  • A novel fully-printed microstrip antenna with negative first resonance and dual polarization is proposed. The radiator is printed on the 1-layer substrate instead of multilayers. The -1st resonance results from a composite right- and left-handed(CRLH) structure that has a circumferentially interlocked gap capacitively coupling a patch with a shorted-ring. This compact antenna is provided with a dual-polarization capability by creating two orthogonal linear polarizations in one body with coaxial feeds. The design is carried out by doing full-wave EM field simulation which is compared with the measurement of the fabricated antenna prototype. The measured results give the gain of 5 dBi and the efficiency of 78% at the -1st resonance mode as the center frequency of a downlink channel of the bandwidth over 20 MHz with 29 dB polarization isolation for mobile communication.

  • In this paper, we propose the methodology to make the bandpass filters for the Smart Grid IED(Intelligent Electronic Device) smaller than the conventional bandpass filters. The size-reduction of the filters and the filter performances are indebted to devising small CRLH(composite right- and left-handed) resonators and coupling them as the metamaterial structures. The design methodology is validated by the equivalent circuit to be compared with the reliable full-wave EM simulation, and the proposed metamaterial filter outperforms the standard parallel-edge coupled filter with respect to the miniaturization and frequency response.

  • In stator windings of a 6.6kV rotating machine, internal discharge, corona discharge, and surface discharge are mainly caused by internal voids and insulation degradation. In the case of the discharge spark and electromagnetic pulse generated from a discharge source, we can detect it using various RF resonators like an EM sensor. In order to detect these types of electromagnetic sources, we designed and fabricated a planar patch sensor using a CST-MWS simulation, and PD signals from artificial defected stator windings were also measured by the sensor proposed in this study. Furthermore, In the results of the experiment, it showed similar performance to the HFCT sensor.

  • The eleventh-order coupled line lowpass filter(LPF) was designed to suppress harmonics and spurious signals. The microstrip type LPF was fabricated using a high-$T_{c}$ superconductor(HTS) $YBa_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{7-x}$(YBCO) thin film with the $CeO_{2}$ buffer layer which was deposited on the sapphire ($Al_{2}O_{3}$) substrate of 30 x 30 $mm^{2}$. The coupled-line type LPF was designed for 1.2 GHz of cutoff frequency with 0.01 dB of ripple level at passband. The fabricated HTS LPF shows excellent attenuation characteristics in stopband of 1.2~9.5GHz (7-attenuation poles in the stopband), and shows low insertion loss (0.2 dB) and return loss (17.1 dB) in the pass- band. These measured results match well with those obtained by the EM simulation. This clearly demonstrates that the HTS LPF can suppress harmonics and spurious signals effectively.

  • From the dispersion relation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave propagating through plasmas, w$\^$2/ = w$\sub$p/$\^$2/+c$\^$2/k$\^$2/ the phase velocity (w/k) of the wave is large at high density where w$\sub$p/ is large, and small at low density Therefore, when a laser pulse is located on a downward density gradient of a plasma wave, the phase velocity of the back of the pulse becomes faster than that of the front of the pulse and the pulse wavelength decreases. • Reject inference in credit scoring is a statistical approach to adjust for nonrandom sample bias due to rejected applicants. Function estimation approaches are based on the assumption that rejected applicants are not necessary to be included in the estimation, when the missing data mechanism is missing at random. On the other hand, the density estimation approach by using mixture models indicates that reject inference should include rejected applicants in the model. When mixture models are chosen for reject inference, it is often assumed that data follow a normal distribution. If data include missing values, an application of the normal mixture model to fully observed cases may cause another sample bias due to missing values. We extend reject inference by a multivariate normal mixture model to handle incomplete characteristic variables. A simulation study shows that inclusion of incomplete characteristic variables outperforms the function estimation approaches.

  • This paper describes the optimization of PGS(Patterned Ground Shield) of 5.5 turns rectangular spiral inductor using Taguchi's method. PGS is decrease method of parasite component by silicon substrate among dielectric loss reduction method. By using the taguchi's method, each parameter is fixed upon that PGS high poison(A), slot spacing(B), strip width(C) and overlap turn number(D) of PGS design parameter. Then we verified that percentage contribution and design sensitivity analysis of each parameter and level by signal to noise ratio of larger-the-better type. We consider percentage contribution and design sensitivity of each parameter and level, and then verify that model of optimization for PGS is lower inductance decreasing ratio and higher Q-factor increasing ratio by EM simulation.

  • In this article, new microstrip slow-wave bandpass filters using open loop resonator loaded with inter-digital capacitive fingers is proposed. The filter features not only compact in size, but also exhibits spurious stop-band rejection. Filters of this type with elliptic function and Chebyshev response are demonstrated. There is good agreement between experimental and full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation results.

  • The traditional mixture of experts (ME) modeled the gate network using a certain parametric function. However, if the assumed parametric function does not properly reflect the true nature, the prediction strength of ME would become weak. For example, the parametric ME often uses logistic or multinomial logistic models for the network model. However, this could be very misleading if the true nature of the data is quite different from those models. Although, in this case, we may develop more flexible parametric models by extending the model at hand, we will never be free from such misspecification problems. In order to alleviate such weakness of the parametric ME, we propose to use the semi-parametric mixture of experts (SME) in which the gate network is estimated in a non-parametrical way. Based on this, we compared the performance of the SME with those of ME and neural networks via several simulation experiments and real data examples.

  • We develop semiparametric methods for matched case-control studies using regression splines. Three methods are developed: an approximate crossvalidation scheme to estimate the smoothing parameter inherent in regression splines, as well as Monte Carlo Expectation Maximization (MCEM) and Bayesian methods to fit the regression spline model. We compare the approximate cross-validation approach, MCEM and Bayesian approaches using simulation, showing that they appear approximately equally efficient, with the approximate cross-validation method being computationally the most convenient. An example from equine epidemiology that motivated the work is used to demonstrate our approaches.
