Effect of Ethyl Pyruvate on Paclitaxel-Induced Neuropathic Pain in Rats

  • Background: Although paclitaxel is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of solid cancers, side effects such as neuropathic pain lead to poor compliance and discontinuation of the therapy. Ethyl pyruvate (EP) is known to have analgesic effects in several pain models and may inhibit apoptosis. The present study was designed to investigate the analgesic effects of EP on mechanical allodynia and apoptosis in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells after paclitaxel administration. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: 1) a control group, which received only vehicle; 2) a paclitaxel group, which received paclitaxel; and 3) an EP group, which received EP after paclitaxel administration. Mechanical allodynia was tested before and at 7 and 14 days after final paclitaxel administration. Fourteen days after paclitaxel treatment, DRG apoptosis was determined by activated caspase-3 immunoreactivity (IR). Results: Post-treatment with EP did not significantly affect paclitaxel-induced allodynia, although it tended to slightly reduce sensitivities to mechanical stimuli after paclitaxel administration. After paclitaxel administration, an increase in caspase-3 IR in DRG cells was observed, which was co-localized with NF200-positive myelinated neurons. Post-treatment with EP decreased the paclitaxel-induced caspase-3 IR. Paclitaxel administration or post-treatment with EP did not alter the glial fibrillary acidic protein IRs in DRG cells. Conclusions: Inhibition of apoptosis in DRG neurons by EP may not be critical in paclitaxel-induced mechanical allodynia.

육성기 넙치 배합사료의 성장 및 수질 평가 (Effects of a Commercial Extruded Pellet on Growth Performance and Water Quality in Growing Olive Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of commercial extruded pellet (EP) diet on the growth and water quality compared with a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for flounder on field feeding experiments. Three replicate groups of 130 fish per each tank (initial weight of 380 g) were fed one of the EP and Moist pellet (MP) for 7 months. In field feeding experiment, no significant difference was observed in final mean weight of fish fed the experimental EP (1,233 g) and MP (1,237 g), and any noticeable problem caused by feeding the experimental EP was not found during the whole period of feeding trial. Feed efficiency of fish fed the experimental EP was higher than that of MP, and there was no significant difference in survival between the fish fed experimental EP and MP. The concentrations of SS, COD, TN and TP of seawater in tanks of MP groups were 1-5 times higher than those of EP groups. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that diet EP could be developed to replace MP diet for the marketable size of production for flounder without adverse effects on growth performance and water quality.

Effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. Seed Extracts and Forsythia viridissima Lindl. Extracts on Antioxidative System and Lipid Peroxidation in Erythrocytes of Rats Fed High-Cholesterol Diet

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidative effects of Paeonia lactiftora Pall. (PL) seed extracts and Forsythia viridissima Lindl. (FVL) extracts on the antioxidative defense system and lipid peroxidation in the erythrocytes of rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100 10 g were randomly assigned to nine experimental groups and fed 0.5 % cholesterol. The HC group did not receive any supplement, while the MP group was supplemented with 0.1 % methanol extract of PL seed, the MP2 group with 0.2 % methanol extract of PL seed, the EP1 group with 0.05 % ether-soluble fraction of PL seed, the EP2 group with 0.1 % ether-soluble fraction of PL seed, the MS1 group with 0.05 % methanol extract of FVL, the MS2 group with 0.1 % methanol extract of FVL, the ES group with 0.025% ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of FVL, and the ES2 group with 0.05 % ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of FVL. The experimental diets were fed ad libitum for 3 weeks. The erythrocyte SOD activity in the EP1 and EP2 groups increased 38% and 59%, respectively, when compared with the HC group, while the erythrocyte GSHpx activity in the EP1, EP2, and ES2 groups increased 30%, 31 %, and 29%, respectively, when compared with the HC group. The level of erythrocyte TBARS was significantly lower in the MP2, EP1, and EP2 groups than in the HC group, yet the level of serum TBARS was significantly lower in the all supplemented groups than in the HC group. The level of serum HDL- TBARS was significantly lower in the EP1 and EP2 groups than in the HC group, while the level of serum LDL- TBARS was significantly lower in the all the supplemented groups than in the HC group. Accordingly, the results indicated that the PL seed extracts and FVL extracts reduced oxidative damage by activating the antioxidative defense system in the erythrocytes of rats fed a high-cholesterol diet.

