Public concerns associated with the electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures from mobile phones on human body are increased. Although studies on the effects of the EMF exposures on human have been carried out for a long time, it is not proved yet whether the EMF effect is harmful or not. Based on the scientific results by experts, EMF exposure limits have been regulated as a precautionary approach on the assumption that the EMF effect may be harmful. It is well known that absorbed EMF can be transformed into heat within biological tissues and that thermal effects are related with the specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution. However, the relative magnitude and distribution of the energies are not well defined. Although there is comprehensive information of the thermal effects, most of them come from animal and in vitro studies. Considerable efforts have been made to analyze the EMF absorption model while the actual temperature in the human body has been rarely measured. Temperature changes on the face of a healthy male volunteer were studied. A digital mobile phone of 1.8GHz was used. A digital infrared imaging system (IRIS-5000, Medicore, Seoul, Korea) was applied to take infrared pictures of the face every minute while the volunteer talked over the mobile phone for 20 minutes. The specification of the imaging system was as follows: Temperature resolution = 0.1$^{\circ}C$; Range of temperature measurement = 17~40$^{\circ}C$; Pixel size = 0.9mm ${\times}$ 0.9mm; Frame time = 2.6s; Active temperature of detector = 77$^{\circ}$K. The result showed that temperature of the ear region was increased during the phone call and the region of the temperature increase on the face was expanded as the phone call time increased. Further study is necessary to investigate the temperature rise analytically and quantitatively.
This study was executed for the purpose of investigation of the EMFs exposures of personal and electronic environment. This study examines ELF-EMFs of electric appliances, subways and occupational and non-occupational human exposures, using EMDEX II (for 40 - 800Hz, Enertech Consultant, Inc.), from October 1995 to March 1996. Among the electric appliances examined, a massage unit showed the highest mean value of 247.07 $\mu$T, followed by an electric blanket of 5.24 $\mu$T. Indoor levels of EMF in subways exceerlcd 0.2 $\mu$T of the Swedish Guideline. The mean personal exposure levels of occupational group were 0.18 $\mu$T, while the personal EMF level of non-occupational group were 0.07 $\mu$T. Occupational group were exposed more highly while at work. However, the EMF levels during nonwork and sleep exposures between occuptional group and nonoccupational group were about the same. Estimates of time-intergrated exposure indicated that utility-specipic job classifications received about one-half or more of their total exposure on the job. Finally, this study would provide significant data for future research for exposure to magnetic fields, and more detailed study and research are necessary.

This paper describes an effort to develope a microcomputer-based parameter measurement system for a brushless DC motor. Back EMF equation is derived from back EMF waveform of a brushless DC motor. To minimize error the due to the ripple component in the measured armature current, digital averaging filter is employed. The whole identification process of signal generation, measurement parameter determination is fully automated. A new identification algorithm for the brushless DC motor parameters is developed. New parameter correction method is proposed using the deadzone current and the time to reach the peak current. In the proposed correction method, the measured current is in excellent agreement with the estimated current.
Early this year the construction of new high voltage power lines have been forced to stop due to the demonstration of residents in Kwa-chun. According to mutual agreement between the residents and Korea Electric Power Corporation, electromagnetic field(EMF) from present power lines was measured and EMF after completion of new power lines was estimated. The results show that EMF near power lines Is relatively low, and EMFnear electric substation is quite high due to the short distance between the power lines and ground. For 4 conduction 345kV line, magnetic field decreases to 3mG at the distance of 50m from the power line.

An electromagnetic flowmeter(EMF) essentially averages the velocity distribution over the pipe cross- sectional area, and the measured value is dependent on the velocity profiles. In this study, installation effects of 90$^{\circ}$long elbow(KS B 1522, ISO 3419) on the EMF characteristics was investigated. A commercial EMF was adopted and the distribution of magnetic field in the electrodes cross section was measured. In the experiment, the national flow standard system, of which measurement uncertainty was evaluated in accordance with ISO 17025 recommendation, was used fur characterization of EMF. The leading line has 150D long straight pipe to established a fully developed flow before entering into the elbow and the elbow was installed downstream of it. then the flowmeter was tested within 50 D from the elbow. The installation effects of the flowmeter were investigated by varying the mean velocity(Reynolds No.)in pipe section, the locations and the direction of electrodes plane.($\phi$) From the experimental results, we find the optimal conditions to get most accurate measurements. Generally, the deviations from the calibration value were less than 0.5 % in farther than 10D distance from the elbow and the direction of electrode plane. $\phi$ = 90$^{\circ}$yielded the smallest measurement deviation. These characteristics were shown consistently in turbulent region regardless of the mean Reynolds number.

