A Case Study on Engineering Education using Intuition and Verbal Repetition (직관과 구술반복을 활용한 공학교육 사례 연구)

  • Applying intuitive learning method on engineering education, especially for the mechanical engineering, is hardly found from the previous case studies and is not easily proved its beneficial verification. Verbal repetition is also rarely used to investigate its positive effects on educational methodology for both science and engineering disciplines. To prove the education effects of these two methods; we used intuitive thinking time period at the beginning of each lecture and let students repeat the concepts and the equations verbally. These two methods were related to the subjects of each lecture, and were used for students to try to draw engineering thinking from natural phenomena that they could easily experience in daily life. The methods could help them to memorize theoretical ideas. We investigated the effects of intuition and verbal repetition methods by comparing the scores of final exam with those of midterm exam. The results revealed significant improvement; 77.6% of the students achieved higher score in their final exam compared to midterm exam. We plan to investigate qualitative contributions of intuition and verbal repetition methods to the students' achievement for the further research.

  • Breast self-exam is easiest, safe and cost effective to be recommended as an important method for early detection of breast cancer. This experimental research with non-equal control design was to develop the efficacy expectation program for breast self-exam based on Bandura's self-efficacy information source. The study objects selected from two local churches in Busan. Twenty from S church were selected as a study group, twenty from D church as a control group. Efficacy expectation promoting program was based on Bandura's efficacy promoting source and was two hour lecture including slide, video tape, demonstration, pamphlet. After this, there were individual interviews with them and consultations through telephone f or verbal persuasion on the weekly basis between the first week and the fifth week. The effect from the experiment were measured on the first week after education and on the fifth week. Data from control group was collected during the period from Jan 11, 2 001 to Feb 15, 2001 and data from study group was collected during the period from Jan 12, 2001 to Feb 16, 2001. Measurement instrument for this study was developed by the author with the advice of specialist in order to measure self-efficacy and breast self-exam practice. Data analysis was done by using SPSS/10.0 PC program $with^2-$ test. t-test and ANCOVA. Proved results for hypothesis were as follows. 1) It was supported that "Study group educated by efficacy expectation promoting program has higher score in change rat e of self-efficacy than control group." (1 week after education F=18.395, p=.000 5 weeks after education F=28.972, p=.000) 2) It was supported that "Study group educated by efficacy expectation promoting program has higher score in change rate of exam practice than control group." (1 week after education F=37.984, p=.000 5 weeks after education F=28.972, p=.000) In conclusion, efficacy expectation promoting program for breast self-exam developed by this study may increase s elf-efficacy and breast self-exam practice.

A Study of the Status of Occupational Health Management in Small-Scale Enterprises- Kwang-ju City and Chonnam Province - (소규모사업장 보건관리실태 연구 - 광주·전남 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the status of occupational health management and the degree of recognition about the occupational health management of employees 248 small-scale enterprises which have been managed by the small-scale enterprises health care management support institution in 1999, were selected for study, in Kwang-Ju City. 98 employees were selected in 116 industries of them to grasp recognition of employees about the occupational health management. ► The Status of Occupational Health Management 1. Of the sample industries, 62.1 percent employed eleven to twenty-nine workers. Of the sample workers, 72.1 percent occupied workers who were engaged in the production line. 2. Environment evaluation was made on 82.7 percent of the sample industries and general exam made on 66.5 percent and specific health exam done on 73.4 percent. 3. The harmful factors in the sample industries were found to lie noise, dust, solvent, heavy metal, etc. 4. In general health exam 1,774 workers were participated and 148 workers got the result of above grade C and were diagnosed as having the problems with digestive system (63.6%), circulatory system(20.6%). etc. ► The Degree of Recognition about The Occupational Health Management of Employees. 1. Respondents were mainly in the twenties (42.9%), males(69.1%), duration of working period of five to ten years(24.0%), office workers(51.0%), monthly income under one million(55.7%). 2. Recognition of employees about the occupational health management consists of workplace environmental evaluation, health education, health exam and protector management. Their recognition on health education showed high score (mean 3.1), but generally the score was low(mean 2.9).

  • This study intends to analyze the learning effect of asynchronous online classes used in education fields around the world after the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we compared and analyzed the lecture evaluation and final exam questions of the HTML5 web programming course, which was conducted offline in 2019 and asynchronously online in 2020 due to COVID-19. As a result of the analysis, no significant difference was drawn between the two teaching methods in the lecture evaluation score and final exam score. However, contrary to concerns about the application of online classes to the entire curriculum, the lecture evaluation and final exam scores of the video-based online classes were high, suggesting the possibility that online classes could be more effective than offline classes if well organized and managed in the future.

Test Case Grouping and Filtering for Better Performance of Spectrum-based Fault Localization (결함위치식별 기법의 성능 향상을 위한 테스트케이스 그룹화 및 필터링 기법)

  • Spectrum-based fault localization (SFL) method assigns a suspicious ratio. The statement is strongly affected by a failed test case compared to a passed test case. A failed test case assigns a suspicious ratio while a passed test case reduces some parts of assigned suspicious ratio. In the absence of a failed test case, it is impossible to localize the fault. Thus, a failed test case is very important for fault localization. However, spectrum-based fault localization has difficulty in reflecting the unique characteristics of a failed test because a failed test case and a passed test case are input at the same time to calculate a suspicious ratio. This paper supplements for this limitation and suggests a test case grouping method for more accurate fault localization. In addition, this paper suggested a filtering method considering test efficiency and verified the effectiveness by applying 65 algorithms. In 90 % of whole methods, the accuracy was improved by 13% and the effectiveness was improved by 72% based on EXAM score.

