Antitumor effect of Careya arborea against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma with reference to lipid peroxidation and enzymatic and non enzymatic antioxidant system in Swiss albino mice

  • The methanol extract of stem barks of Careya arborea Roxb. (MECA) (Family- Myrtaceae) was evaluated for antitumor activity and antioxidant status against Ehrlich's Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) bearing Swiss albino mice. After 24 h of tumor inoculation the MECA was administered at the doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight/mice/day for 14 days. After the last dose and 18 h fasting mice were sacrificed. The effect of MECA on the growth of transplantable murine tumor, life span of EAC bearing hosts, hematological profiles, serum and liver biochemical parameters were estimated. The MECA showed significant (P < 0.01) decrease in ascites volume, packed cell volume and viable cell count and prolonged the life span of EAC tumor bearing mice. Hematological profiles reverted to more or less normal levels in extract treated mice. The MECA also produced protective effect by decreasing the activity of serum enzymes, bilirubin and increase the protein and uric acid levels. MECA significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation, while significantly (P < 0.05) increased the levels of glutathione content, vitamin C, vitamin E, superoxide dismutase and catalase CAT. The results indicate that MECA exhibited significant antitumor and antioxidant activity in EAC bearing mice.

  • Stable PZT coating sol was prepared using chelating agent, ethylacetoacetate(EAcAc) by sol-gel processing under ambient atmosphere. Through FT-IR spectrum analysis on solution of each reaction step, formation of metal complex was confirmed and prepared PZT sol was stable over several months. Through TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR spetrum analysis of PZT gel powder, it was understood that the addition of EAcAc could reduce the transition temperature to ferroelectric phase, due to the increased homogeneity by matching the hydrolysis and condensation rates by chelation. Single perovskite phase was obtained by the heat-treatment at 54$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The film was coated on ITO-coated glass substrate by dip coating method. After heat-treatment, PZT thin film had thickness in the range of 20~130 nm. The maximum dielectric constant of its thin film at room temperature and 1 kHz was 128.

  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMNC) of Korean native cattle rosetted with Korean goat erythrocytes(KGRBC) and blood monocytes were evaluated for four cytochemical reactions such as acid phosphatase(ACP), alkaline phosphatase-anti-boby(ALP-Ab), ${\alpha}$-naphthyl butyrate esterase(${\alpha}$-NBE) and peroxidase. The results obtained were as follows; In rosetted cells, the positivities of ACP in E AET-DeX, EA and EAC were 70.3%, 22.4% and 25.2%, those of ${\alpha}$-NB were 27.4%, 44.2% and 79.8%, and those of ALP-Ab were 9.5%, 88.3% and 91.5%, respectively. Whereas, the positivity for Peroxidase in monocytes was 100%. In non-rosetted (remained) cells, the positivities of ACP in E AET+DeX. EA and EAC were 41.4%, 57.2% and 61.9%, those of ${\alpha}$-NB were 38.6%, 16.5% and 18.9% and those of ALP-Ab were 98.2%, 5.3% and 6.3%, in order.

LEED-Healthcare 세부항목의 평균득점률을 통한 병원의 친환경성 분석 (Analysis of Sustainability of Hospital Based on Average Achieved Rate in LEED-HC Credits)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the research is to find difficulty levels of LEED credits in each LEED level based on credits achievement in order to find important of LEED-HC credits to gain LEED-HC. Methods: The individual credits of LEED-HC v.2009 scorecards from USGBC website are analyzed. With achieved scores rate of LEED credits per each Level, all credits are reassembled in 4 different ranges (A~D); easy (A), easy-moderate (B), moderate-hard (C) and hard (D) to achieve scores. Results: 1) Achieved point rate in LEED-HC specific credits are low. These credits need to be reviewed carefully. 2) In 88 projects, 37 projects are gained Silver level which is more than projects in certification level. In order to encourage to gain LEED-HC level, Average Achieved rate to earn Certificate level needs to be risen. 3) Credits in range D rarely affect to gain platinum level. EAc1 (24 points) are critical to gain Silver and Gold level. However, EAc1 points are not effective to achieve Certificate level. Implications: This research will provide a fundamental back data to set up Korean Green building rating system for Healthcare.

Bayesian model updating for the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of Ni-base alloy X-750

  • Nickel base Alloy X-750, which is used as fastener parts in light-water reactor (LWR), has experienced many failures by environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). In order to improve the reliability of passive components for nuclear power plants (NPP's), it is necessary to study the failure mechanism and to predict crack growth behavior by developing a probabilistic failure model. In this study, The Bayesian inference was employed to reduce the uncertainties contained in EAC modeling parameters that have been established from experiments with Alloy X-750. Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate model (FCGR) was developed by fitting into Paris' Law of measured data from the several fatigue tests conducted either in constant load or constant ΔK mode. These parameters characterizing the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of X-750 were successfully updated to reduce the uncertainty in the model by using the Bayesian inference method. It is demonstrated that probabilistic failure models for passive components can be developed by updating a laboratory model with field-inspection data, when crack growth rates (CGRs) are low and multiple inspections can be made prior to the component failure.

