Performance Investigation of a Continuously Variable ER Damper for Passenger Vehicles (승용차용 연속가변 ER댐퍼의 성능연구)

  • This paper presents performance investigation of a continuously variable ER(Electro-Rheological) damper for passenger vehicles. A dynamic model of the damper is formulated by incorporating electric field-dependent Bingham properties of the ER fluid. The Bingham properties are experimentally obtained through Couette type electroviscous measurement with respect to two different particle concentrations. The governing equation of the hydraulic model treating three components of fluid resistances;electrode duct flow, check valve flow and piston gap flow, is achieved via the bond graph method. A prototype ER damper is then designed and manufactured on the basis of parameter analysis. The damping forces of the system are experimentally evaluated by changing the intensity of the electric field, the particle concentration and the electrode gap.

  • This paper presents a position control of a platform at the seaport cargo handling system. After brief description of the operating principles of the cargo handling system, the governing equation of the moving platform is derived. The equation is described in the state space model, and a robust H$_{\infty}$ controller to achieve position tracking of the moving platform. which can carry 200ton of containers, is formulated. In the synthesis of the controller, the weight of the container is treated as uncertain parameter. Both regulating and tracking control responses are analyzed for the loading and unloading procedures of the proposed automatic cargo handling system.

  • As a functional material, shape memory alloy (SMA) has attracted much attention and research effort to explore its unique properties and its applications in the past few decades. Some of its properties, in particular the electrical resistance (ER) based self-sensing property of SMA, have not been fully studied. Electrical resistance of an SMA wire varies during its phase transformation. This variation is an inherent property of the SMA wire, although it is highly nonlinear with hysteresis. The relationship between the displacement and the electrical resistance of an SMA wire is deterministic and repeatable to some degree, therefore enabling the self-sensing ability of the SMA. The potential of this self-sensing ability has not received sufficient exploration so far, and even the previous studies in literature lack generality. This paper concerns the utilization of the self-sensing property of a spring-biased Nickel-Titanium (Nitinol) SMA actuator for two applications: ER feedback position control of an SMA actuator without a position sensor, and estimation of the opening of a SMA actuated valve. The use of the self-sensing property eliminates the need for a position sensor, therefore reducing the cost and size of an SMA actuator assembly. Two experimental apparatuses are fabricated to facilitate the two proposed applications, respectively. Based on open-loop testing results, the curve fitting technique is used to represent the nonlinear relationships between the displacement and the electrical resistance of the two SMA wire actuators. Using the mathematical models of the two SMA actuators, respectively, a proportional plus derivative controller is designed for control of the SMA wire actuator using only electrical resistance feedback. Consequently, the opening of the SMA actuated valve can be estimated without using an extra sensor.

A study on electroreflectance in undoped n-GaAs (불순물이 첨가되지 않은 n-GaAs에서의 Electroreflectance에 관한 연구)

  • An/n-GaAs(100) Schottky barrier diode has been investigated by using electoreflectance(ER). From the observed Franz-Keldysh oscillatins(FKO), the internal electric field(Ei) of the sample is $5.76\times 10^{4}$V/cm at 300 K. As the modulation voltage($V_{ac}$) IS changed, the line shape of ER signal does not change but its amplitude various linerly. For increasing forward and reverse dc bias boltage($V_{bias}$), the amplitude of ER signal decreases. The internal electric field decreased from $19.3\times 10^4\sim4.39\times10^4$V/cm as $V_{bias}$ INCREASES FROM -5.0 V TO 0.6 V. For Au/n-GaAs the valve of built-in voltage($V_{bi}$) determined from the plot of $V_{bias}$ versus $E_i^2$ is 0.70 V. This value agrees with that observed in the plot of $V_{bias}$ versus amplitude of FKO peak. In addition, the carrier concentraion(N) and potential barrier($\Phi$) of the sample at 300 K are found to be about $2.4\times 10^{16}\textrm{cm}^{-3}$ and 0.78 eV, respectively.

Clinical Analysis of Surgical Results and Preoperative Management of Acute Aortic Dissection (급성 대동맥박리증의 수술성적 및 수술전 처치에 대한 임상적 고찰)

  • Acute aortic dissection associated with high mortality rate has an extremely poor prognosis if early diagnosis and treatment are not received. Recently, with advanced computed tomography and echocardiography, diagnostic rate is higher and early operation is possible. Therefore preoperative medical therapy at ER(emergency room) lowered the mortality rate. This study was done to analyze the results with preoperative management at ER and operations, retrospectively. Material and Method: A series of 42 patients treated surgically for acute aortic dissections from 1991 to 2001 were included in this study. There were 18 males and 24 females. Mean age was 51.1 years. The admission course through emergency and outpatient department(OPD) was 34 and 8 respectively. Result: 26 patients underwent ascending aorta replacement-7 combined aortic valve replacements, 7 patients underwent descending aorta replacements and 9 patients received Bentall's operation. At emergency department, 20 patients received antihypertensive drugs and $\beta$-receptor blockers and 6 patients died. 22 patients did not receive antihypertensive and $\beta$-receptor block drugs and 10 patients died. There were 16(38%) overall deaths. Conclusion: Early diagnosis at ER or OPD is essential for acute aortic dissection, and it is important to select the most appropriate noninvasive interventions as possible. Therefore, preoperative drug therapy at ER is suggested according the patient conditions.

