  • Germination properties, leachate electrical conductivity (EC), and inorganic compound leaching were analyzed to ascertain the storage ability and change of physiological characteristics during storage of Hippophae rhamnoides seeds. Seeds were placed in an incubator at 25℃ and sown in different soil media (sand, vermiculite and horticultural substrate) after being stored for 6, 18 and 30 months at 2℃. All germination properties decreased in accordance to an increase of the seed storage period. Compared with the seed storage for 18 months, germination percentage (GP), germination performance index (GPI), and germination value (GV) of seeds stored for 30 months decreased by more than 50%. When the seeds were sown in different soil media in a greenhouse, those germination properties were similar to the seeds germinated in an incubator, and mean germination time, GPI and GV had a significant difference except GP among soil media. EC and inorganic ion concentration had a strong positive correlation with the seed storage period, but the ratios of inorganic ions from stored seeds revealed that K+/Mg2+ and Na+/Mg2+ were inversely correlated with the storage period.

  • This study addresses the load capacity prediction of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns under axial compression using current design codes. Design methods given in the Chinese code CECS 28:2012 (2012), American code AISC 360-10 (2010) and EC4 (2004) are presented and described briefly. A wide range of experimental data of 353 CFST columns is used to evaluate the applicability of CECS 28:2012 in calculating the strength of circular CFST columns. AISC 360-10 and EC4 (2004) are also compared with the test results. The comparisons indicate that all three codes give conservative predictions for both short and long CFST columns. The effects of concrete strength, steel strength and diameter-to-thickness ratio on the accuracy of prediction according to CECS 28:2012 are discussed, which indicate a possibility of extending the limitations on the material strengths and diameter-to-thickness ratio to higher values. A revised equation for slenderness reduction factor in CECS 28:2012 is given.

  • A green tea used in this experiment was cultivated at Bosung (Chonnam) and purchased from a domestic market. The extract at 5$0^{\circ}C$ water from the powder of green tea partitioned with chloroform and ethyl acetate. The resulting solution was further purified with a chromatographic column (4.6$\times$250 mm, 15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, Lichrospher 100RP-18). Finally separation was achieved on a $\mu$-Bondapak $C_18$(3.9$\times$300mm, 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) column. The elution order of the catechin compounds contained in the green tea was EGC(Epigallocatechin, C(catechin), EC(Epicatechin), EGCG(Epigallocatechin Gallate) and ECG(Epicatechin Gallate). From the experimental results the mobile phase for isolating EGCG from the extract consisted of 0.1% acetic acid in water/acetonitrile, 87/13%(v/v). The flow rate of mobile phase was 1.0 $m\ell$/min, and UV wavelength was fixed at 280 nm. 121.3 mg of EGCG, higher than 98% of purity, was obtained from 5 g of dry green tea.

  • The active antifouling compounds coumarin and its derivatives were isolated from the cinnamon tree Cinnamomum loureiroi. The antifouling activities were determined using representative soft fouling organisms: the seaweed Ulvapertusa and diatom Navicula annexa. The chemical constituents with antifouling activities were identified as coumarin, hydroxylcoumarin, coumaric acid, and cinnamaldehyde by interpreting nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectroscopy data. These compounds were isolated from 1.09 g of crude Cinnamomum sp. methanol extract, yielding approximately 18.4, 6.3, 9.8, and 14.7 mg of coumarin, hydroxylcoumarin, coumaric acid, and cinnamaldehyde, respectively. The compounds inhibited U. pertusa zoospores with $EC_{50}$ values of $0.13-0.25{\mu}g/mL$, and the diatom N. annexa with $EC_{50}$ of $0.21-0.81{\mu}g/mL$.

  • This study was carried out to provide the basic information for the water quality management of the Sumjin River Basin. The Chooryeongchon stream watershed was selected and the parameters representing water quality were investigated from May 1999 to September 2002, periodically. Yearly mean runoff ratio to the rainfall amount of the watershed was analysed as $26.6{\sim}58.8%$. Temporal variation of water quality constituents such as water temperature, pH, EC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus were analysed. The result showed that pH ranged $5.7{\sim}7.7$, EC $54{\sim}167\;{\mu}S/cm$, COD $0.8{\sim}18.1\;mg/L$, respectively. Total-N and total-P concentration ranged from 0.89 to 5.19 mg/L and from 0.0004 to 0.030 mg/L, respectively. The relationships between runoff and mass load were derived and showed high linear relationships.

  • uftraspirocle (usa) gene product (Uspl is a member of the superfamilv of steroid hormone receptors in Drosophila melonogaster which mediate the hormone action by heteromerization with ecdvsone receptor (EcR). Based on the genetic and molecular characterization of usp, it has been proposed that Usp funtions in at least three significant developmental pathway: embrvogenesis, eve morphogenesis, and female reproduction. In this study, the expression patterns of Usp were investigated by immunohistochemistrv in individual tissues from diHernt developmental stases of Drosophila. Usp is localized in the nucleus with ubiquitous distribution throughout development. Usp expression is detected throughout embrvogenesis. Usp is expressed in imaginal and lanral tissues from late third instar 18nra. The expression pattern of Usp is overlapped by those of EcR. Also Usp is expressed in differentiating adult reproductive organs. This result suggests that Usp is not a transcriptional regulatory factor modulating hormonal response during development, but also play some roles in female and male reproduction of Drosophila.

  • It was attempted to observe the effect of garlic on the hepatic glutathione s-transferase and glutathione peroxidase activity in this study. Glutathione s-transferase (EC 2.5.1.18) are thought to play a physiological role in initiating the detoxication of potential alkylating agents, inclnding pharmacologically active compounds. Glutathione peroxidase (EC 1. 11. 1. 9) might play an important role in the protection of cellular structures against oxidative challenge. The activities of glutathione s-transferase and glutathione peroxidase in rat liver were increased by the treatment of garlic juice. Allicin fraction, heat-treated allicin fraction and garlic butanol fraction markedly inhibited glutathione s-transferase activity in vitro, whereas glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly increased in heat-treated allicin fraction and garlic butanol fraction.
