  • $^13C$ and $^51V$ NMR spectroscopy have been used to study the solution structures of the vanadium (v) complexes formed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), trans-cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CDTA), 1,2-propylenediaminetetraacetic acid (PDTA), ethylenediaminediacetic acid (EDDA), 2-hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA), diethylenetriaminepentacetic acid (DPTA), and nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). All of the complexes probably have octahedral structures containiing cis-$VO_2$ core. The coordination of hydroxylethyl group is found to be less favored than that of acetate group. EDDA forms two isomers, ${\alpha}$-cis and ${\beta}$-cis. PDTA also forms two structural isomers due to the methyl group in the ligand.

  • Efficient one-pot synthesis of arylmethylene bis(3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexene-1-ones) and xanthenediones by EDDA and In($OTf)_3$-catalyzed reactions was developed starting from dimedone and aryl aldehydes. The key strategies of these reactions involve domino Knoevenagel/Michael reaction or Koevenagel/Michael/Cyclodehydration reactions. The scope and limitation of the two catalysts under various reaction conditions were investigated and described.

  • Chalcones have been reported to have various biological activities including antitumor, antiparasitic, antileishmanial, antioxidative, superoxide scavenging, antibacterial, and PTP1B activity. Due to the limited natural resources, we had to prepare sizable quantities of biologically active chalcones for bio-tests. Therefore, Claisen-Schmidt condensation between substituted acetophenones and corresponding aldehydes enabled us to prepare chalcones for inflammatory studies. Chalcones thus prepared showed significant suppression of nitric oxide (NO) production at $10{\mu}M$.

  • The stability constants of complexes between rare earth elements(Yb, Dy, Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce, La) and ethylenediaminediacetic acid(EDDA) have been measured for the separation of rare earth elements by potentiometric method. The $pk_1s$ of $MA^+$ complexes are in the range of 8.80-6.72 and the $pk_2s$ of $MA_2^-$ complexes are in the range of 7.43-4.37. The magnitude sequences of the stability constants are the reverse of the ionic size of rare earth elements.

  • A concise synthesis of (${\pm}$)-rhinacanthin A is achieved in two steps by epoxidation of dehydro-$\alpha$-lapachone, followed by chemo- and regioselective reduction. Dehydro-$\alpha$-lapachone was also synthesized in two steps starting from 4-methoxy-1-naphthol by ethylenediamine diaetate (EDDA)-catalyzed benzopyran formation and a CAN-mediated oxidation reaction. $\beta$-Lapachone was synthesized in three steps from 4-methoxy-1-naphthol by benzopyran formation, catalytic hydrogenation, and Jones oxidation. As additional reactions, synthesis of pyranonaphthoquinone derivatives with the pyranokunthone B skeleton has been achieved in a single step from readily available 2-hydroxy-6-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-hydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone.

  • A new flexible $N_2O_2$-type tetradentate ligand, ethylene-diamine-N,N'-di-${\alpha}$-butyric acid (eddb), has been synthesized, and a series of cobalt (III) complexes of eddb, $[Co(edda)(L)]^{n+}$ (L = $Cl_2$, $(H_2O)_2$, $Cl\;H_2O$, and $Co^2_3$), have been prepared. Only s-cis isomers have been yielded during the preparation of complexes. Ring strain is cited as the primary cause for the preference for the s-cis geometric configuration.

  • Inorganic iron is essential for various metabolic processes, including RNA synthesis, electron transport, and oxygen detoxification in microorganisms. Many bacterial pathogens compete for iron acquisition in diverse environmental condition such as host. Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 also requires inorganic iron as a cofactor for growth. When a M9 minimal liquid medium was supplemented with ethylenediamine di-o-hydroxyphenylactic acid (EDDA) which acts as an iron-chelating agent, growth of Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 in the supplemented medium was completely arrested by deficient of useful iron under iron-depleted condition. However, a number of siderophores, which are small, high-affinity iron chelating compounds secreted by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, were produced for utilization of restricted iron under iron-depleted condition. A M9 minimal liquid medium complemented with human transferrin (hTf)-iron complex turned completely off production of siderophores, but growth of Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 maintained level similar to compare one complemented with iron (III) chloride (FeCl3). This means that human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron can utilize via directly interaction with Salmonella Typhimurium SL1344 without productions of siderophores. Through construction and analysis of negative mutant for utilization of human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron, we confirm that the bacterium can directly use human transferrin (hTf)-bound iron without extracellularly intermediated carriers such as siderophores.
