  • Point contact film thickness in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is analyzed by the image processing method for the monochromatic incident light. Interference between the reflected lights both on Cr coating of glass disk and on super finished ball makes circular fringes, which are regarded as film thickness together with numbering of fringe order. In this study, we developed technology to measure the film thickness by analyzing dark and bright intensity waves which results from monochrome green light. Two typical fringe patterns only with intensity values 3re examined for the measurement of point contact EHL film thickness. We expect that this technology will give valuable clue to improve color image processing analysis for high resolution of EHL film thickness with white incident light.

  • Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis shows that film thickness is very flat in the contact area and pressure distribution is somehow similar to that of Hertzian contact pressure except the outlet region with pressure spike. These typical patterns of EHL film thickness and pressure are the cases under the steady contact conditions of applied loads and speeds. However, many engineering contacts are rather under the conditions of varying loads and contact speeds, and therefore the predictions for endurance life and performance of machine elements with steady EHL analysis are not suitable in many occasions. This study shows the differences in film thickness formation and pressure distribution between steady and transient contact conditions in several contact cases.

  • Many research of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) has been performed under the condition of steady state loading. However, mechanical elements undergo severe high loads that are in the fluctuating modes of frequency and amplitude. Conventional numerical method for the circular contact of EHL study has the difficulty in making the film thickness and pressure of EHL converged in high loads of steady state as well as fluctuating loading conditions. In this work, multigrid multilevel method are used for the stable convergence of film pressure and thickness under the conditions of high as well as varying loads, and very stable solutions of film behaviors with elastic deformation are obtained. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition in the aspects of circular EHL film thickness and pressure.

Variations of the minimum film thickness with dimensionless parameters show considerably different from those of infinite solutions.

  • In this study, the effects of Elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure on the critical shoulder height of raceway in an angular contact ball bearing were investigated. Both 3D contact analyses using an influence function and the EHL analysis were conducted for the contact geometry between the ball and raceways. The pressure distributions by 3D contact analysis and EHL analysis for an example bearing were compared. The effect of ellipse truncation on the minimum film thickness also investigated from EHL analysis. The critical shoulder height in the dry contact and the EHL state were compared for various applied loads. It is shown that when the ellipse truncation occurs, the pressure spike for the EHL conjunction is higher than that for the dry contact, and its location moves more inward of the contact center. The steep pressure gradients would increase the flow rate, so in order to maintain flow continuity a significant reduction in film thickness and an abrupt rise in pressure occurs in the edge of shoulder. Significant reduction of the minimum film thickness occurs near the edge of shoulder. The critical shoulder heights in the EHL state are calculated as higher values compared with in the dry contact. This results shows that the determination of critical shoulder height by the EHL analysis is more proper.

  • Many research of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) has been performed under the condition of steady state loding. However, mechanical elements undergo severe high loads that are fluctuating in general. Conventional numerical method for the circular contact of EHL study has a difficulty in converging the film pressure and thickness especially in high load of steady state. In this work, multigrid multilevel method expels the convergence problem under the condition of high load and very stable convergence is obtained under the dynamic loading condition over 1.0GPa. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition.

  • Many technologies are applied to the measurement of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film thickness. In particular, optical in-situ interferometric method has many advantages in making the actual contact behaviors realized with the experimental apparatus. Careful selection of incident lights greatly enhances the fringe resolution up to nanometer scale by using image processing technology. In this work, it is found that dichromatic incident light can provide much finer resolution of EHL film thickness than monochromatic incident light, because it has much more variables of color components to be discriminated among the wavelengths of colors according the variations of EHL film thickness. Some simulated interferometric images are shown how the film thickness is resolutionized in nanometer scale

  • This paper presents analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of ball bearings, in which surface roughness is considered. A lot of time is required to obtain a solution in the case of EHL analysis where surface roughness is considered, because the analysis requires a variety of analytic nodes. To save time, we use the full approximation scheme (FAS) among multilevel methods. We analyze the results of EHL and contact analyses in terms of pressure. We also compare the results for smooth and rough surfaces with respect to film thickness. We confirm that the film pressure decreases as compared to contact pressure because of the presence of lubricants between the ball and the raceway. Furthermore, in the case when surface roughness is considered, the film pressure increases because of contact asperities. Therefore, surface roughness should be considered when designing ball bearings.

  • The profile of the roller in the axial direction is the main design factor in order to increase endurance life against the contact fatigue due to the stress concentration along the edge of the roller. Even under the elas-tohydrodynamic lubrication (ehl) conditions, the stress concentration along the edge of the roller greatly worsens the fatigue life both for the roller and contacting body. In this study, roller contacts of finite axial length are studied for the film thickness and pressure of ehl. For the real contact behaviors under the ehl conditions, multigrid and multi-level method is applied so that much higher loading conditions can be investigated. Several axial profiles of roller are investigated to verify how both ehl film and pressure are generated and some of them are recommended for the ehl contact condition.

  • In this study, the simulation of rolling contact fatigue based on stress analysis is conducted under Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication state. To predict a crack initiation life accurately, it is necessary to calculate contact stress and subsurface stresses accurately. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of a semi-infinile solid based on the use of influence functions and the subsurface stress field is obtained using rectangular patch solutions. And a numerical algorithm using Newton-Rapson method was constructed to calculate the Elastohydrodynamic lubrication pressure. Based on these stress values, several multiaxial high-cycle fatigue criteria are used and the critical loads corresponding to fatigue limits are calculated.
