Degradation Characteristics of Eutectic and Pb-free Solder Joint of Electronics mounted for Automotive Engine (자동차 엔진룸용 전장품 유무연 솔더 접합부의 열화특성)

  • Due to environmental regulations (RoHS, WEEE and ELV) of the European Union, electronics and automotive electronics have to eliminate toxic substance from their devices and system. Especially, reliability issue of lead-free solder joint is increasing in car electronics due to ELV (End-of-Life Vehicle) banning from 2016. We have prepared engine control unit (ECU) modules soldered with Sn-40Pb and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solders, respectively. Degradation characteristics of solder joint strength were compared with various conditions of automobile environment such as cabin and engine room. Thermal cycle test (TC, $-40^{\circ}C$ ~ ($85^{\circ}C$ and $125^{\circ}C$), 1500 cycles) were conducted with automotive company standard. To compare shear strength degradation rate with eutectic and Pb-free solder alloy, we measured shear strength of chip components and its size from cabin and engine ECU modules. Based on the TC test results, finally, we have known the difference of degradation level with solder alloys and use environmental conditions. Solder joints degradation rate of engine room ECU is superior to cabin ECU due to large CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) mismatch in field condition. Degradation rate of engine room ECU is 50~60% larger than cabin room electronics.

  • In order to review the recycling status of urban mine resources in Taiwan, background and history of recycling industries, system of the recovery fund management committee(RFMC), copper recycling with non-ferrous metals, recycling of ELV(end of life vehicles) and recycling of EAF dust were surveyed. Taiwan is a leading country of the world in the metal consumption per capita. Therefore, a lot of waste metals were generated. In other words, urban mine resources are abundant in Taiwan and have some advantages in recycling. There are more than thou-sand recycling plants in Taiwan. Half of them are non-ferrous metal recyclers.

  • This study is aimed at compare and evaluate the environmental impact of End-of-Life Vehicle(ELV) on the eco-friendly technology dismantling and recycling system, using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. In this study, it was analyzed for the environmental impacts of raw materials, disassemble process, recycle parts separation and waste treatment into the process of ELV treatment by greenhouse gas and resource consumption, etc. Through this study, the indoor rail type dismantling technology were recycling rate applied on the alternate system was increased by approximately 8%. As a result, it was 3 to 88% by improving the environmental impact category. In addition, the added benefit of approximately 8 - 62% in pre-market occurred through the recycling rate, improve parts reuse rate of ELV. Through the results of this study, legal compliance, improved reuse and recycling ratio, used parts market reach, enable exports has identified the need for the effort that the dissemination and diffusion of eco-friendly technology.

International environmental regulations of global community to reduce the green house gases have influenced the domestic environmental policies. International trends of environmental regulation are introduced in this paper.

Specifically, reliability issue of lead-free solder joint have an increasing demand for the car electronics caused by ELV banning. The authors prepared engine control unit and cabin electronics soldered with Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305). To compare with the degradation characteristics of solder joint strength, thermal cycling test (TC), power-thermal cycling test (PTC) and series tests were conducted. Series tests were conducted for TC and PTC combined stress test using the same sample in sequence and continuously. TC test was performed at $-40{\sim}125^{\circ}C$ and soak time 10 min for 1000 cycles. PTC test was applied by pulse power and full function conditions during 100 cycles. Combined stress test was tested in accordance with automotive company standard. Solder joint degradation was observed by optical microscopy and environment scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). In addition, to compare with deterioration of bond strength of quad flat package (QFP) and chip components, we have measured lead pull and shear strength. Based on the series test results, consequently, we have validated of series test method for lifetime and reliability of Pb-free solder joint in automotive electronics.

