Air interlacing serves to protect the yarn against damage, strengthens inter-filament compactness or cohesion, and ensures fabric consistency. The air interlacing nozzle is used to introduce intermittent nips to a filament yarn so as to improve its performance in textile processing. The effect of various interlacing nozzle geometries on the interlacing process was studied. The geometries of interlacing nozzles with single or multiple air inlets located across the width of yarn channels are investigated. The basis case is the yarn channel, with a perpendicular main air inlet in the middle. Other cases have main air inlets, slightly inclined double sub air inlets, The yarn channel cross sectional shapes are either semicircular or rectangular shapes. The compressed impinging jet from the main air inlet hole hits the opposing bottom wall of the yarn channel, is divided into two branches, joins with the compressed air coming out from sub air inlet at the bottom and creates two free jets at both ends of the yarn channel. The compressed air movement in the cross-section consists of two opposing directional vortices. The CFD-FASTRAN flow parallel solver was used to perform steady simulations of impinging jet flow inside of the interlace nozzles. The vortical structure and the flow pattern such as pressure contour, particle traces, velocity vector plots inside of interlace nozzle geometry are discussed in this pater.

Offshore oscillating water columns (OWC) represent one of the most promising forms of wave energy converters. The hydrodynamic performance of such converters heavily depends on their interactions with ocean waves; therefore, understanding these interactions is essential. In this paper, a fully nonlinear 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on RANS equations and VOF surface capturing scheme is implemented to carry out wave energy balance analyses for an offshore OWC. The numerical model is well validated against published physical measurements including; chamber differential air pressure, chamber water level oscillation and vertical velocity, overall wave energy extraction efficiency, reflected and transmitted waves, velocity and vorticity fields (PIV measurements). Following the successful validation work, an extensive campaign of numerical tests is performed to quantify the relevance of three design parameters, namely incoming wavelength, wave height and turbine damping to the device hydrodynamic performance and wave energy conversion process. All of the three investigated parameters show important effects on the wave-pneumatic energy conversion chain. In addition, the flow field around the chamber's front wall indicates areas of energy losses by stronger vortices generation than the rear wall.
We analyzed the low wall-shear stress area in the intracranial aneurysm that occurred at an anterior communicating artery with a special emphasis on vortical structures close to the wall. We reconstructed the aneurysm model from patient CTA data. We assumed blood as an incompressible Newtonian fluid and treated the blood vessel as a solid wall. The pulsatile boundary condition was applied at the inlet of the anterior cerebral artery. From the instantaneous flow field, we computed the histogram of the wall-shear stress over the aneurysm wall and found the low wall-shear stress event (< 0.4 Pa). This extreme event was due to the low wall-shear stress area that occurred at the daughter sac. We found that the merging of two vortices induced the low wall-shear stress area; one arises from the morphological characteristics of the daughter sac, and the other is formed by a jet flow into the aneurysm sac. The latter approaches the daughter sac, which ultimately leads to the strong ejection event near the daughter sac.
In thIns paper, a numerical simulation of steady laminar and turbulent flow in a two dimensional model for the total artificial heart is'presented. A trlleaflet polyurethane valve was simulated at the outflow orifice while the Inflow orifice had a trileaflet or a flap valve. The finite analytic numerical method was employed to obtain solutions to the governing equations in the Cartesian coordinates. The closure for turbulence model was achieved by employing the k-$\varepsilon$-E model. The SIMPLER algo rithm was used to solve the problem in primitive variables. The numerical solutions of the slulated model show that regions of relative stasis and trapped vortices were smaller within the ventricular chamber with the flap valve at the Inflow orifice than that with the trileaflet valve. The predicted Reynolds stresses distal to the inflow valve within the ventricular chamber were also found to be smaller wlth the flap valve than with the trlleaflet valve. These resu1ts also suggest a correlation be- tween high turbulent stresses and the presence of thrombus In the vicinity of the valves in the total artificial hearts. The computed velocity vectors and trubulent stresses were comparable with previ ously reported in vitro measurements in artificial heart chambers. Analysis of the numerical solo talons suggests that geometries similar to the flap valve(or a tilting disc valve) results in a better flow dynamics within the total artificial heart chamber compared to a trileaflet valve.
Tornadoes are the most devastating meteorological natural hazards. Many empirical and theoretical numerical models of tornado vortex have been proposed, because it is difficult to carry out direct measurements of tornado velocity components. However, most of existing numerical models fail to explain the physical structure of tornado vortices. The present paper proposes a new empirical numerical model for a tornado vortex, and its load effects on a low-rise and a tall building are calculated and compared with those for existing numerical models. The velocity components of the proposed model show clear variations with radius and height, showing good agreement with the results of field measurements, wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics. Normal stresses in the columns of a low-rise building obtained from the proposed model show intermediate values when compared with those obtained from existing numerical models. Local forces on a tall building show clear variation with height and the largest local forces show similar values to most existing numerical models. Local forces increase with increasing turbulence intensity and are found to depend mainly on reference velocity Uref and moving velocity Umov. However, they collapse to one curve for the same normalized velocity Uref / Umov. The effects of reference radius and reference height are found to be small. Resultant fluctuating force of generalized forces obtained from the modified Rankine model is considered to be larger than those obtained from the proposed model. Fluctuating force increases as the integral length scale increases for the modified Rankine model, while they remain almost constant regardless of the integral length scale for the proposed model.