Active Control of a New Cargo Handling System Adapted for Time-Varying Tide (조수간만의 차를 고려한 새로운 하역 시스템의 능동 제어)

  • This paper resents a novel cargo system adapted for a sea port subjected to severe time-varying tide. The proposed system can perform loading or unloading by using a sort of hydraulic elevator associated with real-tim position control. As a preliminary phase, a small-sized model of the cargo system is designed and constructed. The model consists of three principal components ; container palette transfer(CPT) car, platform with lifting columns and cargo ship. The platform activated by the electro-rheological(ER) valve-cylinder is actively controlled to track the position of the cargo ship subjected to be varied due to the time-varying tide and wave motion. Following the derivation of the dynamic model for the platform and cargo ship motions, an appropriate control scheme incorporating time sequence and PID(proportional-integral-derivative) controller is formulated and implemented. Both the simulated and the measured control results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed cargo system.

  • In a conventional and lean operating engine, the state of mixture is very important in the combustion and emission characteristics. Lean operation is known to decrease the formation while maintaining a good fuel economy, but the unstable operation due to misfire and erratic combustion prevents engines from being operated at very lean mixtures, so both combustion rates and exhaust emission formation need to be satisfied comparably. In this study, it is designed and experimented the modified engine, and analyzed the combustion and exhaust emission according to the change of engine speed and with adding ozone. The conclusions were drawn out and enumerated as follows. 1. At the experimental result of automobile diesel engine, it has been verified that the formation of particulate matter(PM) gas is able to be lower with the addition of optimum quantities of ozone. 2. Carbon monoxide(CO) was formed by the lack of oxygen and the thermal dissociation in the combustion process. Therefore, with the change of swirl valve's position and addition of oxygen and ozone, CO formation was decreased by the increasing of excessive O2, but it was increased by the temperature of combustion gas growing higher. As a result of the two effects, CO formation was decreased in this study. 3. Hydrocarbon(HC) was formed by the lack of O2, and the flow of mixture in cylinder. According to opening of the swirl valve and adding the oxygen and ozone, hydrocarbon gas was decreased by 20%, 9%, and 27.5%, respectively. 4. Nitric oxides($NO_x$) was strongly affected by the combustion gas temperature. As a result of respectively experimental conditions, $NO_x$ formation was increased about 20% due to (be the) high(er) combustion gas temperature.

  • Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is one of the field-responsive fluids that is of interest to many researchers due to its high yield stress value, which depends on the magnetic field strength. Similar to electrorheological (ER) fluid, the combination of working modes is one of the techniques to increase the performance of the fluids with limited focus on MR fluids. In this paper, a novel MR testing cell incorporated with valve, shear and squeeze operational modes is designed and constructed in order to investigate the behaviour of MR fluid in combined mode. The magnetic field distribution in the design concept was analyzed using finite element method in order to verify the effective areas of each mode have the acceptable range of flux density. The annular gap of valve and shear were fixed at 1 mm, while the squeeze gap between the parallel circular surfaces was varied up to 20 mm. Three different coil configurations, which were made up from 23 SWG copper wires were set up in the MR cell. The simulation results indicated that the magnetic field distributed in the squeeze gap was the highest among the other gaps with all coils were subjected to a constant applied current of 1 A. Moreover, the magnetic flux densities in all gaps were in a good range of magnitude based on the simulations that validated the proposed design concept. Hence, the 3D model of the MR testing cell was designed using Solidworks for manufacturing processes.

One Case Treated Cerebral Infarction with Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis (류마티스성 승모판 협착증을 동반한 뇌경색 환자의 치험 1예)

  • Valvular heart disease is one of the main current of cardiac problems and has many problems must be solved by sequelae and complications, etc. Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis is mainly attacked by rheumatic fever and developed by process of treatment of mitral valve or formation of trace. The purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of oriental treatment for Cerebral Infarction with Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis. At the time of visiting ER, he was shown the symptoms of dull mentality, Rt. hemiplegia, global aphasia, dysphagia, chest discomfort, insomnia, dyspnea, etc, It showed that Atrial fibrillation in EKG monitoring, Atrial fibrillation, Rheumatic Mitral Stenosis, Ejection-Fraction slope 60% in Cardiac echography, Lt. atrial hypertrophy, Rt. atrial hypertrophy, Rt. ventricular hypertrophy with pulmonary congestion in chest X-ray. From the view of oriental diagnostic criteria. We classified the patient's clinical conditions and treated accordingly. As a result of treatment, symptoms were markedly improved and he was discharged. Further elaboration of oriental diagnostic classification could possibly lead to the fundamental treatment.
