  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the instant effect of Kinesio taping on pain decrease and improvement of functional disorder of the subjects who have lumbar instability. Methods : A total of 20 patients (13 men and 7 women) who have lumbar instability were chosen as the subjects. The experiment was conducted by assigning the subjects into Kinesio taping group and placebo taping group. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to measure back pain and Biering-Sorensen test was applied to measure the muscle endurance of back extensor muscles. A digital dynamometer was used to test the isomeric contraction strength of lumbar extensor muscle. The subject performed single-leg stance and double-leg stance task and their static balancing ability was measured by a testing device that captures the static balancing ability. Results : In a within-group comparison, Kinesio taping group showed a significant decrease of VAS (p<.05) and a significant increase of endurance and strength of lumbar extensor muscle (p<.05). In Kinesio taping group, the shift distance in anterior-posterior sway and medial-lateral sway during the double-leg stance significantly decrease (p<.05). The shift distance in anterior-posterior sway and medial-lateral sway also significantly decreased during the single-leg stance (p<.05). Placebo taping group showed a significant decrease of visual analog scale (p<.05). In a between-group comparison, Kinesio taping group showed a significantly larger decrease of VAS (p<.05), significant larger increase of muscle endurance and muscle strength (p<.05), and significant larger decrease of anterior-posterior sway in the double-leg stance (p<.05), compared to placebo taping group. Conclusion : Application of Kinesio taping to the subjects with lumbar instability produced positive effect of reducing pain, increasing muscle strength and endurance, and improving static balancing ability.

  • Although driving patterns strongly influence greenhouse gas and air pollutant emission rate from light duty vehicles, emission measurements have been mainly based on chassis dynamometer testing with one standard driving pattern. And there has been limited work on quantifying the independent effect of driving parameters on emission rate because of multidimensional nature of real-world driving pattern. The objective of this study is to obtain the quantitative effect of relative positive acceleration (RPA) on vehicle emission rate. RPA has been used to define the occurrence of acceleration demanding large amounts of power in certain driving distance and shown to be a significant affecting parameter for real-world emission rate. 40 driving patterns have been developed with fixed driving parameters to investigate independent effect of RPA. For the same values of average vehicle speed and power, the trend in carbon dioxide emission rate and fuel consumption with respect to RPA is very clear. Emission rate of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter also increase with respect to RPA, but the trend is less clear. Carbon dioxide emission from diesel vehicle appear to be more affected by high accelerations compared to that from gasoline vehicle because of high intake air restriction during acceleration caused by turbocharger and intercooler. The results have implications for the possible reduction of environmental effects through better traffic planning and management, driver education and car design.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the maximal grip strength for the combinations of resting time and trial and to provide guideline of resting time for the maximum gripping task associated with the number of trials. Background: Despite many previous researches for the maximal grip strength, few studies have considered the effect of both trials and rest time on the maximum grip strength. Methods: A total of thirty subjects participated in the study. The average of maximum grip strength was measured using JAMAR hydraulic hand dynamometer. The testing position was same as the position recommended by the American Society of Hand Therapists. The between-subject experimental design has been conducted in this study. Trials(1~20 trials) and rest time(2, 3, and 4min) were considered as independent variables, and the maximum grip strength was considered as dependent variable, respectively, in this study. Results: According to the result of the number of trials, the maximal grip strength decreased gradually as the number of trials increased. The ANOVA result showed that the main effect was significant for both resting time(p<.0001) and trial(p<.0001), and the interaction was significant(p<0.0086). Conclusions: The maximal grip strength decreased gradually as the number of trials increased. Thus, basic guideline of resting time was suggested for the number of trials of maximal grip strength tests in this study.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of engine oil aging on PM(Particulate Matter), exhaust gases, and DPF. It is widely known that the specification of a lubricant and its consumption in an ICE considerably influences the release of regulated harmful emissions under normal engine operating conditions. Considering DPF clogging phenomena associated with lubricant-derived soot/ash components, a simulated aging mode is designed for DPF to facilitate engine dynamometer testing. A PM/ash accumulation cycle is developed by considering real-world engine operating conditions for the increment of engine oil consumption and natural DPF regeneration for ash accumulation. The test duration for DPF aging is approximately 300 h with high- and low-SAPs engine oils. Detailed engine lubricant properties of new and aged oils are analyzed to evaluate the effect of engine oil degradation on vehicle mileage. Furthermore, physical and chemical analyses are performed using X-CT, ICP, and TGA/DSC to quantify the engine oil contribution on the PM composition. This is achieved by sampling with various filters using specially designed PM sampling equipment. Using high SAPs engine oil causes more PM/ash accumulation compared with low SAPs engine oils and this could accelerate fouling of the EGR in the engine, which results in an increase in harmful exhaust gas emissions. These test results on engine lubricants under operating conditions will assist in the establishment of regulated and unregulated toxic emissions policies and lubricant quality standards.

