  • Electrostatic Precipitators have been used widely in industry, and play an important role in environmental protection. Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) can be operated with a high collection efficiency and low pressure drop. Pulse energization is a technique to cope with high resistivity dust, and this results in lower power consumption. In this paper, Pulse energization ESP to use subway station air clean in subway station, design and test a pulse power supply for ESP.

  • The emission gas from meat grilled restaurants has unpleasant odor and sticky particulate matters (PM) in form of oil mist. This affects the residents living nearby. In oder to decrease the odor and PM, electrostatic precipitators (ESP) were installed at several restaurants by support of Seoul metropolitan government and emission characteristics of PM and odor were investigated. The removal efficiency of odor and PM at before- and after-ESP was that total hydrocarbon (THC), NH3, H2S, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde were not much decreased. Total suspended particles (TSP) emitted from the vent was below the value of 7 mg/m3 regardless of the concentration of before-ESP and removal efficiency was in the range of 64 ~ 86%. The ratio of PM1.0 to PM10 of emission gas was over 0.9. So it was revealed that most PM of emission gas was PM1.0. The PM concentration in the air of the street near the vent was higher than another street due to the emission gas and the PM of indoor air of restaurant grilling meats was measured very high compared to outdoor air. So it needs more powerful ventilation of indoor air.

  • An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has a low pressure drop and a high collection efficiency but its collection efficiency can be reduced due to dust accumulation on the collection plates during long-term operations. In order to maintain the initial dust collection efficiency, it is necessary to periodically clean the collection plates. The common cleaning methods are using physical impacts or water sprays. These cleaning methods can lead to damage to the collection plate or generate wastewater. Herein, we implemented an electrodynamic screen (EDS) for ESP cleaning and evaluated its surface cleaning performance of particles. The EDS is an electrostatic system that can electrostatically repel particles on surfaces, allowing it to clean the ESP without causing damage and wastewater generation. Our evaluation included the analysis of the effects of AC voltage characteristics, electrode configuration and environmental conditions on the cleaning performance of the EDS with the aim of achieving effective surface cleaning. It has been demonstrated that activating the EDS cleans up to 65% of the particles on the surface, which indicates about 94% of our target cleaning zone.

  • 본 연구에서는 마이크로 탄소 브러쉬 하전부와 평판형 금속 집진부로 구성된 저전력 소비형 2단형 전기집진기를 개발하였고, 특히 인체 위해성이 높은 $0.3{\mu}m$급의 미세한 오일 미스트에 대한 인가전압 및 소비전력별 집진효율 특성을 실험연구를 통해 고찰하였다. 하전부의 인가전압에 따른 단위 입자당 하전율과 입경별 집진효율을 측정함과 동시에 이론에 근거한 계산값과 비교해 보았으며, 9 주 동안의 장시간 운전을 통해 지속적으로 포집된 오일 미스트에 의한 전기집진기의 성능을 열유체역학적인 관점에서 변화를 조사하였다.

  • In this study, we developed a separated two-stage electrostatic precipitator applicable in a subway air conditioning system. We studied the characteristics of collection efficiency of 0.3 ㎛ particle and ozone generation at different charger sizes and gaps of collector plates. Also, we compared the performance of the two-stage ESP to the MERV 10 filter with the removal efficiency of 10% used in actual subway air conditioning system. The maximum collection efficiency of 0.3 ㎛ particle was 93% at A charger (600 mm×250 mm×600 mm) and 84% at B charger (330 mm×280 mm×330 mm). Especially, with voltages applied to chargers with collection efficiency of about 80% or more, the ozone concentration of two different chargers was 5 ppb to 35 ppb. Finally, the filter quality of the collector developed in this study was 400 times higher than that of the MERV 10 filter. Therefore, it was concluded that the two-stage ESP could be a promising PM removal device suitable for subway air conditioning system.

전기집진기의 10 nm 급 초미세 나노입자의 하전 및 집진 특성 (Characteristics of Charging and Collection of 10-nm-Class Ultrafine Nanoparticles in an Electrostatic Precipitator)

  • 전기집진에서의 10 nm 급 초미세 나노입자의 하전 및 집진 특성을 파악하였고, 나노입자의 확산효과와 비교해 보았다. 나노입자의 하전율과 확산손실 효과의 지배력에 따라 전기집진기에서의 나노입자 집진효율이 결정되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 10nm 급 영역에서는 입자 크기가 작아질수록 지속적으로 집진효율이 감소하였다. 10 nm 이하의 영역에서는 나노입자의 부분적 하전효과가 전기집진기 내의 확산 손실 효과보다 지배적인 것을 알 수 있었다. 10 nm 이하의 나노입자에 대하여 집진효율 실험 결과가 단극 확산 하전 이론을 적용한 입자하전율 계산 결과와도 잘 일치하였다.

  • The electrostatic precipitator (ESP) has been used for degrading atmospheric pollutants. These devices induce the electrical forces to facilitate the removal of particulate pollutants. The ions travel from the high voltage electrode to the grounded electrode by Coulomb force induced by the electric field when a high voltage is applied between two electrodes. The ions collide with gas molecules and exchange momentum with each other thus inducing fluid motion, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) flow. In this study, for the simulation of electric field and EHD flow in ESPs, an open source EHD solver, "espFoam", has been developed using open source CFD toolbox, OpenFOAM(R) (Open Field Operation and Manipulation). The electric potential distribution and ionic space charge density distribution were obtained with the developed solver, and validated with experimental results in the literature. The comparison results showed good agreement. Turbulence model is also incorporated to simulate turbulent flow; hence the developed solver can analyze laminar and turbulent flow. In distributions of electric potential and space charge, the distributions become distorted and asymmetric as the flow velocity increases. The effect of electrical drift flow was investigated for different flow velocities and the secondary flow in a flow of low velocity is successfully predicted.

광폭 전기집진기의 집전특성에 관한 연구 - I. 집진판 간격과 방전극의 영향 -

  • This study investigates the electrical and collection characteristics of a wide plate spacing electrostatic precipitator (ESP), using a pilot-scale one. Electrical operating characteristics and collection efficiency were measured for various shapes of discharge electrodes. The collection plate spacing ranged from 300 to 550 mm. Results of electrical characteristic and collection efficiency tests as a function of collection plate spacing, discharge electrode type, applied voltage, and particle diameter were obtained. Increasing the collection plate pitch and altering the corona electrode geometry was found to increase the collection efficiencies without increasing input power requirement. The best efficiency is achieved for the discharge electrode of twisted pin type.
