  • In this paper, we propose a method that applies Vector Fitting (VF) technique to the equivalent circuit model for RF passive components. These days wireless communication system is getting smaller and smaller. So EMI/EMC is an issue in RF. We can solve PI/SI (Power Integrity/Signal Integrity) that one of EMI/EMC problem apply IFFT for 3D EM simulation multiple with input signal. That is time consuming task. Therefore equivalent circuit model using RF passive component is important. VF schemes are implemented to obtain the rational functions. S parameters of the equivalent circuit model is compared to those of EM simulation in case of the microstrip line structure.

  • This study proposes a modeling process of equivalent terrains to reduce the computational load and time of a full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, an original terrain model with a size of $3m{\times}3m$ is equivalently quantized based on the minimum range resolution of a radar, and the radar image of the quantized model is compared with that of the original model. The results confirm that the simulation time can be reduced from 407 hours to 162 hours without a significant distortion of the radar images, and an average estimation error of the quantized model (20.4 mm) is similar to that of the original model (20.3 mm).

  • Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic (EM) survey must have the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There is a plethora of available techniques and instruments, and the depth of investigation and resolution are highly dependent on the particular systems used according to their operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. This diversity of EM systems, however, provides a wide range of instruments or methodologies to choose in order to select the most appropriate tool for the task in hand. This rather than being a disadvantage, would be a major strength of EM methods. Modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Coupled with major advances in recent computer technology, accurate modeling and interpretation techniques are on the way of continuous development and upgrade which, in turn, make the EM methods to become much more heavily used, especially for engineering and environmental applications. We aim to provide a brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.

  • In this work, a nano-size rocksalt crystal (magnesium oxide) is considered as a continuous collection of unit cells, while each unit cell consists of discrete atoms; and modeled by a multiscale concurrent atomic/continuum field theory. The response of the crystal to an electromagnetic (EM) wave is studied. Finite element analysis is performed by solving the governing equations of the multiscale theory. Due to the applied EM field, the inhomogeneous motions of discrete atoms in the polarizable crystal give rise to the change of microstructure and the polarization wave. The relation between the natural frequency of this system and the driving frequency of the applied EM field is found and discussed.

  • In this paper we developed a statistical model for circular data with noises. In this case, model fitting by single circular model has a lack-of-fit problem. To overcome this problem, we consider some mixture models that include circular uniform distribution and apply an EM algorithm to estimate the parameters. Both von Mises and Wrapped skew normal distributions are considered in this paper. Simulation studies are executed to assess the suggested EM algorithms. Finally, we applied the suggested method to fit 2008 EHFRS(Epidemic Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome) data provided by the KCDC(Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

  • Consider a cluster, so called a 'son cluster', whose mean and variance is composed of the means and variances of both clusters called as a 'father cluster' and a 'mother cluster'. In this paper, a method for identifying each of three clusters is provided by modeling the relationship with father and mother clusters. Under the normal mixture model, the parameters are estimated via EM algorithm. We were able to overcome the problems of estimation using ECM approximation. Numerical examples show that our method can effectively identify the three clusters, so called a 'family of clusters'.

  • In this paper we developed a statistical model for traffic volume data which collected from a spot of specific local state road. One peculiar property of daily traffic data is that it has bimodal shape which have two peaks on times of both going to office and coming back to home. So, various mixture models of circular distribution are suggested for bimodal traffic data and EM algorithms are applied to estimate the parameters of the suggested models. To compare the accuracy of the suggested models, classical regressions with dummy variables are also considered. The suggested models for traffic volumn data can be effectively used to estimate missing values due to measuring instrument disorder.

  • Among the geophysical exploration methods, electromagnetic method(EM) has the broadest range of instrumental systems and remarkable range of applications. There are a lot of available techniques and instruments which have different depth of investigation and resolution depending on the operating frequency and source-receiver configuration. Furthermore, it is very easy to apply on the engineering and environmental problems since modern EM equipments are remarkably portable, considering their sophistication. Even though electromagnetic theory is very complex and not easy to understand, rapid avances in recent computer technology have made it possible to conduct accurate forward modeling and inversion of various EM exploration data. Here, we are going to provide brief theoretical principles, survey techniques and case histories of some selected EM methods that can be applied to geotechnical and environmental problems in Korea.
