  • The structure and properties of blends of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) and polyolefin blends have been investigated. The rheology and tensile properties of the EPDM/HDPE(high density polyethylene), EPDM/PP(polypropylene) binary and EPDM/PP/HDPE ternary blends were studied along with morphological analyses. Those properties were affected by preferential interaction of EPDM on HDPE, compared to that of EPDM on PP, for the binary blends. The preferetial interaction may stem from the molecular characteristics of EPDM to possess more ethylene units than propylene units in the elastomer. The EPDM played a role as compatibilizer for HDPE and PP in the EPDM/PP/HDPE ternary blends.

  • In this paper, we have investigated the degradation of shed materials of outdoor insulators by UV-radiation by using corona-charging and XPS analysis. The accumulated charges on polymeric surface having intrinsic hydrophobic property have a negative impact on retaining its hydrophobicity. Therefore, shorter decay times of surface charges are preferred. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM show a different decay trend with UV treated time. From the XPS analysis, the oxidized groups of silica-like structure in silicone rubber increase with UV treatment time. For EPDM, the oxidized carbon groups of C=O, O=C-O increase as elapse of UV radiation time. These oxidized surface for each material have different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges may be expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results is discussed.

  • Linear viscoelastic properties of 11 types of EPDM and 1 type of EPM rubbers have been measured at $210^{\circ}C$, using a RDS(Rheometrics dynamic spectrometer). The data base, i.e., complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent and relaxation spectrum of the sample should be useful for rubber blending and compounding.

  • The blends of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) have been studied. Blends were prepared in a laboratory internal mixer, where EPDM was cured under shear with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) in the absence of HDPE and later blended with HDPE (cure-blend). The effect of DCP concentration, shear intensity of the mixing, and rubber/plastic composition were studied on the rheological, thermal and physical properties of the cure-blend. The results obtained were compared with those from blend-cure of Lee and Kim's work and discussed.

  • In this study, the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of ethylene-propylene-diene-termonomer (EPDM) based rubber compounds and various other environmentally friendly inorganic flame retardants were investigated. Alumina trihydrate (ATH) and magnesium hydroxide (MDH) were used as inorganic flame retardants. The mechanical properties after thermal oxidation aging and the flame-retardant properties of the EPDM compounds were measured using a moving die rheometer, a universal testing machine, a compression set, and a UL 94 V flammability test. We focused on how the properties were affected by the type and amount of flame retardants. The results demonstrated that the optimal mechanical and flame-retardant V-0 grade properties were obtained at an ATH content of 200 phr.

  • For solving the environmental problem of the waste EPDM and for new TPE blend materials, we developed a new kind of TPE material using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. To improve the mechanical properties of TPE material such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus of the blend, PP and waste EPDM powder were blended with different screw configurations. The mechanical properties of the blends and morphology of the TPE were investigated. As the number of kneading disc and left-handed screw element increased, dynamic vulcanization of the material was increased because the shear stress and residence time of blends increased.

  • With the recent increase in the demand for electric vehicles, it is necessary to identify the high current safety of automobile parts. Among the automobile parts, the EPDM parts required colored parts from the existing black; therefore, it was necessary to change the basic filler from carbon black to silica. The rubber used in automobile parts is flexible and exhibits basic characteristics of high strength and elongation. However, as the filler is changed to silica, its physical properties, such as tensile strength and elongation, are lower than those of the existing carbon black base. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the mechanical properties with the addition of the EPDM compound using silica as a base without degrading the physical properties of EPDM. In this study, an experiment based on the additive content was performed using the mixture experimental planning method to analyze the mechanical properties according to the additive type and mixing ratio of silica-based EPDM. The mixing ratio of the four additives was set using a simplex lattice design, and the tensile strength, elongation, modulus 300%, and permanent compression reduction rate were analyzed for mechanical characteristics, and rheometer experiments were performed for vulcanization characteristics. Through statistical analysis of the measured data, the main effects and interactions of the EPDM-blended rubber additives were analyzed. These results can be used to derive a mixing ratio of additives that satisfies the required characteristics of the EPDM compound.

  • In our country, the housing materials of polymeric outdoor insulators have mainly been used EPDM or silicone rubber. EPDM housing materials had been widely used in the field for the first time. The reason why silicone has the high cost of production. But recently, most of the manufacturers that newly developed polymeric insulators make its choice of silicone housing. EPDM showed a good resistance to tracking. We compared the various characteristics for EPDM and silicone insulators that have similar type and design. Silicone insulators have more performance in flashover voltage test and leakage current measurement because of a good water repellent than EPDM ones. Also, the property of EPDM compared with silicone insulators greatly decreased after aging test in combined acceleration ageing facilities for 1000 hours.

  • A double cantilever sandwich-beam method has been applied to the evaluation of the frequency dependence of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of EPDM rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Effects of the rubber layer length on the dynamic characteristics were also investigated: reliable values were measured when the length of the inserted rubber layer was larger than and equal to 50% of the effective specimen length. The values were compared with those obtained by the dynamic mechanical analysis and the simple resonant test. Relationships of the dynamic characteristics of rubbers with frequency could be determined using the least square error method.

  • In general, the main dielectric materials for EHV electric appliances were epoxy, EPDM and Silicone rubber. The Silicone rubber has been rosed so many among them in EHV appliances in the worldwide, especially in Europe and North America. The reason why it is very stable in the thermal, mechanical and electrical environment. Therefore it is still becoming increasingly widespread in the application of the EHV appliances as a main dielectric material. On this study, investigated about real appliances and tested on basic properties of the Silicone rubber compared to organic dielectric material that is EPDM. At the result, the Silicone rubber is more dominant as main dielectric material for EHV appliances than any other organic polymers.
