ETRI AI Strategy #5: Nurturing AI Professionals (ETRI AI 실행전략 5: AI 전문인력 양성)

  • As artificial intelligence (AI) technology becomes more important, the demand for AI talent is increasing. However, there is a shortage of AI talent around the world, and it is difficult to secure. Therefore, it has become more important to nurture the AI workforce. The private sector and government in Korea and other countries are making an effort to cultivate AI talent, and ETRI has proposed "Nurturing AI Professionals" as ETRI AI Strategy #5 to meet both internal and national demands for AI talent. ETRI has suggested three key tasks to implement AI Strategy #5. The first one is to create a "top-notch AI talent training project: the ETRI AI Academy" to strengthen AI research capabilities. The second one is "nurturing AI engineers specialized in local-based industries: the ETRI AI Business School" to help supply the necessary AI workforce in the industry. The third one is the "contribution to AI education service for people: ETRI AI Literacy" to raise the public's understanding and utilization of AI.

  • The method and process of research and development (R&D) is changing when we develop artificial intelligence (AI), and the way R&D results are dispersed is also changing. For the R&D process, using and participating in open-source ecosystems has become more important, so we need to be prepared for open source. For product and service development, a combination of AI algorithm, data, and computing power is needed. In this paper, we introduce ETRI AI Strategy #4, "Expanding AI Open Platform." It consists of two key tasks: one to build an AI open source platform (OSP) to create a cooperative AI R&D ecosystem, and another to systematize the "x+AI" open platform (XOP) to disperse AI technologies into the ecosystem.

  • In this paper, we introduce ETRI AI Strategy #1, "Proactively Securing AI Core Technologies." The first goal of this strategy is to innovate artificial intelligence (AI) service technology to overcome the current limitations of AI technologies. Even though we saw a big jump in AI technology development recently due to the rise of deep learning (DL), DL still has technical limitations and problems. This paper introduces the four major parts of the advanced AI technologies that ETRI will secure to overcome the problems of DL and harmonize AI with the human world: post DL technology, human-AI collaboration technology, intelligence for autonomous things, and big data platform technology.

  • There is no denying that computing power has been a crucial driving force behind the development of artificial intelligence today. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors and computing systems are perceived to have promising industrial value in the market along with rapid technological advances. Therefore, success in this field is also meaningful to the nation's growth and competitiveness. In this context, ETRI's AI strategy proposes implementation directions and tasks with the aim of strengthening the technological competitiveness of AI semiconductors and computing systems. The paper contains a brief background of ETRI's AI Strategy #2, research and development trends, and key tasks in four major areas: 1) AI processors, 2) AI computing systems, 3) neuromorphic computing, and 4) quantum computing.

  • In this paper, we introduce ETRI AI Strategy #3, "Leading Future Technologies of Network, Media, and Content." Its first goal is "to innovate AI service technology to overcome the current limitations of AI technologies." Artificial intelligence (AI) services, such as self-driving cars and robots, are combinations of computing, network, AI algorithms, and other technologies. To develop AI services, we need to develop different types of network, media coding, and content creation technologies. Moreover, AI technologies are adopted in ICT technologies. Self-planning and self-managing networks and automatic content creation technologies using AI are being developed. This paper introduces the two directions of ETRI's ICT technology development plan for AI: ICT for AI and ICT by AI. The area of ICT for AI has only recently begun to develop. ETRI, the ICT leader, hopes to have opportunities for leadership in the second wave of AI services.

  • Because of the development and spread of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, new security threats and adverse AI functions have emerged as a real problem in the process of diversifying areas of use and introducing AI-based products and services to users. In response, it is necessary to develop new AI-based technologies in the field of information protection and security. This paper reviews topics such as domestic and international trends on false information detection technology, cyber security technology, and trust distribution platform technology, and it establishes the direction of the promotion of technology development. In addition, the development of international trends in ethical AI guidelines to ensure the human-centered ethical validity of AI development processes and final systems in parallel with technology development are analyzed and discussed. ETRI has developed AI policing technology, information protection, and security technologies as well as derived tasks and implementation strategies to prepare ethical AI development guidelines to ensure the reliability of AI based on its capabilities.

  • As the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology spreads to various industrial sectors, diversity in AI utilization rapidly increases, creating rich user experience. In addition, AI is required to solve various social problems through the use of public data. The spread of AI utilization across all sectors will continue, covering such industrial and public demands. This article examines the domestic and international trends in AI utilization technologies and establishes the direction of research and development (R&D), which is highly consistent with Korea's AI policy. ETRI, which leads AI's national R&D, has used its experience to establish AI R&D implementation strategies as well as technology roadmaps for the utilization of AI to improve individual quality of life, continuous growth in society, industrial innovation, and the solutions to public societal problems. In addition, it has derived tasks and implementation strategies for developing AI utilization technologies in 10 major areas including medical services.

  • The UK is a service superpower with solid and well-developed financial and insurance services, including FinTech. Much of the UK's service industry is digital and becoming increasingly so. Primary sources constituting the UK's comparative advantage in services could be factored in business conditions driving innovation in the digital age and world-leading digital competitiveness. Therefore, this study examined the UK's digital policies. This research's focal strands were the UK's digital strategy, national artificial intelligence strategy, and digital trade objectives. As an essential insight for policymakers and other stakeholders, this study proposes that government policies in response to the digital economy are inextricably linked, leading to a critical driver for the UK's digital competitiveness.

  • The purpose of this article is to abstract Industries 4.0 Top documents and express the fundamental strategies. It is clear that disruptive AI + ICBM technology will change the entire industry, and therefore each country is making a strategy to prepare for the future. Example cases are Japan's Monozukuri, Germany's Industry 4.0, the USA's Reshoring, and China's Made in China 2025. I would like to introduce Industrial Industries 4.0 in Germany because Germany used the industrial industries' term first and Korea has as many SMEs as Germany has. The main characteristic is that it can be applied to the size of the individual SMEs rather than the national size.

  • Metaverse provides a simulated environment that can produce various values while conducting economic, social, and cultural activities in a digital society where the virtual and real worlds are connected. In this paper, the direction of technological progress is predicted by analyzing the characteristics of Metaverse services and their businesses. Technologies and latest researches for the realization of the Metaverse service platform are also explored. In addition, Metaverse Ethics to construct a sustainable Metaverse and Metaverse UX to increase users' service participation are also discussed. Moreover, the R&D promotion strategy for Metaverse services are presented.
