Purpose: This study aims to examine the power changes in eletrocenphalogram (EEG) detected from the tibialis anterior muscle, during repetitive contraction exercise in normal female adults. Methods: The subjects of this study were 24 normal adult females, with no musculoskeletal or nervous system disorders. The 24 female subjects were divided into two groups: 12 subjects comprised a voluntary stimulation training group, and the other 12 subjects comprised an electrical stimulation training group. A total of thirty contractions were made repetitively by each woman, with maximal voluntary contraction exercise for six seconds, and a resting time of three seconds. During the experiment, their EEG was measured at eight positions. The eight positions were Fpz, Fz, Cz, CPz, C3, C4, P3, and P4, in accordance with the international 10~20 system. Results: The relative alpha power and beta power showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. But the relative gamma power of the CPz, C3, C4, P3, and P4 areas showed statistically significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). The relative theta power of the C4 area showed statistically significant differences between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings show that tibialis anterior muscle contraction by electrical stimulation and by voluntary repeated contraction differentially affected brain activation. In particular, the CPz, C3, C4, P3 positions of relative gamma power showed brain activation in voluntary contraction. The C4 position of relative theta power showed different brain activation between the two groups.
30명의 건강한 대학생 지원자들이 IADS(International Affective Digital Sounds) 실험에 참여하였다.
(Multimodal Resource for Studying Information Processing in the Developing Brain, MIPDB)를 분석하였고, 정신과적 질환이 있거나, 잡파가 심한 뇌파의 피험자는 제외하여 최종적으로 6~9세(n = 14)와 14~17세(n = 11)을 대상으로, EEGlab을 이용하여 뇌파를 분석하였고, 적어도 2분이상의 휴지기 뇌파 중 눈을 감은 상태의 뇌파를 이용하여 주파수 분석을 하였다.
This study investigated EEG signal, subjective fragrance sensation, and the preference of differently colored cotton knit treated with Citrus unshiu oil containing microcapsules as well as examined their relationships for providing regression models on subjective fragrance preference. Color variables combining 2-level hue (Yellow and Green) and 3-level tone (strong, pale, and grayish) were applied by dyeing prior to microcapsule treatment. We invited 28 female college students aged 20's for EEG signal experiments and subjective fragrance sensations with fragrant knit by rubbing. EEG signals at $mid-{\alpha}$, $fast-{\alpha}$, and $low-{\beta}$ showed significant differences depending on color; Green had more relative power values and grayish tone did more at $low-{\beta}$. Even though subjective sensation showed no significant differences depending on color, some of them such as Fresh, Comfort, and Natural showed significant correlations with EEG signal at $low-{\beta}$, which means that the fragrance sensations of Citrus unshiu fragrance are concerned with attention and alertness for Koreans. Fragrance preference was regressed significantly using some EEG signals and subjective sensation. The results could be utilized to value up fragrant textiles by Citrus unshiu oil.
During a learning process, a human being is assumed to experience knowledge-based behaviors, rule-based behaviors, and skill-based behaviors sequentially if Rasmussen was right. If any psycho-physiological symptom to those different levels can be obtained, it can be useful as a measure whether a human being is fully trained and has gotten a skill in his work. Therefore, this study aimed to draw relationships between human performance measures and psycho-physiological measures while committing a computer-simulated pointing task by utilizing the power spectrum technique of EEG data, especially with the ratio of relative beta-to-alpha band power. The result showed that, during correct responses, the ratio came to stabilize as all the performance data went stable. However, response time was not a simple linear function of task difficulty level only, but a joint function of task characteristics as well as behavior levels. Comparing relative band power ratios from errors and correct responses, activated states of one's brain could be explained, and characteristics of the task could understood. To tell that of pointing task, correlations around C3, C4, P3, P4 and 01, 02 area were significant and high in correct response cases whereas most correlation coefficients went down in error cases standing for imbalance of psycho-motor functions. Though task difficulty was the only one factor that could influence on relative band power ratio with statistical significance, it should be comprehended to mean a different way of expression indicating task characteristics since at least error-some situation could be explained with the help of relative band power ratio that absolute band power failed.
In this paper, we present electroencephalography (EEG)-based power spectra analysis and auditory stimuli methods as coping mechanisms for disgust affection and phobia. Disgust affection is a negative emotion generated from trying to eliminate something harmful to one. It is usually related to mental illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, specifically phobia and depression. In our experiments, participants watched videos on horrible body mutilation and disgusting creatures, with either the original sound track or relaxing and exciting music as auditory stimulation. After watching the videos with original sound track, the participants watched the same video with a different audio background, such as soothing or cheerful music. We analyzed the EEG data utilizing relative power spectra and examined survey results of the participants. The results demonstrated that disgust affection is decreased when participants watched the video with relaxing or exciting music instead of the original soundtracks. Moreover, we confirmed that human's brainwave reacts according to types of audio and sources of disgust affection.
Hemispheric asymmetry in prefrontal activation have been proposed in two decades ago, as measured by electroencephalographic (EEG) power in the theta band (4-8Hz), is related to reactivity to affectively pleasure audio stimuli. In this study, we designed an emotional audio stimulus experiment in order to verify frontal EEG asymmetry by analyzing ERSP results. Thirty healthy college students volunteered the stimulus experiment with the standard IADS affective sounds. These affective sound clips are classified in three emotion states, happy, neutral and fear. ERSP image results revealed that there are the stronger responses of high arousal (fear and happy) in the left prefrontal lobe, while the stronger responses of low arousal (neutral) in the right pre-frontal lobe. However, the high pleasure emotions (happy) can elicit greater relative right EEG activity, while the low and middle pleasure emotions (fear and neutral) can elicit the greater relative left EEG activity. Additionally, the most response differences of theta band have been found out in the medial frontal lobe, which is proved as the frontal midline theta.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in motor cortical excitability during mental practice and action observation in subjects with forward head posture. Methods : This study was performed in two groups, a forward head posture group (n=17) and a normal posture group (n=17). Electroencephalography (EEG) was conducted to investigate cerebral cortex activity, and six electrodes were attached to Fp1, Fp2, C1, C2, C3, and C4 to measure the relative alpha power, relative beta power, relative gamma power, and mu rhythms. The subjects were requested to perform the four different conditions, which were eye opening, eye closing, mental practice, and action observation for 300 seconds. Results : The results showed that the relative alpha waves showed a significant difference between the normal and forward head posture groups in the C1, C2, C3, and C4 regions with the eyes open (p<.05). The relative beta waves also showed a significant difference between the two groups in the Fp1 and Fp2 regions during action observation (p<.05). The relative gamma waves were significantly different between the normal and forward head posture groups in the Fp1 and Fp2 regions during action observation (p<.05) in C1, C2, and C3 with eyes closed (p<.05) and in C1, C2, C3, and C4 with eyes open (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study showed that EEG change in the forward head posture group was different from that in the normal control group in action observation rather than in mental practice. Therefore, we are expected to provide a neurophysiological basis for applying action observation to motor skill learning during exercise for correcting forward head posture.
