  • Underground construction requires long construction duration and a variety of equipment, and environmental management and improvement of its activities are considered necessary. For the purpose of the environmental improvement of underground construction activities, the appropriate development of technologies to reduce generated pollutants is mandatory. However, the analysis of the needs of technology development and the evaluation of development priorities should take precedence. In this research, the needs for the improvement of each construction activity are analyzed as a preliminary study for a proposed technology development plan to improve the environmental performance of underground construction. Firstly, environmental problem factors caused by underground construction activities are determined while underground construction types, methods, and activities are classified. A questionnaire survey to determine the needs for the improvement of each activity is then carried out. The survey indicated that the most urgent activity to be improved is that of cutting excavation, which causes environmental problems associated with flying dust. This study could be used as a basis for a technology development plan for the environmental improvement of underground construction activities. The result of this study, the priority of improvement needs, contributes to the effective allocation of a limited Research and Development (R&D) budget.

  • As the seriousness of the climate crisis is emphasized, movements to solve it are becoming active. In Korea, efforts to reduce environmental impacts across all industries are being strengthened through the Framework Act on Low Carbon Green Growth. The construction industry predicts the environmental impact of buildings during the entire life cycle, but in the construction process, there is a difference in energy usage depending on the amount of input, and it is difficult to predict the environmental impact if data cannot be collected. Therefore, this study evaluated the environmental impact of energy usage in the apartment construction process as part of the study on predicting and reducing the environmental impact of the construction process of the construction site. To this end, the environmental effects of buildings were set as global warming, resource consumption, and ozone layer effects, and the environmental effects of the actual energy use in the case were evaluated. In addition, based on the evaluation results, the characteristics of the input energy usage were compared and analyzed.

  • Recent industrial development and technological breakthroughs have made our life much more convenient, however, at the cost of environmental degradation resulting from indiscreet focus on development in combination of disregard of impact on eco system. Notably, global warming is one of the most serious environmental issues, triggering attention for environmental protection in Korea and elsewhere. To address such issues, nations around the world are beefing up environmental regulatory framework such as UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) to tackle environmental challenges from global perspective. Against the backdrop, Korea has been engaging actively in global initiatives to reduce climate change, ratifying UNFCCC in 1993 and the Kyoto Protocol in October, 2002. However, unlike the government responding to environmental degradation in earnest, construction industry is far from making efforts to reduce wastes. Construction waste is a source of environmental deterioration world wide and adds to the aggregate cost that construction companies should assume. Korean construction firms also need to develop initiative aggressively to respond to changes in environmental policies and reduce construction costs. Therefore, this study aims at examining sources of wastes in construction sites and suggest solution in order to prod local construction companies to develop countermeasures.

  • Green building certifications and environmental assessments are extensively implemented and studied to decrease the environmental impact during the life cycle of buildings. However, most of them are not appropriate to assess the environmental performance during the construction phase due to the difference of environmental factors. To develop an environmental index of construction projects, normalization should be conducted to compare the relative impact of each factor. As a first step, this study deduced normalization references of 4 environmental factors : noise, waste, greenhouse gas, and dust.

  • In addressing the goal for sustainability in the construction industry, the very materials used for construction and the methods utilized to implement said materials must be analyzed. Specifically, some traditional residential construction materials consist of wood, steel, and concrete. Because these materials vary in their levels of sustainability, there is a need to develop and explore new or other materials that can be used for residential construction. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide a review of interlocking earthen masonry units (IEMU) as an alternative option for residential building construction. This is in an effort to explore the variables impacting their existing and potential applications as sustainable materials and a method for residential building construction. IEMU's are then examined under the triple bottom line (TBL) sustainability framework which includes analyzing the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of IEMU's. The findings of this review may lead to further progression in the development of a framework for evaluating U.S. stakeholder adoption of IEMU's and potential implementation in U.S. residential construction.

  • Background: The objective of this study is to investigate the differences in incidence rates of targeted diseases by classification of occupations among construction workers in Korea. Methods: In a subject-based cohort of the Korean Construction Worker's Cohort, we surveyed a total of 1,027 construction workers. As occupational exposure, the classification of occupations was developed using two axes: construction business and job type. To analyze disease incidence, we linked survey data with National Health Insurance Service data. Eleven target disease categories with high prevalence or estimated work-relatedness among construction workers were evaluated in our study. The average incidence rates were calculated as cases per 1,000 person-years (PY). Results: Injury, poisoning, and certain other consequences of external causes had the highest incidence rate of 344.08 per 1,000 PY, followed by disease of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue for 208.64 and diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue for 197.87 in our cohort. We especially found that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was more common in construction painters, civil engineering welders, and civil engineering frame mold carpenters, asthma in construction painters, landscape, and construction water proofers, interstitial lung diseases in construction water proofers. Conclusions: This is the first study to systematically classify complex construction occupations in order to analyze occupational diseases in Korean construction workers. There were differences in disease incidences among construction workers based on the classification of occupations. It is necessary to develop customized occupational safety and health policies for high-risk occupations for each disease in the construction industry.

  • According to the recent development of USN technology, it has been applied in various fields of construction management. In particular, the concrete curing management using the wireless measurement system is actively being conducted. However, the existing method has limitations such as the reinstallation of temperature sensors and repositioning of repeaters. It is also not easy to acquire the measured data. Thus, this study focuses on the concrete curing management. This study proposes data acquisition method using the smartphone on construction site and tests applicability of the data measuring device and the smartphone. The test allows us to suggest the actual communication distance on construction site and to determine the correction value that is applied to the measured temperature. The data acquisition method proposed in this study is intended to enable appropriate management on construction site and will be able to be applied effectively to a variable construction site. It can also be used in all fields of construction management.

  • This study investigated the predicted and abserved outflow of groundwater which occurred during tunnel constructions. Among the 586 road construction projects from 1986 to 2006, 4 route 25 tunnel construction areas and 26 waste water treatment facilities under construction were studied. Most of the tunnel outflow prediction in EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) process have been classified into the 17 types of units depending on the assessor's options, which have not conformed to the request of the residents and non government organizations. The investigation results showed that the outflow of underground water in tunnel construction areas averaged about $0.133m^3/km{\cdot}min$ with the maximum $0.386m^3/km{\cdot}min$, and that the outflow mostly occurred in the early stage of tunnel excavation and diminished gradually. The prediction of outflow of underground water in the EIA process showed excessive results compared to observed outflow, the even 51.7 times. Consequently for more realistic prediction, current EIA method for prediction of outflow of underground water in tunnel construction areas has to adopt numerical methods coupled with hydraulics and geologic informations from unit methods of present time.