Etoposide-Cisplatin Alternating with Vinorelbine-Cisplatin Versus Etoposide-Cisplatin Alone in Patients with Extensive Disease Combined with Small Cell Lung Cancer

  • Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of alternating etoposide-cisplatin and vinorelbine-cisplatin (EP-NP) compared with an etoposide-cisplatin (EP) regimen for advanced combined small cell carcinomas. Materials and Methods: Histologically confirmed combined small cell carcinoma patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned (1:1) into either the EP-NP setting (group A) or the EP setting (group B). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival in patients who received at least one dose of treatment. Results: Eighty-two patients entered into this trial, 42 in group A and 40 in group B. The objective response rates in group A and group B were 42.9% and 32.5%, respectively (p=0.334). Survival analysis showed that median progression-free survival was 6.1 months in group A, which was significantly longer than the 4.1 months in group B (p=0.041). However, as to overall survival, no significant difference was found between the two groups (11.0 vs 10.1 months in groups A and B, respectively, p=0.545). No unexpected side effects were observed in either group. Conclusions: The EP-NP regimen for combined small cell carcinomas prolonged progressio-nfree survival compared with the EP regimen. Further clinical investigations are warranted.

4관능성 에폭시/생분해성 MAP 블렌드의 경화 거동 및 유변학적 특성에 관한 연구 (Studies on Cure Behavior and Rheological Properties of Tetrafunctional Epoxy/Biodegradable MAP Blends)

  • 본 실험에서는 4관능성 에폭시 수지 (4EP)와 생분해성 modified aliphatic polyester (MAP) 블렌드의 경화 거동, 열안전성, 유변학적 특성, 그리고 기계적 특성을 살펴보았다. DSC 측정 결과, 경화 활성화 에너지 ( $E_{a}$ )는 4EP에 대한 MAP의 비율이 10 wt%로 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 이는 4EP와 MAP 사이의 분자상호작용이 증가하였기 때문으로 사료된다. 열안정성과 관련있는 분해 활성화 에너지 ( $E_{t}$ )는 Coats-Redfern 방법을 이용하여 구하였으며 MAP의 함량비가 10에서 30 wt% 내에서 증가하였다. 이는 블렌드 시스템에서의 가교 밀도의 증가 때문으로 사료된다. 유변학적 특성은 레오미터를 이용하여 등온 조건하에서 검토하였고, 겔화 시간과 경화 온도를 이용한 Arrhenius 방정식을 적용하여 가교 활성화 에너지 ( $E_{c}$ )를 검토한 결과, $E_{a}$ 와 유사한 경향을 나타내었다. 기계적 계면특성인 파괴인성 ( $K_{IC}$ )은 시편의 semi-IPN구조 거동으로 고찰하였다.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate extruded pellet (EP) diet compared with a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus on field feeding experiments in Jeju area. The experimental EP diet (juvenile, growing and adult) was prepared based on the former studies on nutrient requirements and feed ingredient of flounder. Fish were distributed randomly to each aquarium as a group of 102,300 fish (initial mean weight 97 g) in field experiment I and reared randomly to each aquarium as a group of 40,000 fish (initial mean weight 120 g) in field experiment II. In field feeding experiment I conducted in commercial flounder farm, survival, wt. gain (94-1,090 g), feed efficiency and condition factor of fish fed experimental EP were comparable to those of fish fed MP, but considerably higher protein efficiency ratio were observed in fish fed experimental EP. In field feeding experiment II, no significant difference was observed in final mean weight of fish fed the experimental EP (1,234 g) and MP (1,286 g), and any noticeable problem caused by feeding the experimental EP was not found during the whole period of feeding trial. Survival of fish fed the experimental EP was lower than that of MP, and there was no significant difference in feed efficiency between the fish fed experimental EP and MP. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that diet EP could be developed to replace MP diet for the marketable size (1.3 kg) of production for flounder without adverse effects on growth performance. In particular, abdominal dropsy and reduction of condition factor, which are frequently occurred in commercial EP feeding farms, were not observed in flounder fed experimental EP.