  • The main purpose of this research is for the investigation on the impact of engine oil aging on PM and DPF. It is widely known that lubricant specifications and consumption from an ICE have significantly influenced on the regulated and unregulated harmful emissions as the engine operating conditions. Considering DPF clogging phenomena with lubricant-derived soot/ash components, simulated aging mode for the DPF was newly designed for engine dynamometer testing. PM/ash accumulation cycle were developed in reflecting real-world engine operating conditions for the increment of engine oil consumption and natural DPF regeneration for the ash accumulation. The test duration for DPF aging reached around 100hrs with high- and low-SAPS engine oils, respectively. Using high SAPs engine oil made more PM/ash accumulation compared with low SAPs engine oils and it could accelerate fouling of EGR in engine. Fouling of EGR made effects on more harmful exhaust gases emissions. The test results on engine lubricant under engines operating conditions will deliver for the establishment of regulated and unregulated toxic emissions policy, lubricant quality standard.

  • Automotive exhaust is suspected to be one of the major reasons of the rapid increase in greenhouse effect gases in ambient air. As the concerns regarding global worming were increased, the pressure on mobile source greenhouse gas (GHG) emission were also increased. Carbon Dioxides contribute over 90% of total GHG emission and the mobile source occupies about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission. In this study, in order to investigate $CO_2$ emission characteristics from gasoline and LPG passenger cars (PC), which is the most dominant vehicle type in Korea, 53 vehicles were tested on the chassis dynamometer. $CO_2$ emissions and fuel consumption efficiency were measured. The emission characteristics by fuel type, model year, mileage, vehicle speed and transmission type were also discussed. Test modes used in this study were NIER 10 modes and CVS-75 mode, which have been used for developing emission factors and testing new vehicles respectively. The results of this study showed that the main factors which have significant influences on the $CO_2$ emissions are fuel type, transmission type, displacement of vehicle and mileage. The correlation between $CO_2$ emission and FE was also determined by comparing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption efficiency. The overall results of this study will greatly contribute to domestic greenhouse gas emissions calculation and designing national strategies for climate change.

  • Now, safety assurance in construction sites should be accomplished by its own organization rather than control of the code or government. It is believed that the safety assurance can be considerably improved by a lecture or an education using the existing theories or literatures up to now, but it is thought that fundamental safety assurance we not able to be accomplished without developing safety devices '||'&'||' equipment or taking fundamental measures, based on the result analyzed from workers behaviors. There are various behaviors of the workers showed in construction site, but only tests for hammerusing works such as form, re-bar, stone workers directly related to the grip strength are mainly performed, investigated and measured here for the study. The above works are similar to power grip, 7th picture on seven items which are categorized for hand grip types(Ammermin 1956 ; Jones ; Kobrick 1958). Measurements of grip strength are commonly taken in anthropometric surveys. They are easy to administer but unfortunately it is rather dubious whether they yield any data that are of interest to the engineer. Very fewer controls of tools are grasped and squeesed studies showed very little overall correlation between grip strength and other measures of bodily strength (Laubach, Kromer, and Thordsen 1972), but hammer-using work which is practically progressed in construction site are mainly influenced with grip strength. According to the investigation on work measurement, it is shown that 77% of form worker are using hammer to be related to grip strength. In this study, it is particularly noticed that wearing safety gloves in construction site is required for workers safety but 20% difference between grip strength with safety gloves and without ones are commonly neglected in the site(Fig. 1). Nevertheless, safety operation with consideration of the above 20% difference is not considered in the construction site. Factors of age, kinds of work, working time, with or without safety gloves are in vestigated '||'&'||' collected at the sites for this study. Test, not at each working hour but at 14 : 00 when the almost all of the workers think the most tired, resulting from the questionaires, also when it is shown on the research report has been performed and compared for main kinds of works : form '||'&'||' re-bar work. Tests were performed with both left SE rightand of the workers simultaneously in construction site using Rand Dynamometer(Model 78010, Lafayette Instrument Co., Indiana, U.S.A) by reading grip strength on the gauge while they are pulling, and then by interviewing on their ages, works, experiences and etc., directly. The above tests have been performed for the dates of 15th march-26th May '95 with consideration of site condition. And even if various factors of ambient temperature on the testing date, working condition, individual worker's habit and worker's condition of the previous ate are concerned with the study. Those are considered as constants in this study. Samples are formwork 53, rebar 62, electrician 5, plumber 4, welding 1 from D construction Co., Ltd, ; formwork 12, re-bar 5, electrician 2, from S construction Co., Ltd, , formwork 78, re-bar 18, plumber 31, electrician 13, labor 48, plumber 31, plasterer 15, concrete placer 6, water proof worker 3, maisony 5 from B construction Co., Ltd. As In the previously mentioned, main aspect to be investigated in this study will be from '||'&'||' re-bar work because grip strength will be directly applied to these two kinds of works ; form '||'&'||' re-bar work, eventhough there are total 405 samples taken. It is thought that a frequency of accident occurrence will be mainly two work postures "looking up '||'&'||' looking down" to be mainly sorted, but this factor is not clarified in this study because It will be needed a lot of work more. Tests has been done at possible large scale of horizontally work-extended sites within one hour in order to prevent or decrease errors '||'&'||' discrepancies from time lag of the test. Additionally, the statistical package computer program SPSS PC+has been used for the study.
