  • This study analyze the change of wind pattern and intensity according to the transform of surface conditions, such as land use and height of terrain, over the leeward region. In order to do this, we have employed 'Envi-met' microscale atmospheric numerical model. When the same wind condition is considered, the wind speed of base case having natural surface condition of Chunsudae shows the weakest strength among different cases such as the 'bare case' and the '20 m case' which the plants is removed and the height of terrain is flatted as 20 m above the sea level over the Chunsudae, respectively. The weakening of wind speed is a maximum of $4{\sim}8 m/s$ when the inflow wind speed is 55 m/s.

  • Urbanization has caused population influx into cities, creating housing problems, and housing developmental plans have often resulted in high-rise and high-density housing complexes. Such development have seldom incorporated the environmental factors associated with the complexes and the surroundings, just being busy in increasing the volume of the housing supplies, and as a result, various environmental problems, such as disruption of the air flow, reduction of sunlight exposure amount, and temperature rise, have occurred, deteriorating the living environments. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper are to find out the causes of the problems in the contemporary complex development plans from the urban environmental viewpoint through the investigative analysis of microclimate environment in those complexes, and, further, to present a residential complex planning technique and developmental direction so as to remedy the problems described above. Then a 3-D microclimate model 'Envi-Met' was employed to analyze and predict on the related issues, per the selected planning factors.

  • Buildings in the city acts as a cause of distorted wind direction, wind speed, causing the stagnation of the air flow. In the recent trend of climate change can not but consider the temperature rise of the urbanization. This study was aimed to analyze the thermal comfort of planetary boundary layer in different artificial constructions areas which has a direct impact on urban climate, and estimating the warming phenomena. Envi-met model was used to consider the urban structure associated with urban growth in order to precisely determine the impact of the building on the city weather condition. The analyzed values of thermal comfort index were temperature, wind speed, horizontal and vertical turbulent diffusivity. In particular, analysis of the PPD(Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) represents the human thermal comfort. In this study, by adjusting the arrangement and proportion of the top floor building in the urban it was found that the inflow of the fresh air and cooling can be derived low PPD. Vertical heat flux amount of the city caused by climate change was a factor to form a high potential temperature in the city and the accumulation of cold air does not appear near the surface. Based on this, to make the city effectively respond to climate change may require a long-term restructuring of urban spatial structure and density management.

  • Since the late 20th century, the urbanization in Korea has been rapidly increasing, especially in major cities like Seoul, as a result of industrialization. One of the aspects of urbanization is coating the surfaces with impervious concrete or asphalt that water cannot penetrate. In addition, various urban, such as urban heat islands, which also have a great impact on the urban environment, occur within the cities. Therefore, the urban environment is gradually becoming hot and dry, and the need for more urban parks to compensate for these negative impacts is growing. Thus, several numerical studies have been conducted to assess these problems using coupled Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In this study, an experiment was conducted to determine the accuracy of the area of the input field using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and applying the more accurate input field to a numerical simulation using ENVI-met, in order to investigate the effect of urban parks on the thermal comfort. The results showed that an input field with a larger area is more accurate than that with a smaller area, because the surrounding terrain and cities are considered in details in the experiment with the larger area. Subsequently, the more accurate input field was used in ENVI-met, and the results of this simulation showed that the presence of the urban park increased the thermal comfort and improved the humidity conditions.

  • For investigating restriction in the use of computer modeling results without adjusting them with measured data, this study analyzed and compared microclimatic aspects and human thermal sensation between in situ measurement and computer modeling using ENVI-met in and around a small urban park of downtown Changwon in May, 2012. In the results, ENVI-met underestimated air temperatures and wind speeds than the measured ones and overestimated relative humidities. In the radiation analysis, ENVI-met overestimated solar radiation from the sky hemisphere and terrestrial radiation from the ground hemisphere and underestimated terrestrial radiation from the sky hemisphere. Also, the differences of mean radiant temperatures with the measured ones reached up to 19.6℃ which could create an 1.2 PMV difference. ENVI-met overestimated up to 2.3 PMV and 4℃ UTCI at 12:00. The difference was shown clearly in PMV than in UTCI. Therefore, when computer modeling is used in urban microclimate and human thermal sensation (comfort) studies the modeling results should be compared with measured data and adjusted adequately to adopt the results to urban and landscape planning and design.

  • This study deals with the nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ control problem of linear system using nonlinear weight. Generally the solvable condition of nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ control problem is given by the Hamilton Jacobi equality or inequality, but it is very difficult to solve. In this study, some constraints of nonlinear weight reduce the solvable condition to linear Riccati equation. Some examples of the control system design using nonlinear weight are shown.n.

  • Erosion in a watershed is one of the main sources of sediment inflow in dams. While sediment management practices can be performed to reduce and manage sedimentation in reservoirs, managing the sediment inflow before it reaches the reservoir should also be consider. The accurate location of areas with high erosion and deposition rates should be determined in order to propose an appropriate sediment management procedure such as the construction of check dams. In this study, the projected rainfall from HadGEMRA-3 for RCP 8.5, was used in C-SEM, a distributed rainfall-erosion model, to determine the projected spatial erosion patterns in Cheoncheon catchment, which is located in the upstream part of Yongdam Dam.

  • The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) has been widely used to simulate the long-term hydrological conditions of a catchment. Two output variables, outflow and sediment yield have been widely investigated in the field of water resources management, especially in determining the conditions of ungauged subbasins. The presence of missing data in weather input data can cause poor representation of the climate conditions in a catchment especially for large or mountainous catchments. Therefore, in this study, a custom module was developed and evaluated to determine the efficiency of utilizing basic spatial interpolation methods in the estimation of weather input data. The module has been written in Python language and can be considered as a pre-processing module prior to using the SWAT model. The results of this study suggests that the utilization of the proposed pre-processing module can improve the simulation results for both outflow and sediment yield in a catchment, even in the presence of missing data.
