Chub mackerel, Scomber japonicus, larvae and juveniles were reared from hatching to 35 days after hatching (DAH), and the development of their digestive systems was histologically investigated. The larvae were initially fed on rotifers and Artemia nauplii starting around 19 DAH, and thereafter on Artemia nauplii, fish eggs, and a formulated feed mixture. The primitive digestive system differentiated at 3 DAH; the digestive tract was distinctively divided into the buccopharyngeal cavity, esophagus, stomach, air bladder, intestines, and rectum. The gastric gland and pyloric caeca first appeared at 5 and 7 DAH, respectively. The stomach was divided into cardiac, fundic, and pyloric regions in the preflexion phase. The number of gastric glands and pyloric caeca, as well as the volume of the gastric blind sac increased markedly, with development continuing into the juvenile stage. The precocious development of the digestive system during the larval period might be related to the early appearance of piscivory, which is able to support high growth potential. The organogenesis results obtained for this precocial species represent a useful tool to aid our understanding of the physiological requirements of larvae and juveniles to ensure optimal welfare and growth under aquaculture conditions, which will improve current rearing practices of this scombrid species.
Reproductive traits of Palaemon gravieri such as embryo size, number of embryo (fecundity), incubation period, larval development mode, larval development period, larval survival and larval growth were described and compared to analyze the correlation among those traits. Embryo volume is a primary factor determining other ensuing reproductive features. Egg volume was $0.042mm^3$ in the first developmental stage. Embryo volume in P. gravieri was comparatively small which is indicative of great number of embryo (y = 3.0161x + 0.0185 $R^2$ = 0.74 positive isometric relationship) and relatively long incubation period. Larvae survived from zoea 1 to post-larvae and it took 45 days at $22^{\circ}C$. Survival rate of the larvae was rather great in the early stage and thereafter steadily decreased. Daily growth rate of larvae in P. gravieri at $22^{\circ}C$ was 0.0195 mm on average. They grew steadily as time went by. Incubation period was between 10-14 days at $22^{\circ}C$. Larval development mode was almost complete planktotrophic. PNR (point of no return) appeared to be the third day on average. Survival rate of larvae without feeding declined rapidly between 3 and 4 days. Larval development period and stage frequency were 23-30 days and 11 stages which imply prolonged larval period and high mortality. The pattern of brood production followed fast successive parturial pattern. Most ovigerous female had mature ovary when they performed parturial molt soon after hatching (larval release).

We observed the osteological development in larvae and juveniles of Korean spotted sleeper Odontobutis interrupta bred in the laboratory in April 2014. Immediately after hatching, the prelarvae, which were about 4.27 mm long, showed ossification of the premaxillary bones in the upper jaw and the dentary and articular bones in the lower jaw. At 7.11 mm, the larvae showed complete fusion of the post-cleithra and ossification of the scapulae with the appearance of one hole. At 8.65 mm, the larvae showed ossification of seven ribs from the third abdominal vertebra and an increase in the length of the neural spine and hemal spine. The number of caudal fin rays increased to 19. At 11.9 mm, the juveniles showed ossification of three procurrent rays on the side of the parhypural bone as well as ossification of two procurrent rays on the side of the epural bone, indicating the complete ossification of all spicules.
The hairtail (currently recognized as Trichiurus lepturus in Korea) is one of the most important commercial fish species in Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. Because the amount of catches has been steadily declining, we must determine the early life stages of the hairtail from the viewpoint of resource management. Furthermore, the taxonomic status of the hairtail is unclear among ichthyologists, potentially creating management difficulties. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare morphological and molecular information on eggs, larvae, and adults of hairtail from Korea with that of T. lepturus from the Atlantic Ocean, and to review the taxonomic status of the hairtail. A total of 510 base pairs of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences of 12 eggs, 2 larvae, and 11 adults of the hairtail from the Korean waters clearly matched those of Trichiurus japonicus adults (d = 0.000-0.014) from the East China Sea rather than those of T. lepturus (d = 0.100-0.110) from the Atlantic Ocean. Our results also showed that larvae of the Korean hairtail are different than those in the Atlantic Ocean in having no melanophores along the ventral edge of the lower jaw. Therefore, our findings suggest that the hairtail in the Korean waters may not be T. lepturus, but T. japonicus.