  • 무연솔더 재료를 자동차 전장품에 적용하기 위해서는 고온환경에 대한 내구성 및 진동 인자에 대한 영향을 고려해야한다. 특히, ELV(End of Life Vehicles) 지침이 개정됨에 따라 고온용 무연솔더 재료에 대한 재평가가 반드시 필요한 시점이다. 이에 대해 본연구에서는 현재 상용화 된 Pb-free솔더의 재료들 중 총 4종의 Solder을 선정하여 자동차 환경에 부합하는 진동조건하에서 시험해보았다. 그리고 미세조직의 특성, 접합부 형성시의 기계적 강도 및 접합부의 신뢰성을 평가하여 보았다. 각각의 조성에 대한 CHIP type과 QFP type의 실장부품을 준비하였으며, 각각의 조성별로 솔더 페이스트로 Daisy Chain PCB에 접합하여 조성에 따른 비교 데이터를 구축할 수 있었다. 리플로우 공정후 초기의 미세조직 및 전당강도, 저항값을 측정하여 진동시험에 따른 데이터와 비교하였다. 주파수는 10Hz~1,000Hz였으며, 진동가속도는 $29.4m/s^2$, 20시간의 랜덤진동이 적용되는 동안 챔버내의 온도는 상온으로 유지되었다. 진동시험과 이에 따른 저항측정을 통하여 진동 주파수와 시간에 따른 실장 부품이 받는 진동 영향과 실시간 저항값을 측정하였으며, 이때의 미세조직 비교를 통해 진동특성을 평가하였다. 진동 주파수에 따른 저항값의 변화가 있었으며, 진동전후 전단강도에도 영향을 주었다. QFP type에서는 SAC105가 진동에 가장 취약하였으며, CHIP type에서는 SACX0307이 진동에 가장 취약하였다.

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Penicillium amestolkiae elv609 Extract Treated Cotton Fabric for Diabetic Wound Care

  • Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disorder which affects millions of population worldwide. Global estimates published in 2010 reported the world diabetic prevalence as 6.4%, affecting 285 million adults. Foot ulceration and wound infection are major forms of disabilities arising from diabetic diseases. This study was aimed to develop a natural antimicrobial finishing on medical grade textile that meets American Association of Textiles Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) standard. The textile samples were finished with the ethanolic extract of Penicillium amestolkiae elv609, an endophytic fungus isolated from Orthosiphon stamineus Benth (common name: cat's whiskers). Endophyte is defined as microorganism that reside in the living plant tissue, without causing apparent disease symptom to the host. The antimicrobial efficacy of the ethanolic extract of P. minioluteum was tested on clinical pathogens isolated from diabetic wound. The extract exhibited significant inhibitory activity against 4 bacteria and 1 yeast with the minimal inhibitory concentration ranged from 6.25 to 12.5 mg/mL. The results indicate different susceptibility levels of the test microorganism to the ethanolic extract. However, the killing activity of the extract was concentration-dependent. The finished medical textile showed excellent antimicrobial efficacy on AATCC test assays. All the microbial cultures treated with the textile sample displayed a growth reduction of 99.9% on Hoheinstein Challenge Test. The wash durability of the finished textile was found good even after 50 washes with commercial detergent. Besides, the gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed that 6-octadecenoic acid and diethyl phthalate were the main bioactive constituents of the extract. In conclusion, the developed medical textile showed good antimicrobial efficacy on laboratory tests. This work can be extended to in vivo trials for developing healthcare textile products for antimicrobial applications.

  • The end-of-life vehicles (ELV) are important recycling sources, and there are several stages involved in the recycling such as dismantling, shredding, and treatment of shredder residues (ASR). The legal recycling rate should be at least 95% on and after 2015, while we need a proper system to monitor recycling of ELV components and to calculate the practical recycling rate. The paper suggests a monitoring system that calculates practical recycling rates of dismantled components by use of a database of standard recycling rate as well as a web-based monitoring, which is linked to the Eco Assurance system for electric & electronic equipment and vehicle (EcoAS). Also the system supports dismantling and monitoring process by incorporating a standard vehicular component database, which facilitates recording dismantled weight data but also monitoring of dismantled components.

  • In order to review the recycling status of urban mine resources in Japan, metal consumption, metal recycling rate and metal recycling industry such as iron scrap, end of life vehiclcs(ELV), waste home appliances and spent IT equipments were surveyed. Japan took rank of top class in the world on the metal consumption and urban mine stock reserve. Metal recycling industries in Japan have been developed through excellent technologies for mineral processing and non-ferrous smelting. On the other hand, the technologies for recycling of rare metals are being developed now. Recycling rate of EL V, waste home appliances and personal computer are higher than the guidelines of the legislative standard.