In order to scrutinize the fluid conductivity effects on the electromagnetic flowmeter(EMF) characteristics, a small scale EMF was designed and fabricated. The measuring tube has a $3mm{\times}4mm$ rectangular cross-section, 9 mm length, and a $2mm{\times}3mm$ plate electrode and a ${\Phi}1.5mm$ point electrode. The design parameters, such as the magnetizing frequency and the number of coil turns, and the diameter were optimized. The EMF was tested with a gravimetric calibrator and showed good linearity in the range of 0 to $1.17{\times}10^{-5}m^3/s$. The fluid conductivity was varied between 3 and $11{\mu}S/cm$, and the magnitude of the flow signal was proportional to the fluid conductivity and the wetted area of the electrode. The design information and the test results provide flow measurement techniques for very low flowrate.

The control of dissolved aluminum concentration in the hot dip zinc galvanizing bath is greatly important in producing galvannealed steel sheets. The purpose of present study is to provide basic data for measurement of the aluminum concentration in site in hot dip zinc bath at the temperature of $460^{\circ}C\~500^{\circ}C$ using $CaF_2$ solid electrolyte sensor with three kinds of reference electrode. Good workability and stability of the sensor were confirmed with the $Bi+BiF_3$ reference electrode from the emf measurement. In order to measure the aluminum concentration in Zn-Al bath, the galvanic cell of fluorine ion was constructed with $CaF_2$ solid electrolyte as follows; $$(-)W|Zn-Al,\;AlF_3|CaF_2|Bi,BiF_3|W(+)$$. The emf measurement was made at the temperature of $460\pm10^{\circ}C$ in the Zn-Al bath. The following correlationship between aluminum concentration and emf was obtained by the least square regression analysis; $$E/mV=56.795log[\%Al]+1881.7\;R=0.9704$$,$$0.026wt\%{\leq}[\%Al]{\leq}0.984wt\%$$

Complex permittivities of reference liquids were measured by a liquid holder of slotted coaxial line with a movable probe at mobile communication frequencies. The validity of the liquid measurement system was checked by experimental tests with the reference liquids proposed in IEEE Std. 1528-200X or IEC 106/61/CDV.
The effective resolution of the direct current potential drop (DCPD) method for crack length determination is strongly affected by a number of factors including wire locations and calibration method. In the present study, the effects of wire locations, thermal EMF and reference probe locations on the accuracy of calibration methods, including Hicks-Pickard equation and Johnson's equation, were examined with the CT specimens which were nine times larger than the standard specimen. In light of experimental results, it was found that Hicks-Pickard equation can accurately represent the a/W-V/Vo relationship when current input wire is located at the load line. It was also found that the accuracy of DCPD method can be greatly improved with the thermal EMF calibration and the use of Vo value at a/W = 0.241. The use of reference potential was found to be impractical when current input wire is located at the load line.
Wire codes, introduced by Wertheimer and Leeper, are interesting largely because several case-control studies have reported associations between them and certain types of cancers, including childhood leukemia. This paper is concerned with the reliability of wire codes as a surrogate for residential electric and magnetic field, divided into four categories based on the electrical wiring within 40m of homes. To examine the correlation between spot measurements and wire codes, EMF was measured by using HI-3604 and classified by wire codes. The correlation between long-transformed RMS of magnetic field and wire codes was 0.81. But the correlation between log-transformed RMS of electric field and wire codes was 0.27. The results led us to determine a four category from of the Wertheimer and Leeper code that 1) may be useful in domestic epidemiological studies and 2) is not suitable for electric field exposure. Thus, the critical point of exposure assessment in residential magnetic field is to classify a wire code precisely.
