We revisit the 1.3-year (yr) signals observed on the Sun, in the interplanetary space, and in the Earth's magnetosphere to study the coupling among signals from the three regions for about forty years (1970--2007) covering three solar cycles 21, 22, and 23. For this, we make dynamic spectra of datasets including three different regions. From this, we estimate the peak frequency around 1.3 yr for each region and the corresponding band power. We found that coherent power only appears during 1987-1995 and the coherent behavior is found only in the interplanetary space and Earth, not in the Sun. Although the solar surface magnetic field shows significant power around 1.3 yr, their peak frequencies are statistically different from those of the outer regions, which make us to dismiss the existence of coherence among the three regions. But it is notable that the peaks in band power corresponding to the 1.3-yr period are clearly simultaneous in the interplanetary space and Earth.
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is the measurement of the magnetic fields produced by electrical activity in the brain, usually conducted externally, using extremely sensitive devices such as Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID). MEG needs complex and expensive measurement settings. Because the magnetic signals emitted by the brain are on the order of a few femtoteslas (1 fT = 10-15T), shielding from external magnetic signals, including the Earth's magnetic field, is necessary. An appropriate magnetically shielded room is very expensive, and constitutes the bulk of the expense of an MEG system. MEG is a relatively new technique that promises good spatial resolution and extremely high temporal resolution, thus complementing other brain activity measurement techniques such as electroencephalography (EEG), positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MEG combines functional information from magnetic field recordings with structural information from MRI. The clinical uses of MEG are in detecting and localizing epileptic form spiking activity in patients with epilepsy, and in localizing eloquent cortex for surgical planning in patients with brain tumors. Magnetoencephalography may be used alone or together with electroencephalography, for the measurement of spontaneous or evoked activity, and for research or clinical purposes.
We performed high-resolution three-dimensional global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to study the interaction between the Earth's magnetosphere and a prolonged steady southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) (Bz = -2nT) and slow solar wind. The simulation results show that dayside magnetic reconnection continuously occurs at the subsolar region where the magnetosheath magnetic field is antiparallel to the geomagnetic field. The plasmoid developed on closed plasma sheet field lines. We found that the vortex was generated at the magnetic equator such as (X, Y) = (7.6, 8.9) RE due to the viscous-like interaction, which was strengthened by dayside reconnection. The magnetic field and plasma properties clearly showed quasiperiodic variations with a period of 8-10 min across the vortex. Additionally, double twin parallel vorticity in the polar region was clearly seen. The peak value of the cross-polar cap potential fluctuated between 17 and 20 kV during the tail reconnection.

Magnetic anomalies in the Dokdo and it's surroundings were investigated with respect to structure and origin of the Dokdo and surrounding seamounts. After normal and diurnal correction of measured magnetic data, crossover correction was applied to reduce errors between sets of magnetic anomalies. The errors from crossover operation result in decrease of about 51%, from 62.2 nT to 30.1 nT in standard deviation. Reduction-to-the-pole, second vertical derivative and analytic signal processing were applied to explore magnetic anomaly signatures in detail. Magnetic anomalies are most complicated in the 1st-Dok seamount, show SWW-NEE linear pattern in the 2nd-Dok seamount and lower to the 3rd-Dok seamount. Different magnetic anomaly patterns in three seamounts imply that three volcanic seamounts were formed at different times and are composed of rocks that were produced in different conditions. It seems that the 3rd-Dok seamount was first to form and followed by the 1st-Dok seamount. The complicated magnetic and second vertical derivative anomaly patterns in the 1st-Dok seamount may be due to subsidiary cones around crater or the presence of intruded magma bodies below sea surface and the Dokdo is probably a marginal subsidiary part of crater.
In this paper we examine a total of 16 dipolarization events that were observed by THEMIS spacecraft in space close to geosynchronous orbit, r < ${\sim}7\;R_E$. For the identified events, we examine the characteristics of the plasma flows and associated bubbles as defined based on $pV^{5/3}$, where p is the plasma pressure and V the volume of unit magnetic flux. First, we find that the flow speed in the near-geosynchronous region is very low, mostly within a few tens of km/s, except for a very few events for which the flow can rise up to ~200 km/s but only very near the dipolarization onset time. Second, the bubble parameter, $pV^{5/3}$, decreases by a much smaller factor after the dipolarization onset than for the events in the farther out tail region. We suggest that the magnetic dipolarization in the near-geosynchronous region generates or is associated with only very weak plasma bubbles. Such bubbles in the near-geosynchronous region would penetrate earthward only by a small distance before they stop at an equilibrium position or drift around the Earth.
