A parametric study is conducted to examine the influence of various parameters on lateral earth pressure distribution. Findings reveal that lateral earth pressure increases with the increase of horizontal ground acceleration while it decreases with the increase of vertical ground acceleration. Compared to classical theory, the position of resultant lateral earth force is located at a higher distance from wall base which in turn has a direct impact on wall stability and economy. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the computations of lateral earth pressure distribution based on the suggested analytical method.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traffic loads on retaining wall stability. There is insufficient research on lateral earth pressure on retaining wall due to traffic load. In addition, limited detailed designs of retaining wall for transportation including number of lanes of road, magnitudes of axle loads, and vehicle formations are available. Because the lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall due to traffic loads is a function of the lateral distance from retaining wall, the wall height, and the locations of lanes, the analysis of lateral load on retaining wall from traffic loads is performed with direct or indirect reflection of these factors. As a result of the analysis, lateral earth loads induced from traffics can be considered negligible if the lateral distance of traffic load from wall exceeds the height of retaining wall. Therefore, it is practically reasonable to consider traffic loads within a lateral distance between wall and traffic load of the height of retaining wall.