We describe here the mass death of predatory carp, Chanodichthys erythropterus, in Korea induced by plerocercoid larvae of Ligula intestinalis as a result of host manipulation. The carcasses of fish with ligulid larvae were first found in the river-edge areas of Chilgok-bo in Nakdong-gang (River), Korea at early February 2016. This ecological phenomena also occurred in the adjacent areas of 3 dams of Nakdong-gang, i.e., Gangjeong-bo, Dalseong-bo, and Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo. Total 1,173 fish carcasses were collected from the 4 regions. To examine the cause of death, we captured 10 wondering carp in the river-edge areas of Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo with a landing net. They were 24.0-28.5 cm in length and 147-257 g in weight, and had 2-11 plerocercoid larvae in the abdominal cavity. Their digestive organs were slender and empty, and reproductive organs were not observed at all. The plerocercoid larvae occupied almost all spaces of the abdominal cavity under the air bladders. The proportion of larvae per fish was 14.6-32.1% of body weight. The larvae were ivory-white, 21.5-63.0 cm long, and 6.0-13.8 g in weight. We suggest that the preference for the river-edge in infected fish during winter is a modified behavioral response by host manipulation of the tapeworm larvae. The life cycle of this tapeworm seems to be successfully continued as the infected fish can be easily eaten by avian definitive hosts.

Dragonet fish (Callionymidae), living in benthic upper 900 m of all subtropical, tropical and temperate oceans, comprises 200 species in 20 genera worldwide, of which 18 species in 6 genera occur in Korea. Although dragonet fish plays an important role in linking between top predators and lower trophic levels, there are only few studies about their early life history. Herein, we present molecular and morphological data on larvae and juveniles of Bathycallionymus kaianus (Günther, 1880) collected from the Korean waters. During 2016 to 2018, one preflexion larvae [2.69 in total length (TL)], three flexion larvae (3.65 and 4.77 mm TL), six postflexion larvae (6.07 and 7.94 mm TL), and three juveniles (10.81 and 12.26 mm TL) were collected in the East Sea, Korea Strait, and Jeju Island using Bongo net. Of them, 13 individuals were identified through molecular markers (COI or 16S rRNA) and morphologically described. The larvae of B. kaianus are well distinguished from other species of Callionymidae in melanophore distribution, body shape and development of preopercular spine. It was very similar to larvae of two Repomucenus species, R. valenciennei and R. virgis, but was clearly distinguished in melanophore distribution, preopercular spine development, and head shape.
The occurrence of Oriental Tobacco Budworm (OTB), Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee), larvae in early and late planted tobacco fields showed tow or three distinct peaks. The parasitoid, Campoletis chlorideae Uchida, occurred for a short period with one peak following th second peak of OTB in early planted fields. However, in late planted fields, the parasitoid occurred as long as the OTB larvae were abundant. The OTB larval density was higher in late planted fields than in early planted fields. Among four varieties of tobacco, the OBT larval occurrence was relatively high on NC-744 throughout the season. However, more parasitoid cocoons were found in Burleyf-21 and NC-82. The seasonal occurrence of the larval parasitoid, C. chlorideae, assessed by an OTB larval release and recovery method, continued from late June to early September and relatively higher abundance was noticed from early July to late August. In a field cage evaluation of C. chlorideae as a biological control agent of OTB larvae, higher rate of C. chlorideae release (4 females/2$\m^2$) resulted in higher larval parasitism (86.1%) and less leaf damage (8.7%) in tobacco. The leaf damage by OTB larvae was significantly high in the untreatment plot (23.2%) and the lowest damage (1.6%) was recorded in the chemical treatment plot.