The declination is an important concept because it is the underlying concept to understand the plate tectonics and also is used to decide one's location by using the compass and the map in real life. So this study surveys the description of declination being used in six of the seventh curriculum earth science II textbooks followed by the investigation of the possible of misconceptions that the highschool students might have. Utilizing an inventory of key concept, this study examines the actual misconceptions of highschool students, and investigates the relationship between misconceptions and textbooks. As a result, highschool students possess some misconceptions particularly with respect to the magnetic north pole which is caused by a lack of explanation about declination and by a wrong illustration. Therefore we suggest that detailed explanations of declination with non-dipole effect and precise illustrations be provided in the textbook for students th have a better understanding about declination.
Using magnetic field and plasma moment data obtained by THEMIS satellites(A, D, and E), we selected 203 fast flow events accompanied by dipolarization in the near-Earth region( X(GSM) = -7 ~ -12 RE) and statistically examined their properties. It was found that most of the fast flows show the maximum velocity between 1 minute before dipolarization onset and 2 minutes after onset and proceed earthward and duskward. We also found that only the flows with low velocity of less than 400 km/s are observed at X > -8 RE, while the high velocity flows(as well as low velocity flows) are observed at the further tailward region(X < -8 RE). And most of the tailward flows are slow regardless of distance at X(GSM) = -7 ~ -12 RE. On the other hand, if we consider the fast flow as a bubble (Pontius and Wolf, 1990), the entropy parameter, PV5/3 is an important factor to describe the plasma sheet dynamics. Thus we investigated the relationship between the flow velocity and the amount of change in PV5/3 before and after dipolarization onset and found out that the dipolarizations with more depleted entropy parameter tend to show higher flow velocity. Also we examined how the magnetic field at geosynchronous orbit responds to the fast flow accompanied by dipolarization in the near-earth plasma sheet, using the measurements from GOES 11 and 12 statellites. We found that most of the fast flows do not reach geosynchronous orbit as suggested by Ohtani et al. (2006).
Some observational features on the July 5, 1995 substorm event are presented using the data from the Geotail satellite which was located at near-Earth plasma sheet, ${X}_{GSE}$ ∼ $-9.6R_{E}$, and quite close to the onset sector. Near-tail magnetic field reveals the typical dipolarizations starting ar ∼ 11-4 UT until ∼ 1113 UT. During the interval, two dipolarizations occur: First dipolarization is not strong and accompanies only weak(<150km/s) earthward/dawnward plasma flows, and in the second dipolarization that follows shortly, rather large amplitude magnetic fluctuations are seen, but it initiates with no significant earthward flow. The earthward bursty flow with a maximum speed of > 450km/s was observed, but delayed by ∼ 1 min with respect to the second dipolarization initiation. These features are in conflict with the flow-braking scenario for the substorm. Rather they fit better in the near-tail current disruption scenario.
Various electromagnetic fluctuations are observed in the upstream of Earth's bow shock. Properties of plasmas are important in determining the development of the fluctuations. In this study we analyze the phase space distribution functions of plasmas measured by the Cluster spacecraft to understand how the fluctuations develop. Plasmas in the upstream of Earth's bow shock often consist of multiple components, especially when the fluctuations exist. In addition to the solar wind beams, backstreaming ion beams and diffuse ions are also often observed separately or simultaneously. The solar wind beams are not much perturbed even within the fluctuations. The diffuse ions are more than 10 times hotter than the solar wind beams and the backstreaming beams intermediate between them. The distribution functions of the diffuse and backstreaming ions are anisotropic to the magnetic field. Thus, they may be responsible for the fluctuations associated with temperature anisotropy. We will discuss about the thermalization processes and the relationship between the fluctuations and plasmas.
This study proposes a human body orientation tracking system by inertial and earth magnetic sensors. These sensors were fused by indirect Kalman filter. The proposed tracking system was configured and the filter was implemented. The tracking performance was evaluated with static and dynamic tests. In static test, the sensor was fixed on the floor while its static characteristics was analyzed. In dynamic test, the sensor was held and moved manually for 30 seconds. The dynamic test included x, y, z axis rotations, and elbow flection/extension motions that mimic drinking. For these dynamic motions, the tracking angle error was under $4.1^{\circ}$ on average. The proposed tracking method is expected to be useful for various human body motion analysis.
