  • The protonation of RuH(NO)(Cyttp) resulted in the formation of $[RuH_2(NO)(Cyttp)]^+$ which is characterized as a classical cis-dihydried complex. This complex is fluxional and the intramolecular process involving a molecular hydrogen complex is proposed. This mechanism was further supported by the reactivity of this complex toward neutral 2-electron ligands. On the other hand, it failed to detect the existence of $[RuH_2(NO)(etp)]^+$ probably due to instability of the complex but the crystal structure of $[Ru(PMe_3)(NO)(etp)]^+$ formed by the protonation of RuH(NO)(etp) followed by the addition of $PMe_3$ was determined to have a trigonal bipyramidal structure with a linear NO in the equatorial plane and a facial etp ligand. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/n, with unit cell dimensions a = 14.130(2), b = 21.026 (3), c = 14.760 (1) ${\AA}$, ${\beta}$ = 97.88 $(l)^{\circ}$ V = 4344 ${\AA}^3$, Z = 4, R = 0.046 and $R_w$ = 0.056 for the 4779 intensities with $F_o^2 > 3{\sigma}(F_0^2)$ and the 440 variables.

  • Catalytic hydrogenation of ketones and aldehydes by RuH(NO)$L_3$ ($L_3$: $PPh_3$, PhP($CH_2CH_2PPh_2$)$_2$(etp)) was investigated to examine the reaction mechanism and the competence of hydridonitrosyl complexes as catalysts for organic synthesis. RuH(NO)$L_3$ showed catalytic activity for the hydrogenation and the activities of catalysts were dependent on the steric and electronic factors. The less the steric demands of the substrates become, the more activity the catalysts show. For the electronic effect, the more the partial positive charge on the carbonyl carbon atom in ketones becomes and the more the double bond character of carbonyl group in aldehydes becomes, the more active the catalysts are. These results reflect the difference of reaction mechanisms of two substrates, ketones and aldehydes. Catalytic activities of RuH(NO)(etp) and RuH(NO)($PPh_3$)$_3$ in the presence of extra $PPh_3$ toward hydrogenation showed the existence of a reaction pathway accompanied with the change of the bonding modes of NO ligand. The roles of excess $PPh_3$ change with increase of the mole ratio of $PPh_3$ to catalysts; prevention of ligand dissociation from comlexes → bases → ligands. The activity of RuH(NO)(etp) was lower than that of RuH(NO)($PPh_3$)$_3$ toward the hydrogenation of the same substrates mainly due to the structural difference. These catalysts showed the selectivity toward olefin hydrogenation over carbonyl groups in the competitive reaction.

  • This study was to investigate the vitrification method for cryopreservation technique of bovine in vitro fertilization(IVF) embryos. The morphological appearance and viability following vitrification of IVF bovine blastocysts and expanded blastocysts were examined. Embryos obtained 6, 7, 8 or 9 days after IVF were vitrified in both 40% ethylene glycoI(EG) plus 0.3M trehalose and 20% polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP) in DPBS(ETP, Exp. 1) and ETP solution added 0.375M dextrose (ETPD, Exp. 2). The viability of Days 6, 7, 8 and 9 vitrified /thawed embryos at 24∼48 h culture after thawing was 11.9%, 19.8%, 23.4% and 15.3% in ETP(Exp. 1), and 34.6%, 54.5%, 37.9% and 13.0% in ETPD(Exp. 2), respectively. The viability of vitrified embryos produced from the culture days after IVF did not differ in Exp. 1, but significantly differ in Exp. 2(P<0.05). The viability of blastocysts and expanded blastocysts significantly differed(P<0.05) in 15.2% and 23.3%(Exp. 1), and 25.0% and 45.8%(Exp. 2). The result of Exp. 1 was similar to that of Exp. 2 on the viability of embryo according to developmental stages, but ETP solution plus sugar(dextrose) was increased the viability of vitrified embryos. In Experiment 3, The viability of vitrified embryos was not different between 12% and 20% PVP concentrations in ETP solution according to culture days or developmental stages. To investigate the effect of addition of sugar, two type of carbohydrates and a mixture of cryoprotectants for vitrification on the survival of bovine IVF embryos, bovine Days 7 to 9 blastocysts and expanded blastocysts were cryopreserved in either 20% glycerol plus 20% EG, 0.375M sucrose and 0.375M dextrose (GESD, Exp. 4) or 20% glycerol plus 20% EG, 0.3M trehalose and 20% PVP(GETP, Exp. 5) in DPBS. Survival rates of Day 7, 8 and 9 embryos at 24∼48h culture after thawing were 71.4%, 94.6% and 40.5% in GESD, and 59.5%, 81.5% and 62.5% in GETP, respectively. Hatching rates of Day 7, 8 and 9 embryos after thawing were 28.6%, 35.1% and 16.2% in GESD, and 27.0%, 33.3% and 18.8% in GETP, respectively. These results indicates that a mixture of cryoprotectants(glycerol and EG) and addition of sugar can improve the survival rates of the bovine IVF embryos(Day 7 or 8) vitrified, and the expanded blastocyst embryos are more suitable for vitrification than early blastocysts stage.

