The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption have been investigated using an eight-cylinder, four cycle, direct injection diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. The experiments in this study are conducted on the fixed fuel injection timing of $38^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. In conclusion, it is found that $NO_{x}$ emission is markedly reduced with the drop of burnt gas temperature at high speeds and loads especially as the EGR rate increases, while the soot particulate rises with EGR rate and load at a given engine speed, especially high loads. The reduction of exhaust emissions within the Korea heavy duty diesel engine emission standards can be roughly achieved by the optimal EGR rate without degarding the specific fuel consumption, based on the correlations between exhaust emissions.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system is used to reduce NOx emission, to improve fuel economy, and to suppress knock since it offers the benefits of the inlet charge dilution. The effects of EGR was investigated on the performance and emission to reduce exhaust thermal load with a single cylinder liquid-phase LPG injection engine, in a wide range of EGR rate, engine conditions and LPG proportions. As EGR rate was increased, NOx was reduced while HC was increased. Pumping loss reduction by EGR improved bsfc and increased EGR lowered exhaust gas temperature. And, LPG proportions were made a difference on the performance and emission characteristics.

EGR is applied in order to lower temperature of combustion chamber by using the specific heat of carbon dioxide in engine exhaust gas. However, the problem of EGR system in diesel engine is high PM concentration. Combined EGR system can be reduced it by mixing exhaust gas of gas engine into the intake air of diesel engine. This experimental study was designed for EGR system for both engines use. The results of EGR experimental study by using diesel engine and gas engine are as follows. 1) The pressure of combustion and rate of heat release decreased. 2) The specific fuel consumption increased. But, up to middle load, it little increased. 3) NO concentration has decreased up to 50% in almost all combustion area. 4) The variation of the PM concentration at low load is not so seen. But at high load, PM increased rapidly when concentration of oxygen is decreased and most of it caused the increasing of Dry Soot.

Residual gas acts as a diluent which results in reducing the in-cylinder temperature as well as the flame speed, significantly affecting fuel economy, NOx emissions and combustion stability. Therefore it is important to determine the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating parameters accurately. However, the determination of the residual gas fraction is very sophisticated due to the unsteady state of induction and exhaust process. There has been little work toward the development of a generally applicable model for quantitative predictions of residual gas fraction. In this paper, a simple model for calculating the residual gas fraction in SI engines was suggested. The amount of fresh air was evaluated through AFR and fuel consumption. After this, from the intake temperature and pressure, the amount of total cylinder-charging gas was estimated. The residual gas fraction was derived by comparing the total charging and fresh air. This results coincide with measured EGR value very well.

The present study examined the possibility of NOx reduction in the high temperature industrial furnaces, duct burner of gas turbine cogeneration and two-stage gas turbine combustor. The experimental study was carried out for the non-premixed flame of second stage combustor with the variations of oxygen concentration in the hot exhaust gas of first stage combustor. It also examined the flammability range, temperature and NOx, $CO_2$, $O_2$formation in the combustor with respect to oxygen concentration in which the fuel(natural gas) is supplying into the hot exhaust gas. The results show that the inner temperature of flame reaches 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ at EGR $O_2$23% and that 15ppm of NOx at EGR $O_2$15.5% increases up to 60ppm at EGR $O_2$23%. It is believed that Fenimore's prompt NOx mechanism is more influential on the NOx formation than Zeldovich's thermal NOx mechanism does.
Lower recirculated gas temperature at EGR system reduces NOx and PM emissions. However, EGR Cooler can be polluted by PM generated from recirculated EGR gas, and it reduces cooling efficiency and the amount of EGR gas simultaneously. The SECFR(Steam EGR Cooler Fouling Remover) system which uses the evaporated washer fluid steam caused by high temperature of EGR gas was manufactured for removing fouling generated on the cooler surface. Since an injection pressure of wind shield washer fluid in the vehicle is approximately 0.5 bar, it is not enough to atomize the injected washer fluid. Thus, it is necessary to apply a method to atomize the washer fluid. In this study, the impinging plate was used to promote the atomization of spray washer fluid for the purpose of apply SECFR system to vehicles and measured the DAR(Droplet Area Ratio) and DUI(Droplet Uniformity Index) through the spray visualization.

This study analyzed the effect of four control factors, RPM, load, EGR rate and cooling water temperature on the exhaust emissions of the small DI diesel engine. The amount of NOx and smoke emissions were measured through experiments for three levels of four control factors according to orthogonal array table, and the effect of four factors on NOx and smoke emissions was analyzed quantitatively. The main results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. RPM, load and EGR rate have a great influence on NOx and smoke emissions, and the effect of cooling water temperature is negligible. 2. As RPM and load increases NOx emission increases and decreases sharply as the EGR rate increases. 3. Smoke emission decreases or increases randomly according to RPM and load, but increases sharply in proportion to the EGR rate. 4. EGR rate has the greatest effect on NOx and smoke emissions by more than 60% of contribution to variance, especially in the case of NOx emission, EGR rate represents a significant result even under the confidence level of 99% on ANOVA.

In this study, cycle simulation was performed to investigate the effect of EGR on combustion characteristics and emissions including NO and soot using a two-zone model in a DI diesel engine. The NO formation was well predicted for different EGR rate and temperature using a two-zone model. The oxygen in the inlet charge was replaced by CO$_2$ and H$_2$O with EGR. The reduction in the inlet charge oxygen resulted in very large reduction in NO level at the same inlet charge temperature. The effect of EGR was to reduce the burned gas temperature. When EGR was increased from 0% to 15%, the peak flame temperature was decreased by 50$\^{C}$ and it caused about 57% NO reduction. EGR caused increase of the overall inlet charge temperature which offset some of benefit of lower flame temperature resulting from O$_2$ displacement. Cooling the EGR was confirmed to provide additional benefits by lowering NO emission. It also reduced soot emission.
We examined the characteristics of $NO_x$ emission for CH4/air non-premixed flames using the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) methods, which are the air-induced EGR(AI-EGR) and fuel-induced EGR(FI-EGR) methods. Our experimental results show that the $NO_x$ emission index($EI_{NOx}$) decreased with increasing EGR ratio. In the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 29% when the EGR ratio was 20%, and the reduction rate for the AI-EGR method was approximately 28% with 25% of the EGR ratio. According to the flame structure based on numerical results, high temperature regions for the FI-EGR method were narrower and lower than those for the AI-EGR method at the same EGR ratio. Furthermore, based on the experimental results for swirl flames, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 49% with 15% of the EGR ratio, while the maximum reduction rate for AI-EGR method was approximately 45% with 25% of the EGR ratio. Consequently, we verified that the FI-EGR method was more effective than the AI-EGR method in reducing $NO_x$ emission for non-premixed flames with EGR. We expect that the results of this study will provide fundamental information relating to hybrid combustion systems, which can be used in the design of combustion systems in the future.
