  • Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) have saturated the technological market but are still widely used in high-speed and long-distance communication systems. To overcome EDFA saturation and limitations, its erbium-doped fiber is co-doped with other materials such as zirconia and bismuth. This article demonstrates and compares the performance using three different fibers as the gain medium for zirconia-erbium-doped fibers (Zr-EDF), bismuth-erbium-doped fibers (Bi-EDF), and commercial silica-erbium-doped fibers (Si- EDF). The optical amplifier was configured with a double-pass amplification system, with a broadband mirror at the end of its configuration to allow double-pass operation in the system. The important parameters in amplifiers such as optical properties, optical amplification and noise values were also examined and discussed. All three fibers were 0.5 m long and entered with different input signals: 30 dBm for low input and 10 dBm for high input. Zr-EDF turned out to be the most relevant optical amplifier as it had the highest optical gain, longest transmission distance, highest average flatness gain with minimal jitter, and relevant noise figures suitable for the latest communication technology.

  • The Stack Resource Policy (SRP) is a real-time synchronization protocol with some distinct properties. One of such properties is early blocking; the execution of a job is delayed instead of being blocked when requesting shared resources. If SRP is used with dynamic priority scheduling such as Earliest Deadline First (EDF), the early blocking requires that a scheduler should select the highest-priority job among the jobs that will not be blocked, incurring runtime overhead. In this paper, we analyze the runtime overhead of EDF scheduling when SRP is used. We find out that the overhead of job search using the conventional implementations of ready queue and job search algorithms becomes serious as the number of jobs increases. To solve this problem, we propose an alternative data structure for the ready queue and an efficient job-search algorithm with O([log$_2n$]) time complexity.

  • This paper proposes an analysis method to check the schedulability of a set of sporadic tasks under earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduler. The sporadic task model consists of subtasks with precedence constraints, arbitrary arrival times and deadlines. In order to determine the schedulability, we present an approach to find exact worst case response time (WCRT) of subtatsks. With the technique presented in this paper, we exploit the precedence relations between subtasks in an accurate way while taking advantage of the deadline of different subtasks. Another nice feature of our approach is that it avoids calculation time overhead by exploiting the concept of deadline busy period. Experimental results show that this consideration leads to a significant improvement compared with existing work.

  • We propose an erbium-doped fiber ring laser whose multi-wavelength oscillation is tunable and switchable by tuning fiber bragg gratings. By applying axial pressure on the fiber bragg grating, the wavelength spacing of the proposed laser can be tuned continuously. And by adjusting a polarization controller(PC), the proposed laser can be switched among dual-, triple- and four-wavelength lasing operations.

  • A sensor network is a special network that makes physical data sensed by sensor nodes and manages the data. The sensor network is a technology that can apply to many parts of field. It is very important to transmit the data to a user at real-time. The core of the sensor network is a sensor node and small operating system that works in the node. TinyOS developed by UC Berkeley is a sensor network operating system that used many parts of field. It is event-driven and component-based operating system. Basically, it uses non-preemptive scheduler. If an urgent task needs to be executed right away while another task is running, the urgent one must wait until another one is finished. Because of that property, it is hard to guarantee real-time requirement in TinyOS. According to recent study, Priority Level Scheduler, which can let one task preempt another task, was proposed in order to have fast response in TinyOS. It has restrictively 5 priorities, so a higher priority task can preempt a lower priority task. Therefore, this paper suggests Preemptive EDF(Earliest Deadline First) Scheduler that guarantees a real-time requirement and reduces average respond time of user tasks in TinyOS.

  • This study was conducted in order to investigate the distribution pattern of weeds and ecological characteristics on the dry field in the Eastern region of Korea. The weed species data were obtained from 12 regions in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsang-do. 150 taxa were recorded from three main distinguished habitats; inside of dry field (IDF), embankment around the end of dry field (EDF), levee slope of dry field (LS). The weed species of three different habitats were IDF 83 taxa, EDF 133 taxa and LS 105 taxa. The species showing higher rNCD value was Portulaca oleracea in IDF, Digitaria sanguinalis in EDF and Humulus japonicus in LS. Compositae was dominant family followed by Gramineae, Polygonaceae and Leguminosae. Life form was distinguished as Th-R5-D4-e and three different habitats showed the same results. Disturbance index was analysed as IDF 83.1%, EDF 68.4%, and LS 62.9%. Naturalized rate was analysed as IDF 28.9%, EDF 22.6%, and LS 20.0%. These results indicate that the weeding management, land use intensity, and human interference effect on the distribution index and naturalized rate of weed.

  • Cumulative residual Kullback-Leibler (CRKL) information is well defined on the empirical distribution function (EDF) and allows us to construct a EDF-based goodness of t test statistic. However, we need to consider a scaled CRKL because CRKL is not scale invariant. In this paper, we consider several criterions for estimating the scale parameter in the scale CRKL and compare the performances of the estimated CRKL in terms of both power and unbiasedness.
