Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are the most concerned toxic organic pollutants to human. Because of their extremely high toxicity and uncertain genotoxic potential, their determination in environmental and biological samples is of great interest. Municipal solid waste incinerator facilities have been reported as the major contributors of dioxins and furans to the environment, and their formation from combustion is a universal phenomenon, everywhere. In this study dioxins and furans were analyzed from the bottom ash produced during combustion in an municipal waste incinerator located in Seoul. The EPA method was modified for sample pretreatment: the soxhlet method was used for extraction and clean-up procedures were performed by using silica and basic alumina, excluding active-carbon. The extract was then analyzed by HRGC/HRMS. A general trend of increase in the amounts of 6∼7 chlorine-substituted dioxins and furans was observed. Total dioxins, furans and 2,3,7,8-TCDD were determined as 8.05 ng/g, 4.75 ng/g, and 6.93 pg/g, respectively.

In this study, we tried to establish analysis methods of perchlorate with ion chromatography(IC) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry(LC/MS) and monitored perchlorate levels in various kinds of water and soil samples. The obtained method detection limit(MDL) of IC was 1 ppb and that of LC/MS was 0.005 ppb in water sample. We monitored the ground and spring water in Busan and the average perchlorate level in ground water was 0.031 $\pm$ 0.011 ppb and that of spring water was 0.013 $\pm$ 0.014 ppb. Wastewater samples were also examined and the levels of perchlorate ranged from 0.007 to 0.380 ppb. The perchlorate levels in all water samples investigated in this study were below the EPA guideline.
Dioxins are chemical substances that are not properly decomposed degradation under natural photochemical, biological and chemical conditions in the environment, and bio-accumulate through the food chain, so pose a risk of causing adverse effects to human health and the environment. Ninety seven percent of human exposure to dioxins comes through meat, fish, dairy consumption and so on. Pork is the largest proportion meat aspect of daily intake in the Korean food. Pigs are three times more than Cattle in terms of breeding population and production amount in the world, and the amount is increasing every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the exposure level of dioxins in pig's body. Also, it is required to evaluate the presence of these chemical substances in the pig's feed grain such as corn, soybeans, and tallow. The purpose of this study was to evaluate PCDD/Fs in pig's feed to search the origin of PCDD/Fs. Feed samples obtained were wheat from East Europe, corn from South America and America, soybean meal from Korea, America, South America and India and tallow from Korea. The preparation of samples was based on the EPA method 1613. Instrumental analysis was based on the use of high resolution gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). The concentrations of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 1,2,3,7,8-pentachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD), which are the most toxic potent dioxins, were not observed in any of the samples. However OCDD was detected in most of the samples. The TEQs in the feed samples were ranged from 0 pg TEQ/g to 0.09841 pg TEQ/g. Especially, the high level of TEQs was observed in the samples of wheat from East Europe and soybean meal from Korea.

Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) have high toxicity and bioaccurnulation potentials into human body even inbsmall amount (levels of ng/$m^3$). As the levels of HAPs might be controversial, it has been become essential to establish the analysis method for correct results. In this study, various analysis methods of VOCs and Aldehydes were compared in order to select the proper methods in our condition. Sampling and analysis method of VOCs were followed to EPA TO-14a and TO-17. VOCs were collected in absorption tube and separated by thermal desorption unit then analyzed by GC/MSD. Aldehydes were sampled in DNPH-cartridge and extracted into solution then analyzed by HPLC as the same condition of EPA TO-13a. This study also shows the results of QA/QC system of selected methods. Some experiments could be improving the data assurance blank test, calibration check, repetition precision check, the determination of detection limit and reproducibility of the retention time. Precisions of VOCs and aldehydes were ranged in 2$\sim$9% and 1$\sim$4% RSD, respectively. Recovery rate of VOCs showed variable ranges from 60 to 133.5%. MDL of VOCs and aldehydes were 0.044$\sim$0.284 ppb and 0.14$\sim$1.02 ng, respectively.
Risk assessment processes, which include processes for the estimation of human cancer potency using animal bioassay data and calculation of human exposure, entail uncertainties. In the exposure assessment process, exposure scenarios with various assumptions could affect the exposure amount and excess cancer risk. We compared risk estimates among various exposure scenarios of vinyl chloride, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene in tap water. The contaminant concentrations were analyzed from tap water samples in Seoul from 1993 to 1994. The oral and inhalation cancer potencies of the contaminants were estimated using multistage, Weibull, lognormal, and Mantel-Bryan model in TOX-RISK computer software. In the first case, human excess cancer risk was estimated by the US EPA method used to set the MCL(maximum contaminant level). In the second and third case, the risk was estimated for multi-route exposure with and without adopting Monte-Carlo simulation, respectively. In the second case, exposure input parameters and cancer potencies used probability distributions, and in the third case, those values used point estimates(mean, and maximum or 95% upper-bound value). As a result, while the excess cancer risk estimated by US EPA method considering only direct ingestion tended to be underestimated, the risk which was estimated by considering multi-route exposure without Monte-Carlo simulation and then using the maximum or 95% upper-bound value as input parameters tended to be overestimated. In risk assessment for volatile organic compounds, considering multi-route exposure with adopting Monte-Carlo analysis seems to provide the most reasonable estimations.
Because of the rapid progress of urbanization in recent decades, the proportion of impervious areas in cities has increased. As a result, hydrological properties of urban streams have changed and non-point pollution sources have increased, that have had considerable influence on human life and ecosystems. To manage these situations, application of non-point pollution reduction facilities and LID facilities are expanding recently. In this study, it is investigated if rainfall interception rate used in design of non-point pollution reduction facilities can be applied to design of LID facilities. For this purpose, EPA SWMM is constructed for part of Noksan National Industrial Complex area wherein long-term observed storm water data can be obtained and storm water interception rates for various design capacities of a bio-retention LID facility reservoirs are estimated. While sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to design specifications of bio-retention facility is not large, sensitivity of storm water interception rate according to regional rainfall characteristics is relatively large. As a result of comparing present rainfall interception rate estimation method with the one proposed in this study, the present method is highly likely to overestimate performance of the bio-retention facility. Finally, a new storm water interception rate formula for bio-retention LID facility is proposed.
Analytical method of benzophenone (BP) in sediment and soil was developed by gas chromatography/mass selective detector/selected ion monitoring (GC/MSD/SIM). The ultrasonic extraction of US EPA (method 3550B) method and liquid-liquid extraction for sediment and soil samples were used for the analysis of BP from sediment and soil. BP was extracted with n-hexane. Organic layer was washed with 5% sodium chloride solution. 1∼2 l of the concentrated solution of organic layer was applied to GC/MSD. The retention time of BP peak was 11.10 min. Recovery (%) of BP by ultrasonication from sediment and soil samples was 96.0∼100.6% and 40.0∼83.0%, respectively. Recovery of BP by liquid-liquid extraction was 51∼59% in soil samples. The detection limit of BP in sediment and soil samples were determined to 0.1 ng/g.
Lead and cadmium were analyzed with different pretreatemnt methods. Paddy soil and wastewater sludge samples were used and the result was compared each other. Pretreatment method affected the concentration obtained from samples significantly. Large difference was illustrated between the results. The concentration by 0.1N HCl extraction method, an official analytical method for soil and solid wastes, was far lower than those by the EPA3050B and mixed-acid digestion methods. The reason might be that metals associated with organics and silicates are not easily extracted by 0.1N HCl, while digestion methods using strong acids and high temperature dissolved all the elements in the samples. It implies that pretreatment method should be specified in addition to concentration on the report of metal analysis for environmental samples. Acid digestion methods are not necessarily good because the concentration obtained does not represent the natural condition which is our concern in many cases. The 0.1N HCl extraction method does not fully represent the natural condition either. The metals associated with organics will be extracted eventually as organics decompose with time. Therefore, proper pretreatment and analytical methods should be developed for specific purpose, and their standardization is recommended.

The purpose of this study was to compare the replicability of centric relation made by means of self guided method, bimanual manipulation, chin-point guidance, leaf gauge method, gothic arch tracing. The EPA test of Arcus $Digma^{(R)}$ was employed for examining the reproducibility of centric relation. 10 adults with normal occlusion were participated in this study. In this limitation of study, the following results were obtained; Condyle position was different depending on different methods of guiding centric relation. Left and right temporomandibular joints showed a little different degree of repeatability. Bimanual manipulation using anterior jig was the most replicable. Chin point guidance provided the second most repeatable method, and Gothic arch tracing showed the third, the leaf gauge was the forth, the self-guided method was the worst.
This study included the development of analytical method for determining perchlorate in water sample. The analytical condition was referred in EPA 314.0 method which use ion chromatography and the concentrator column was replaced by the guard column. Concentrating 10mL raw or treated water sample on to AGl6 guard column made it possible to get the LOD(Limit of Detection) of $0.73\;{\mu}g/L$. The total run time was 11 minutes and during run time next sample could be concentrated on AGl6 guard column. Compared to the Concentration method which needed manual operation, the Direct Injection method could screen the many water samples. The LOD of the Direct Injection method was higher and the sensitivity was lower than that of the Concentration method. The RSDs(Relative Standard Deviations) were lower than 2.5 % for peak height and 0.7 % for retention time in pre-concentration methods. This method Showed good reproducibility and reliability and it was thought the deviations of recovery value could be reduced by considering column capacity and making water sample homogeneous. Matrix Elimination could be done using the pre-concentration method if perchlorate were in complex matrix of sample.