야간 조도에 따른 벼 품종별 출수 반응 (Varietal Difference in Heading Date of Rice by Night Illumination)

  • 최근 고속화 도로의 건설 등 산업의 발달로 인하여 야간조명이 급증되고 있는 상황하에서 야간 조도에 따른 벼 생태형 및 품종별 출수 반응을 검토하고자 극조생종, 조생종, 중생종 및 중만생종의 품종을 각각 3품종씩 12품종을 선별하여 1.0-70.0 lux(0.005-0.196W $\textrm{m}^{-2}$, 0.11-0.98 $\mu\textrm{mol}^{-2}\textrm{s}^{-1}$)의 광도에서 수행한 시험결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 야간조명에 의한 벼의 출수반응은 야간 조도가 높을 경우 출수기와 수전기가 지연되었으며, 지연 정도는 중만생종 >중생종 >조생종 >극조생종의 순이었고, 특히 중생종인 광안벼와 중만생종인 일품벼는 출수까지 일수가 현저하게 지연되었으나, 중생종인 안산벼는 조생종과 유사하여 수량에도 영향이 적을 것으로 판단되었다. 생태형에 따른 야간 조도 1 lux당 출수지연 일수는 극조생종은 0.09-0.10일, 조생종은 0.14-0.26일, 중생종은 0.16-0.58일, 중만생종은 0.35-0.54일이 지연되었다. 품종에 따른 야간 조도 1 lux당 출수지연 일수는 조생종 중에서 대진벼(0.14일), 중생종 중에서는 안산벼(0.16일), 중만생종 중에서는 대안벼(0.35일)가 가장 짧았으며, 일품벼(0.54일)와 광안벼(0.58일)는 현저하게 지연일수가 길어 광에 민감하므로 수량에도 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 사료되었다. 생태형별 수전일수는 야간 조도 2 lux 이하에 비하여 50-70 lux에서는 극조생종은 0-1일, 조생종은 -1-1일, 중생종은 0-l6일, 중만생종은 6-18일 연장되었다. 품종별 수전일수는 야간 조도 2 lux 이하에 비하여 50-70 lux 에서는 극조생종의 모든 품종과 조생종의 그루벼와 대진벼 및 중생종의 안산벼는 0-2일 연장되었으며, 조생종의 대진벼는 1일이 단축되었고, 화성벼, 대안벼 및 추청벼는 6-9일 연장되었으며, 광안벼 및 일품벼는 16-18일 연장되었다.

  • In order to assess the susceptibility of the environmentally assisted cracking(EAC) on SA508 Cl.3 steel in primary water condition, potential step test and slow strain rate test(SSRT) were conducted in a simulated crack tip condition. In this test, anodic dissolution was dominant in the crack tip environments. Proposed simple dissolution model is a modification of Hishida's anodic dissolution model at the plastic zone. One can predict actual crack growth rate with the smooth specimen through this model.

  • Design factors such as design objects establishment, analysis, synthesis, production, test and evaluation should be educated in a systematic way. Also design ability to reflect practical restrictive conditions such as industrial standards, economic feasibility, environmental impact, aesthetics, safety and reliability, ethical impacts and social impacts should be cultivated. In this paper, we explain the meaning of these terms and propose a systematic engineering design education framework satisfying Korean engineering education accreditation criteria. We also present a simple implementation in information network engineering.

  • This paper presents the design of a new sliding mode controller to improve the rate of convergence by Lyapunov's stability analysis. The proposed controller shows that the elimination of the steady state position errors can be achieved by replacing the desired trajectory by the virtual reference trajectory. The proposed control scheme which consists of the upper bounded and estimated values of eac term of the manipulator dynamic equation does not require good knowledge of the parameters and the computation of matrix inversion. The performance of proposed controller is evaluated by the simulation for a two-link manipulator.

  • The plant Bryonia laciniosa (Family: Cucurbitaceae) has been indicated for the treatment of various diseases one among which is cancer. The purpose of this study was investigating experimentally the possible anti-tumor effect and antioxidant role of Bryonia laciniosa leaves in animal model. The methanol extract of Bryonia laciniosa (MEBL) administered at the doses of 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/kg in mice for 14 days after 24 h of tumor inoculation. The effect of MEBL on the growth of transplantable murine tumor, life span of EAC bearing mice, hematological profile and liver biochemical parameters (lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes) were estimated. Treatment with MEBL decreased the tumor volume and viable cell count thereby increasing the life span of EAC bearing mice and brought back the hematological parameter more or less normal level. The effect of MEBL also decreases the levels of lipid peroxidation and increased the levels of glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The present work indicates that the methanol extract of Bryonia laciniosa exhibited significant antitumor and antioxidant activity in vivo.
