  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the context within which EAD was developed, to review the elements and the structure of EAD 1.0 version and to introduce EAD as new standard for encoded archival finding aids in Korea. Encoded Archival Description(EAD) has been developed in 1993 in order to facilitate exchange of ISAD(G) descriptive information. EAD is currently administered and maintained jointly by the Society of American Archivists and the United States Library of Congress. While development was initiated in the United Stares, international interest and contribution are increasing. EAD is a encoding standard designed specifically for marking up information contained in archival finding aids. From its inception, EAD was based on SGML, and, with the release of EAD version 1.0 in 1998, it is also compliant with XML in order to facilitate easier internet access to SGML-encoded finding aids. EAD is the first tool to preserve the multilevel and hierarchical description manifest in finding aids by providing structures in which to describe entire record collections and increasingly smaller subcomponents thereof such as series, subseries, folders, and even items. Archival institutions can form a EAD consortium and also create a union database of EAD finding aids for the geographically dispersed collections. The EAD DTD provides a flexible way for archives to convert finding aids that exist in paper form into electronic documents or to create new finding aids in electronic form.

  • Finding aids are descriptive tools for archival materials in order to physically and intellectually understand and control archival collections. For electronic finding aids, encoded archival description has been developed as part of the Online Archive of California project for direct and comprehensive access to a variety of archival materials across the California state. The purpose of this article are: to understand a brief history of EAD development; to examine EAD encoding, format conversion, structure, and representation used in OAC; and to necessarily suggest that a customized EAD model should be developed for Korean contexts.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest EAD mandatory elements to share finding aids among the Archival Institutions of Korea. Three foreign EAD best practices for case studies: the EAD Best Practice at the Library of Congress(2008), the RLG Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description(2002), and the OAC Best Practice Guidelines for Encoded Archival Description (2005) were analyzed. In addition, the Archival Description Rules(2008) as the data content standard of Korea and the descriptive elements which are were being used at Archival Institutions of Korea were analyzed. Based upon the results of comparisons among EAD elements, in-depth interviews were performed to investigate which EAD elements should be included in finding aids as a matter of exchange format. Based upon the literature review, case studies, and interviews, the rules and EAD elements for the archival institutions in Korea were designed and suggested.

  • The study designs and implements a KORMARC/EAD integrated system for the Myongji Digital Library Collections. The purpose of this paper is to design the metadata to Myongji Korean History Collections to provide digital information of high quality to clients, and to develop and implement a model for managing digital library collections. In order to test the model and the quality of the derived metadata, we built a metadata management system, which is connected to the existing KORMARC system. The system consists of two modules- a retrieval and an input module. While in the retrieve mode, one can retrieve KORMARC records of books and archival items, with links to modified EAD files for archival items or to image files for books, in the input mode, one can type two types of data such as a catalog data and an inventory data. Finally, we evaluated the proposed system via mail questionnaires, and propose three suggestions to make this system a much more comprehensive and effective system.

  • We propose a numerical scheme to simulate the time-domain echo signals at tracking radar for a realistic scenario where an EAD (expendable active decoy) and an airborne target are both in dynamic states. On various scenarios where the target takes different maneuvers, the trajectories of the EAD ejected from the target are accurately calculated by solving 6-DOF (Degree-of-Freedom) equations of the motion for the EAD. At each sampling time of the echo signal, the locations of the EAD and the target are assumed to be fixed. Thus, the echo power from the EAD can be simply calculated by using the Friis transmission formula. The returned power from the target can be computed based on the pre-calculated scattering matrix of the target. In this paper, an IPO (iterative physical optics) method is used to construct the scattering matrix database of the target. The sinc function-interpolation formulation (sampling theorem) is applied to compute the scattering at any incidence angle from the database. A simulator is developed based on the proposed scheme to estimate the echo signals, which can consider the movement of the airborne target and EAD, also the scattering of the target and the RF specifications of the EAD. For applications, we consider the detection probability of the target in the presence of the EAD based on Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Finding aids is the first necessary step for users to find records easily. EAD, computerized standardization for finding aids, enables users to access to the finding aids easily and accelerates interoperability between Archives. This research is to review the domestic and foreign archives where they have built EAD finding aids and to analyze the distinctive feature in the EAD finding aids. And to review and point out the problems in current status of finding aids in domestic university archives. And the solution for the problem is presented in this research.

  • This study aims to design and implement an integrated information retrieval system for the archives in Korea. Particularly, this study is focused on the improvement of the usability of the system. To achieve the goal, this study analyzed the current retrieval systems of national archives and presidential archives in Korea. A new integrated retrieval system, called KAIRS, is designed based on the EAD elements, which is implemented through emulation technic between two retrieval systems. KAIRS showed higher of user satisfaction compared to the existing two retrieval systems in their usability test.

  • The advent of new technologies and descriptive tools, including the Web, XML, and EAD, have highlighted the necessity of content standard which can integrate and manage to library materials and archives and accommodate various finding aids for information exchange. This research analyzes both APPM2 and DACS. The former is an old established description rule. On the other hand, the latter keeps step with ISAD(G) and ISAAR(CPF) as adopting the international trend of archives and is able to describe the data structure of a variety of finding aids including MARC, EAD, etc. As a result, it presents the points to take into consideration as making descriptive rules about our archives.

  • Human enteric Adenovirus-41 (HuEAdV-41) causes gastroenteritis, which detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) base diagnostic system for clinical, food, environmental, fish and shellfish samples. We developed improved PCR and nested PCR primer set which had high specificity, sensitivity and reduced times. In this study, we compared seventeen conditions reported in the previous study that was using the PCR based HuEAdV-41 detection system, and non-enteric Adenovirus were detected in nine conditions. The most sensitive detection condition was up to 25 copies however it took 184 minutes of PCR reaction time. In this study, the PCR primer set developed had same level of sensitivity, it reduced the time of detection for clinical, food and seafood samples to 112 minutes. Developed nested PCR primer set needed 112 minutes but detected up to approximately 1 copy. In addition, developed PCR and nested PCR primer set was validated with twenty samples of underground water at random, of which ten samples showed specific band without non-specific reaction. We expect this study will be used to diagnose HuEAdV-41 from various samples.

  • We propose a novel scheme to transmit high center frequency RF signals using electroabsorption devices (EADs) as frequency converters at the transmitter and the receiver. In this approach frequency heterodyning is employed for obtaining high center frequency. With the EAD as a detector/mixer at the receiver we demonstrated a smaller conversion loss than that of the conventional modulator/mixer. With EAD as a modulator/mixer at the transmitter and with two heterodyned lasers to generate an optical local oscillator (LO), we demonstrated a large reduction (${\sim}23dB$) in conversion loss, and the transmission is not limited by the optical saturation of the EAD. This transmission scheme has optical single-side-band transmission feature which greatly relieves the fiber dispersion effect.