Reliability of essay-writing scoring in university entrance exam (논술 채점의 신뢰도에 관한 연구)

  • Essay-writing, first introduced to Korean university entrance exams in 1994, is gaining its weight year by year. Especially from 1997 when Nationwide Education Reform System begins, it will be a key component of student selection criteria at Korean universities. Essay-writing's future, however, will not be that smooth unless it shows necessary validity and reliability. This study is on reliability of Essay-writing scoring, mainly from the experience of University K case. To secure solid reliability in Essay-writing scoring for the 1995 University Entrance Exam, the authors started research from the 1994 Autumn Pre-exam which was administred to potential applicants of University K following year. Total of 1,254 students took Essay-writing exam and, subsequently, their essays were graded by two professors independently. The result was not so good. The correlation between two scores was 0.27[0.54] with Cronbach alpha 0.43[0.70] for Humanity-Social Science [Natural Science-Engineering] field. So, some action for reliability improvement was inevitable. The authors considered and investigated following two alternatives. Alternative 1 [A1] : Essays are to be graded three tiems independently at the 1995 University K Entrance Exam. Scores will be given as the average of three scores. Alternative 2 [A2] : Essays are to be graded twice independently, followed by a possible third grading only if two gradings show "significant" defference. Scores are given as the third score if done or the average of first two scores otherwise.otherwise.

A Study on the Validation of Electroneuronography as Predicting Factors for Peripheral Facial Palsy Prognosis (말초성 안면신경마비의 예후인자로서 Electroneuronography(ENoG)의 유용성에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives : This study was performed in order to investigate the effectiveness of electroneuronography as predicting factors for peripheral facial palsy prognosis. Methods : Data were gathered with 32 Bell's palsy patients. The grade of Bell's palsy were measured 2 times; first medical exam and 4 weeks after treatment, with Lucille Daniels's Muscle test. We converted the grade system use on five rating scale. The significance of treatment verified with paired t-test used on first medical exam and 4 weeks after treatment score and predicting factors of electroneuronography verified with simple regression test. Results : The improvement score were statistically significant different before and after treatment(p<.001). Mean axonal loss according to electroneuronography showed a statistically significant correlation in predicting peripheral facial palsy (P<0.01). Conclusion : Axonal loss as determined by electroneuronography has statistical significance as predicting factors for peripheral facial palsy prognosis.

Self-Directed Learning Evaluation Using Fuzzy Grade Sheets

  • This paper is about the use of existing evaluation methods, which evaluate learning determined by the score of an exam, which is either a multiple-choice type or single choice type question. These scores don't show the objective evaluations that cause some negative opinions about the scores. In this paper, we propose that the evaluation of the methods of self-directed learning use the triangle-type function of the fuzzy theory so that the learner can objectively evaluate their own learning ability. The proposed method classifies the result of learning into three fuzzy grades to calculate membership, and evaluate the result of an exam according to the final fuzzy grade degree as applied to the fuzzy grade sheets.

Effects of Self-Directed Learning Readiness on Academic Performance and Perceived Usefulness for Each Element of Flipped Learning

  • This study aims to examine the effects of self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) on academic performance and the perceived usefulness for each elements of flipped learning. Based on their SDLR scores, 69 students were assigned to a high SDLR group and a low SDLR group. Academic performance was measured by the completion rate of a pre-class online learning and the final exam score, and perceived usefulness for each element of flipped learning was measured by a survey designed by the researcher. For academic performance, the high SDLR group showed a significantly higher completion rate than the low SDLR group, but no significant difference was observed in their final exam scores. Students in the high SDLR group perceived in-class student-centered activities as more useful than those in the low SDLR group. Additional qualitative analyses indicated that students needed more support from instructors and well-prepared peers. Finally, this study suggested that more examination on the various learning characteristics that may influence the effectiveness of flipped learning should be done.

A Study on the Variables of Success in the National Dental Hygienist Licence Examination at D College (D대학교 치과위생사 국가시험 합격의 변인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the variables of success in the national dental hygienist licence examination at D college. The subjects in this study were 120 dental hygiene juniors at D college located in Gangwon Province. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS WIN 13.0 and a R2.13.2 program, and $x^2$(Chi-square) test, regression analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and logistic regression analysis were utilized. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. There was a tendency that the pass rate was higher among the students who were more satisfied with their major, whose academic standing was higher and who scored higher in trial examinations. 2. There was a positive correlation between academic standing and trial exam scores. 3. When their academic standing and satisfaction level with major were the same, an increase of one point in trial exams led to a 1.141-fold rise in the probability of passing the national exam. In this study, trial exam scores were identified as the variable to exert the largest influence on success in the national dental hygienist qualification exam. Therefore more intensive guidance should be provided for students who make a preparation for the national exam yet score low in trial exams.
