Gradient YZO Buffer Deposition on RABiTS for Coated Conductor

  • In general, high temperature superconducting coated conductors have intermediary buffers layer consisting of seed, diffusion barrier and cap layers. Simplification of the oxide materials buffer architecture in the fabrication of high temperature superconducting coated conductors is required because the deposition of multi-layers buffer architecture leads to a longer manufacturing time and a higher cost process of coated conductors. Thus, single buffer layer deposition seems to be important for practical coated conductor manufacturing process. In this study, a single gradient layered buffer deposition process of YZO for low cost coated conductors has been tried using DC reactive sputtering technique. About several thick YZO gradient single buffer layers deposited by DC co-sputtering process were found to act as a diffusion layer.

  • We have fabricated SmBCO coated conductor on IBAD-MgO substrates using unique co-evaporation method. The batch type co-deposition system was specially designed and named as EDDC(evaporation using drum m dual chamber) that is possible to deposit superconducting layer with different composition ratio at low temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. In this study, we have investigated the influence of SmBCO phase composition and texture of IBAD-MgO template on the critical current density. We have changed the deposition rates of Sm, Ba and Cu during co-evaporation to examine the optimal composition ratio shown better critical current density. The composition ratio and surface morphology of SmBCO coated conductors were analyzed by the EDX and SEM, respectively. A higher critical current density was measured at superconducting phase composition ratio of Ba deficiency, Sm or Cu rich compared to the Sm1Ba2Cu3Ox stoichiometry.

  • GdBCO coated conductor have been fabricated using reactive co-evaporation. The batch type co-deposition system was specially designed and was named EDDC (evaporation using drum in dual chamber) that is possible to deposit superconducting layer with optimum composition ratio of materials at temperature over $700^{\circ}C$ and several mTorr of oxygen. The IBAD-MgO substrate with the architecture of LaMnO3(LMO)/IBAD-MgO/Hastelloy was used for coated conductor. In this study, GdBCO superconducting layer was deposited on IBAD-MgO substrate at optimal oxygen partial pressure (pO2) and deposition temperature. After fabrication of GdBCO coated conductor, critical current density was measured by 4-probe method. Surface morphology and texture of GdBCO coated conductors were analyzed by the SEM and XRD, respectively.

  • Coated conductor is required to have good critical current property for high efficiency of electric power applications. Until now, long coated conductor does not show high Jc over 3 MA/$cm^2$ in thick superconducting layer because of texture degradation by thick superconducting layer. In this study, in order to overcome this issue, thicker superconducting layer was deposited with optimized conditions to reduce the degradation of critical current density. SmBCO superconducting coated conductor was deposited with 1~3 um of thickness at $750\sim850^{\circ}C$ under 15~20 mTorr of oxygen partial pressure using batch type EDDC( evaporation using drum in dual chamber). The buffered substrate for superconducting layer deposition was used IBAD-MgO template with the architecture of $LaMnO_3/MgO/Y_2O_3/Al_2O_3$/Hastelloy. After fabrication of coated conductor, critical current was measured by 4-prove method under self-magnetic field and 77K. In addition, surface morphology and texture were analyzed by SEM and XRD, respectively. 3 um thick SmBCO coated conductor shows highest $I_C$ values of 638A/cm-w in 1 m long in the world.

  • The high critical current ($I_c$, A) of SmBCO coated conductor in a magnetic field, the high production rate and the high material yield are promising for applications. The inhomogeneity of Ie at the long length coated conduct is very important problem for electric application. So we researched the reason of inhomogeneity of $I_c$ at long length tape prepared by batch type co-evaporation system called by EDDC. The long length SmBCO coated conductors were developed on $LaMnO_3/IBAD-MgO/Y_2O_3/Al_2O_3$/Hastelloy C276 template. The distribution of $I_c$ are from 0 to 397 A/cm at 77 K and self field. We have studied the microstructures of these films by using SEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction. The XRD and composition by EDS results of SmBCO film reveals subtle difference. But, the microscopic observation by SEM show the microcrack at the sample with low $I_c$.

  • High temperature superconducting coated conductor has multi-layer structure of protecting layer/superconducting layer/buffer layer/metallic substrate. The buffer layer consists of multi layer, and the architecture most widely used in RABiTS approach is $CeO_2$(cap layer)/YSZ(diffusion barrier layer)/$CeO_2$(seed layer). Multi-buffer layer deposition required many times and process. Therefore single buffer layer deposition study reduce 2G HTS manufacture efforts. Evaporation technique for single buffer deposition method is used for the $CeO_2$ layer. $CeO_2$ single buffer film could be achieved in the chamber. Detailed deposition conditions (temperature and partial gas pressure of deposition) were investigated for the rapid growth of high quality $CeO_2$ single buffer film.

  • We have investigated the superconducting properties and surface morphology of $Sm_xBa_yCu_3O_{6+z}$ thin films deposited on LMO/IBAD-MgO/Hastelloy which prepared with different composition ratio by co-evaporation method(EDDC, Evaporation using Drum in Dual Chambers). We observed the composition ratio of SmBCO thin films by EDS analysis. We fabricated SmBCO thin film with critical current density of $1.5{\times}10^6A/cm^2$ at composition ratio of SM:Ba:Cu=1.10:2.01:3(at 77 K self-field). And, we confirmed that substitution of Sm-Ba did not occur at Cu rich phase by EDS analysis.

  • The superconducting properties of several HTS coated conductors (CC), which had different tape structures, fabricated by KERI, X and Y institutes were compared. We have fabricated the $high-J_c$ SmBCO CC, which has 273.5 A/cm, $1.2MA/cm^2$ and 93.5 K for $I_C,\;J_C\;and\;T_{c-zero}$, respectively, using the EDDC (Evaporation using Drum in Dual Chambers) process. Both X and Y institutes CCs, however, were purchased. The n-values of KERI, X and Y institutes CCs are 58.5, 40.7 and 31.5 in $V=1{\sim}10{\mu}V$ criterion, respectively. The in-field properties of $I_C$ at 77K were investigated and the $J_C(B)/J_C(0G)$ at 0.5 T with $B{\perp}$ ab-plane are 0.31, 0.19 and 0.24 for KERI, X and Y institutes CCs, respectively. From the $I_C-{\theta}-B$ measurement, we observed that the ab-plane of ReBCO phase was tilted for the ab-plane of substrate in the KERI and X institutes CCs. The tilted angle is about 5 degree. We confirmed that the peak shift (as an inclined texture) was observed by X-ray (102) pole figures of the SmBCO for the KERI CC.
