  • Even if EGR is known as a technology which dramatically reduces NOx emission, its application is a quite complicate since it affects fuel economy and increase of PM emission. Therefore, it is a very important issue to investigate an optimal EGR rate considering all engine parameters. This research was numerically conducted to predict combustion and emission characteristics with respect to various EGR rates.

  • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is more effective than selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) for the reduction of $NO_x$ emissions in diesel engines. A large amount of EGR gas is necessary to satisfy the stringent regulations on $NO_x$ emissions. Low pressure loop (LPL) EGR is almost independent of the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) at a specific boost pressure, so LPL EGR is better than conventional high pressure loop (HPL) EGR in terms of EGR supply. We compare the influence of HPL EGR and LPL EGR on the combustion characteristics at a constant boost pressure in a diesel engine. The dilution ratio was employed as an independent parameter to analyze the effect of the dilution of the intake charge for each EGR loop. At the same level of $NO_x$ emissions, the fuel consumption and smoke opacity were slightly lower for LPL EGR than for HPL EGR.

  • NOx (Nitrogen oxide) in the exhaust gas from vehicle engines is considered one of the most harmful substances in air pollution problems. NOx is made when combustion occurs under high temperature conditions and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is normally used to lower the combustion temperature. As the EGR ratio increases, the NOx level becomes low, but a high EGR ratio makes the combustion unstable and causes further air pollution problems, such as CO and unburned hydrocarbon level increase. This study showed that fuel droplets could move more freely by the radiation of sonic wave for the stable combustion. In addition, the engine performance improved with increasing EGR ratio. As a basic study, the effect of sonic wave radiation on the velocity of fuel droplets was studied using CFD software. The results showed that the velocity of small droplets increased more under high frequency sonic wave conditions and the velocity of the large droplets increased at low frequency sonic wave conditions. In addition, an engine analysis model was used to study the effects of the increased combustion stability. These results showed that a 15% increase in EGR ratio in combustion resulted in a 45% decrease in NOx and a 10% increase in thermal efficiency.

  • Current common rail engines are equipped with cooled EGR systems by using an engine cooling water system. In this study, investigations of exhaust gas reduction characteristics have been carried out in the common rail engine system depending on the EGR rate variation. The experimental results shows that NOx reduces and smoke increases as the EGR rate increases.

  • Diesel engines are widely used due to superior power and fuel consumption, however there are many challenges in exhaust gas management. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the most effective technique for reducing mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions in a diesel engine, in comparison with other catalytic technologies. In addition, the technology has a number of advantages in terms of economic efficiency and implementation. In this study, the effects on the power and exhaust characteristics of diesel engines equipped with EGR systems were investigated. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, horsepower expressed as IHP and BHP decreased. The net effect of the application of EGR was measured at various engine speeds. EGR technology caused decreases in BHP of around 9% during low engine speed and 3.5% during high engine speed. Additionally, NOx emissions reduced as the EGR rate increased, and increased as engine speed increased. However, smoke emissions increased as the EGR rate increased, and decreased as engine speed increased. The optimum operating conditions and ERG rate to simultaneously achieve minimum NOx and smoke emissions were investigate. It was found that as the EGR rate increased, optimal operating speed for minimal NOx and smoke also increased. • Recently, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system which re-flow a cooled exhaust gas from vehicles burning diesel as fuel to a combustion chamber of engine has been used to solve the serious air pollution. For the design and mass production of EGR system, it is essential to ensure structural integrity evaluation. The EGR system consisted of ten dimpled oval core rectangular tubes, two fix-plates, two coolant pipes, shell body and two flanges in this study. To confirm the safety of the designed system, finite element modeling about each component such as the dimpled oval core tube with the dimpled shape and others was carried out. The reliability of EGR system against exhaust gas flow with high temperature was investigated by flow and pressure analysis in the system. Also, thermal and strength analysis were verified the safety of EGR system against temperature change in the shell and tubes. Furthermore, modal analysis using ANSYS was also performed. From the results of FE analysis, there were confirmed that EGR system was safe against the flow of exhaust gas, temperature change in EGR system and vibration on operation condition, respectively.

  • EGR is an efficient method for reduction of NOx from diesel exhaust emission since it is simple to install with low cost and effective in its performance however it has demerits such as incresing wear on the moving parts of engines. stainning intake system and deteriorate lubricating oil. In order to reduce the soot contents in the recirculating gas to intake system of the engine, a proper filtering device was desined and manufactered for experiment system. It is aimed to grasp the characteristics of pollutant emissions including SFC on EGR system equipped with soot removal device.

  • This paper describes the homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine for a new concept. HCCI engines are being considered as a future alternative for diesel and gasoline engines. HCCI engines have the potential for high indicated thermal efficiency under part load and very low NOx emissions. The objective of this paper is to clear the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate on the HCCI. For this purpose, a 4-cylinder, compression ignition engine was converted into a HCCI engine This work has been run with propane and butane fuels at a constant speed.

  • In this paper, the combination effects of oxygen component in fuel and exhaust gas recirculation on the exhaust emissions have been investigated for a direct injection diesel engine. It is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of diether group that the smoke emission of DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether) blended fuel is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. But, NOx emission of oxygenated fuel was increased compared with commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel(DGM 5vol-%) and cooled EGR method(10∼15%).