Oscillating foil propulsion, the engineering application of fish-like movement of a hydrofoil, has received in recent decades as a possible competitor for propellers. The oscillating foil produces an effective angle of attack, resulting in a normal force vector with thrust and lift components, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. We have explored propulsion hydrodynamics as a concept in wake flow pattern. The present study has been examined various conditions such as oscillating frequencies and amplitudes in NACA0010 profile. Flow visualizations showed that high thrust was associated with the generation of moderately strong vortices, which subsequently combine with trailing-edge vorticity leading to the formation of a reverse $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street. Vortex generation was inherent to jet production and playeda fundamental role in the wake dynamics. And it was shown that the strong thrust coefficient obtained as the Strouhal number was larger.

Although the motion of the three-phase contact line on a solid substrate has been extensively studied thus far, the understanding of the dynamics of the contact line of liquid/liquid/gas phases is far from complete. Here we deposit a drop of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on water and HFE-7100 whose free surfaces are exposed to air to observe the flow field around the contact line. By combining the shadowgraph and high-speed imaging techniques, we find that vortices are spontaneously generated at the contact line, which grow in size with time. The flow is attributed to the Marangoni stress that pulls a liquid of lower-surface tension toward a liquid surface having a higher surface tension. However, it is not still clear why the entrained lower-surface-tension liquid should whirl rapidly beneath the contact line. We also visualize the flow by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) to find out that the rotational velocity reaches the order of 1 mm/s near the free surface.
An optimal shape design approach is presented for a subsonic S-shaped intake using aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. Two-equation turbulence model is employed to capture strong counter vortices in the S-shaped duct more precisely. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method For code validation, the result of the flow solver is compared with experiment data and other computational results of bench marking test. To study the influence oj turbulence models and grid refinement on the duct flow analysis, the results from several turbulence models are compared with one another and the minimum number of grid points, which can yield an accurate solution is investigated The adjoint variable code is validated by comparing the complex step derivative results. To realize a sufficient and flexible design space, NURBS equations are introduced as a geometric representation and a new grid modification technique, Least Square NURBS Grid Approximation is applied With the verified flow solver, the sensitivity analysis code and the geometric modification technique, the optimization of S-shaped intake is carried out and the enhancement of overall intake performance is achieved The designed S-shaped duct is tested in several off-design conditions to confirm the robustness of the current design approach. As a result, the capability and the efficiency of the present design tools are successfully demonstrated in three-dimensional highly turbulent internal flow design and off-design conditions.
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) dataset of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a step change from smooth to rough surface is analyzed to examine spatially developing flow characteristics. The roughness elements are periodically arranged two-dimensional (2-D) spanwise rods with a streamwise pitch of ${\lambda}=8k$ ($=12{\theta}_{in}$), and the roughness height is $k=15{\theta}_{in}$, where ${\theta}_{in}$ is the inlet momentum thickness. The step change is introduced $80{\theta}_{in}$ downstream from the inlet. For the first time, full images from the DNS data with the step change from the smooth to rough walls is present to get some idea of the geometry of turbulent coherent structures over rough wall, especially focusing on their existence and partial dynamics over the rough wall. The results show predominance of hairpin vortices over the rough wall and their spanwise scale growth mechanism by merging.

This paper addresses the technology of active flow control for stabilizing a flow field. In order for flow field modeling from the control point of view, the huge-data set from CFD(computational fluid dynamics) are reduced by using a POD(Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) method. And then the flow field is expressed with dynamic equation by low-order modelling approach based on the time and frequency domain analysis. A neural network flow estimator from the pressure information measured on the surface is designed for the estimation of the flow state in the space. The closed-loop system is constructed with feedback flow controller for stabilizing the vortices on the flow field.