2H-$PbI_2$ 단결정의 엑시톤 반사 및 $A_{EP}$선에 관한 연구 (Exciton reflection and $A_{EP}$ line of 2H-$PbI_2$ single crystal)

  • 2H-Pb $I_{2}$ 단결정의 반사스펙트럼을 10K에서 측정하였으며 기초흡수단 근처에서 n=1, 2, 3의 Wannier 엑시톤 계열과 $A_{EP}$ 선을 얻었다. $A_{EP}$ 선은 Nagamune 등의 보고와는 달리 라만스펙트럼의 2nd 포논에너지로부터 n=2 엑시톤과 2nd 포논의 결합상태로 생각된다. 또 2nd 포논은 이차 라만산란과정에서 LO 포논과 관련된 라만선으로 생각된다. Wannier 엑시톤 계열로부터 기상법으로 성장시킨 2H-Pb $I_{2}$ 단결정의 엑시톤 결합에너지와 반경은 각각 33meV와 14.angs.이었으며 n=1 엑시톤의 L-T 분리 에너지 값은 10K 에서 6.56meV로 동일 온도에서 측정된 발광스펙트럼에서도 같은 값으로 나타났다. 또 반사스펙트럼을 온도의 함수로 측정하였으며 그 결과 n=1 엑시톤의 반사선은 온도가 증가함에 따라 장파장 쪽으로 이동하였고 L-T 분리에너지가 증가하면서 엑시톤 반사선의 예리도도 감소함을 알 수 있었다.

알루미늄 거푸집 표면코팅재가 콘크리트 표면품질에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Surface Coating Material for Aluminum Form on Surface Quality of the Concrete)

  • 본 연구는 알루미늄 거푸집 표면코팅재가 콘크리트 표면품질에 미치는 영향에 대하여 분석한 것이다. 콘크리트 표면형상에 미치는 알루미늄 거푸집 표면코팅재 변화의 영향에 따른 콘크리트 표면의 육안관찰시 전반적으로 전용횟수가 증가함에 따라 표면품질은 저하하는 것으로 나타났고, 치장합판(Plywood이하: PW)이 우수한 표면품질을 나타내었다. 에폭시(Epoxy :이하 EP) 수지의 경우는 박리제를 도포하였을 시 표면품질이 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 박리제 도포여부 및 전용횟수에 따른 콘크리트의 표면조도는 전용횟수가 증가함에 따라 가장 높은 표면조도 값을 나타내어 평활성이 불량한 것으로 나타났지만, EP와 PW의 표면조도 값은 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 다만 EP의 경우는 박리제를 도포할 경우 표면조도 값이 낮게 나타났다. 박리제 도포여부 및 전용횟수에 따른 콘크리트의 공극갯수는 전반적으로 박리제를 도포할시 저감하는 것으로 나타났다.

ARX 모델과 적응 필터를 이용한 단일 유발 전위의 추정 (Estimation of Single Evoked Potential Using ARX Model and Adaptive Filter)

  • A new estimationn mothod of single-EP(evoked potential) using adaptive algorithm and paralnetrlc model is proposed. Since the EEG(eletroencephalogram) signal is stationary in short time interval the AR(autoregressive) parameters of the EEG are estimated by the Burg algorithm using the EEG of prestimulus interval. After stimulus, the single-EP is estimated by adaptive algorithm. The validity of this method is verified by the simulation for generated auditory single-EP based on parametric model.