  • Analysis of bacterial communities based on their 16S rDNA sequences revealed the predominance of Proteobacteria (Aeromonas sp., Acinetobacter sp. and Thaueraamino aromatica sp.) and uncultured bacterium in activated sludge from the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of Mother Dairy, Calcutta (India). Each isolate was used for bioremediation of dairy wastewater with simultaneous conversion of nitrogenous pollutants into ammonia. A consortium developed using seven of these isolates and three Bacillus strains from different environmental origins could reduce 93% nitrate with simultaneous production of ammonia (626 ㎍/100 ml) within 20 h in non-aerated, immobilized conditions as compared to 82% nitrate reduction producing 2.4 ㎍/100 ml ammonia in 96 h with extensive aeration in a conventional ETP. The treated ammonia-rich effluent could be used instead of freshwater and fertilizer during cultivation of mung bean with 1.6-fold increase in grain yield. The ETP with the surrounding agricultural land makes this process a zero liquid discharge technology for using the biofertilizer generated. In addition, the process requires minimal energy supporting sustained environmental health. This method is thus proposed as an alternative approach for small-scale dairy ETPs.

  • This paper reports the results obtained from the Langmuir probe (LP) and Electron Temperature Probe (ETP) experiments on the sounding rocket KSR-II (Korean Scientific Rocket - II) which was launched on Jun 11, 1998 at 10:00 KST from Tae-An peninsula (37$^{\circ}$ N, 126$^{\circ}$ E). The instruments successfully measured the electron density, electron temperature, and the floating potential at altitudes of 73km to 130km. While the electron temperature measurement is not easy in this region, since the temperature is very low and the contamination effect of the probe may give rise to a problem, we were able to obtain a reasonable electron temperature profile by employing two independent methods, the pulse modulated Langmuir Probe and Electron Temperature Probe. The preliminary results show that electron density increases sharply at about 90km, and forms a peak at 102km. The density profile is roughly consistent with IRI (International Reference Ionosphere)95-model or PIM (Parameterized Ionospheric Model) results except that the peak density appears at 110km in the model and model electron density is slightly lower than the observed one. Electron temperature obtained from ETP fluctuates between 200$^{\circ}$K and 700$^{\circ}$K, an effect presumably coming from the wakes developed by LP, and it tends to increase with the altitude, which is consistent with the LP results.

  • In this presentation I will review the expanding thermal plasma chemical vapour deposition (ETP-CVD) technology, a deposition technology capable of reaching ultrahigh deposition rates. High rate deposition of a-Si:H, ${\mu}c$-Si:H, a-SiNx:H and silicon nanocrystals will be discussed and their various applications, mainly for photovoltaic applications demonstrated. An important aspect over the years has been the fundamental investigation of the growth mechanism of these films. The various in situ (plasma) and thin film diagnostics, such as Langmuir probes, retarding field analyzer, (appearance potential) mass spectrometry and cavity ring absorption spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry to name a few, which were successfully applied to measure radical and ion density, their temperature and kinetic energy and their reactivity with the growth surface. The insights gained in the growth mechanism provided routes to novel applications of the ETP-CVD technology, such as the ultrahigh high growth rate of silicon nanorystals and surface passivation of c-Si surfaces.

  • Two kinds of sweet potato puree were prepared with Benihayato cultivar of yellow sweet potato with or without $\alpha$-amylase enzyme treatment. Chemical and rheological properties of enzyme-treated puree were different from those of control puree. Reducing sugar content and iodine value increased by $\alpha$-amylase enzyme treatment, while alcohol insoluble solids and viscosity decreased by enzyme treatment. However, the changes of carotenoid content were not significantly different. Hunter-b-values(yellowness) were 27.19 and 23.54 for no enzyme-treated puree(NTP) and enzyme-treated puree(ETP), respectively. Hunter-a values(redness) were 2.24 and 6.05 for NTP abd ETP, respectively. Content of total carotenoid of canned puree heated at 13$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min decreased by 59 percents.