This study examines the morphological features of larval and postlarval shells of the paedomorphic bivalve Crenella decussata Montagu, 1808 from the Sea of Japan. During the early morphogenesis of the shell of C. decussata the following characteristics appear: prodissoconch I -the anterior and posterior provincular teeth, a broad primary ligament pit located on the chondrophore; nepioconch - the anterior and posterior juvenile teeth, primary lateral teeth, fine commarginal and radial sculpture. Larvae of C. decussata distinctly differ from other mytilid larvae by a D-shaped shell, absence of umbo, astraight hinge margin, and homogeneous fine-grained sculpture without co-marginal lines of growth. These shell characters indicate lecithotrophic development of this species. Some morphostructures are revealed which might be used in crenellin taxonomy.
The incubation time required for hatching of O. ocellatus were investigated through the processes of egg and embryonic developments by the dissecting microscopic and visual observations. And differences in ecological characteristics of the plankton mode of life or the benthic mode of life according to total numbers of the suckers on each short arm of the hatched juvenile larvae of O. ocellatus were studied by comparisons with other octopodidae species. Compared with the recent a few results reported by other researchers associated with the incubation time required for hatching by female adult mother of O. minor (73-90 days after spawning at $20.9-21.5^{\circ}C$ ranges), in this study, the incubation time required for hatching by female adult mother of O. ocellatus was 56-57 days after spawning at $11.0-20.4^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the incubation time required for hatching by female adult mother varied with Octopodidae species. In this studies, each ovarian egg laid by a female was connected to an egg string attaching to the surface of the wall or bottom of vacunt shell of Rapana venosa. Egg and embryonic developments of this species were studied in the indoor aquaria, in the specific gravity ranging 1.024-1.025. the hatched juvenile of O. ocellatus is 10.3 mm in the mean total length and 4.5 mm in mantle length, and each of its short arms has 18-20 suckers. The just hatched juvenile larvae of O. ocellatus enter the benthic mode of life (benthic larval stage) after hatching. In particular, regarding differences in ecological characteristics of the mode of life according to total numbers of the suckers, O. vulgaris may not need to have many suckers because they enter the planktonic mode of life after hatching, however O. ocellatus may need to have many suckers, because they should adapt to the benthic mode of life. And also the just hatched juvenile larvae of O. minor (bearing many suckers more than O. ocellatus) enter the benthic mode of life (benthic larval stage) after hatching. Therefore, the total number of the suckers on each short arm of the hatched juvenile larvae can be used for determining whether an octopus species has planktonic larval stages or benthic larval stage (benthic mode of life). In particular, The intracohort cannibalism phenomena appeared at the hatched juvenile larval stage because the larval stage of O. ocellatus and O. minor enter into the benthic larval stage in the early stage, unlike entering into the plaktonic larval stage in other Octopus species such as O. vulgaris: at this time, the early hatched larvae fed the late hatched larvae (they are the same species and almost same ages). Therefore, the intracohort cannibalism pheneomena occur in the just hatched juvenile stage of only O. ocellatus and O. minor.
The developments of overwintering larvae of the peach fruit moth, Carposina niponensis Walsingham, were studied in Suweon. Among fully grown larvae leaving from apple fruit, the earliest diapause larva was observed late July, about $50\%-diapause$ in middle August and $100\%-diapause$ in early September. Induction of the diapause seemed to have relationships with the time of oviposition: the incidents of the diapause started with the larvae grown from the eggs which had been laid in late June or late July depending on the prevailing weather condition. The termination of the diapause seemed to be in early December, and almost all of the larvae incubated after January were pupated. For the breakage of the diapause, it required chilling period more than one month, and the most effective temperature seemed to be $5\~10^{\circ}C$, while the temperature lower than $0^{\circ}C$ seemed to be inhibitory, if not at all. The overwintered larvae started to pupate in middle May, and the developments of the over-wintered larvae were affected by the temperature as well as the moisture contents of soil in the spring. The dry condition of soil increased the mortality of the developing larvae.
