In this study, the electrorheological (ER) fluid was used as finishing agent. Since the apparent viscosity can be controlled by an electric field, the ER fluid can be one of efficient materials in finishing processes. To finish small 3-dimensional structures such as the aspherical surface in optical elements, the possible arrangement of a tool, part and auxiliary electrode was described. We examined the influence of the addition of a few abrasive particles on the performance of the ER fluid by measuring yield stress and observed the behavior of abrasive particles in the ER fluid by a CCD camera, which had been also theoretically predicted from the electromechanical principles of particles. On the basis of the above results, the steady flow analysis around the rotating micro tool was performed considering the non-uniform electric field. Finally, borosilicate glass was finished using the mixture of the ER fluid and abrasive particles and material removal with field strength and surface roughness were investigated.
Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. ER effects arise from electrostatic forces between the starch particles dispersed in the electrically insulating silicone oil, induced when an electric field is applied. Yield stress of the fluids were measured on the couette cell type rheometer as a function of electric fields. This paper presents performance analyses of four types of the two parallel-plate. Which have different electrode length and width but same electrode area. On the basis of the pressure drop and flow rate analysis. Four types of the two parallel-plate are designed and manufactured. Using ER fluid, it is possible to directly interface between electric signals and fluid power without moving parts.
The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.
This paper presents some inherent characteristics of a semi-active variable damper featuring electro-rheological (ER) fluid. The damping force of the damper can be selectively adjusted or controlled by employing electric field to the ER fluid domain. This is possible owing to the pressure drop across the piston occured by field-dependent variable yield stress of the ER fluid. This is fundamentally different than the performance of a conventional adjustable viscous damper. To demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority over the conventional one, the proposed damper is incorporated with a suspension system. A quarter car model with the suspension system is formulated and represented by a state equation. By choosing numerical values based on realistic package size, power requirements and suitable ER properties, the performance characteristics of the suspension system are obtained and evaluated in both frequency and time domains. The effects of constant electric field and on-off controlled electric field which relates to the damping force are also examined.
This paper presents a proof-of-concept investigation on an active tension control using an ER (electro-rheological) brake actuator. Firstly, an ERF (electro-rheological fluid) which has an inherent reversible feature from Newtonian fluid to Bingham fluid upon applying an electric field is composed, and its property is tested to obtain intrinsic parameters of the Bingham model. An appropriate size of the ER brake is manufactured on the basis of the Bingham model, and dynamic characteristics of the brake are experimentally identified. After formulating a governing equation of motion of the tension control system, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve a certain desired level of tension. Both simulation and experimental works are undertaken in order to demonstrate the efficiency and feasibility of the proposed active tension control method.
The Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid has been used to the ultraprecision polishing of single crystal silicon as new polishing slurry whose properties such as yield stress and particle structure changed with the application of an electric field. In this work, it is aimed to find the effective parameters in the ER fluid on material removal in the polishing system whose structure is similar to that of the simple hydrodynamic bearing. The generated pressure in the gap between a moving wall and a workpiece, as well as the electric field-induced stress of the mixture of ER fluid-abrasives, is evaluated experimentally, and their influence on the polishing of single crystal silicon is analyzed. Moreover, the behavior of abrasive and ER particles is described.
This paper presents vibration mode control of a smart plate containing electro-rheological (ER) fluid between elastic face layers. Following the composition of a silicone oil-based ER fluid, the ER fluid-embedded plate partitioned into four sections is constructed. Then, an extensive modal test is experimentally carried out to identify field-dependent modal parameters such as mode shapes and natural frequencies of the structure with respect to different are subjected to electric fields. The distilled results from the experiment exhibit that the ER fluid can be effectively employed in a continuous fashion to tune modal behaviors of the distributed parameter systems,
In this paper, making the best use of the features of the electro-rheological (ER) valve, a two-port pressure control valve using ER fluids is proposed and manufactured. The ER-Valve characteristics are evaluated by changing the intensity of the electric field and the number of electrode. As only with electrical signal change to the ER-Valve in which ER fluid flowing, ER fluid flow is controlled, so development of simple ER-Valves have been tried. The ER-Valves and pressure drop check method are considered to be applied to the fluid power industry. Using the manufactured pressure control valve, a one-link manipulator with FHA (Flexible Hydraulic Actuator) is driven. As a result, it is experimentally confirmed that the pressure control valve using ER fluids is applicable to use in driving actuator. If it applies characteristics of the ER fluids, it will be able to apply in the control system for the ER Valve which occurs from industrial controller. After having durability test, shear stress increased regularly because of starch particles crushed by pump and particle size that was almost the same. Moreover, Ra of copper electrode increased about 1.56 times rather than before those of performing durability test, and Rz increased about 2.2 times.
The electrorheology of the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension in silicone oil was investigated. HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension showed a typical ER response upon application of an electric field. The shear stress for the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension exhibited an electric field power of 2.0. The experimental results for the HMDA coupled chitosan succinate suspension was found to be an anhydrous ER fluid.
This paper describes the properties of temperature-viscosity characteristics of hydrous and anhydrous electro-rheological fluids containing starch and titanium particle in silicone oil ER effects arise from electrostatic forces between the starch particles and titanium particles dispersed to the electrically insulating silicone oil induced when electric field is applied ER fluids under electric field control have been found to provide resonable estimates of ER fluid viscosity variation characteristics. Yield shear stress of the ER fluids were measured the couette cell type rheometer as a function of electrlc fields. The outer cup is connected to positive electrode(+) and bob becomes ground(-). The electrie field is applied by high voltage DC power supply. In this experiment shear rates were increased from 0 to 200 $s^{-1}$ in 2 minutes. The ER fluid's viscosity change is very small and stable at the temperature range of $40^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. Therefore, applications of a new ER fluid to control systems application are suitable.
