The aluminum 7075-T6 is known as an alloy widely used in aircraft structural applications, which does not exhibit strain rate sensitivity during dynamic compressive tests. Despite mechanical importance of the material, there is not enough attention to determine appropriate sample dimensions such as a sample diameter relative to the device bar diameter and sample length to diameter (L/D) ratio for dynamic tests and how these two parameters can change mechanical behaviors of the sample under dynamic loading condition. In this study, various samples which have different diameters of 31.8, 25.4, 15.9, and 9.5 mm and sample L/D ratios of 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 were tested using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB), as this testing device is proper to characterize mechanical behaviors of solid materials at high strain rates. The mechanical behavior of this alloy was examined under ${\sim}200-5,500s^{-1}$ dynamic strain rate. Aluminum samples of 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 of L/D ratios were well fitted into the stress-strain curve, Madison and Green's diagram, regardless of the sample diameters. Also, the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratio samples having the diameter of 31.8 and 25.4 mm followed the stress-strain curve. As results, larger samples (31.8 and 25.4 mm) in diameters followed the stress-strain curve regardless of the L/D ratios, whereas the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratios of small diameter sample (15.9 and 9.5 mm) did not follow the stress-strain diagram but significantly deviate from the diagram. Our results indicate that the L/D ratio is important determinant in stress-strain responses under the SHPB test when the sample diameter is small relative to the test bar diameter (31.8 mm), but when sample diameter is close to the bar diameter, L/D ratio does not significantly affect the stress-strain responses. This suggests that the areal mismatch (non-contact area of the testing bar) between the sample and the bar can misrepresent mechanical behaviors of the aluminum 7075-T6 at the dynamic loading condition.

There are many problems in the prediction of dynamic behaviors of saturated soils because undrained excess pore water pressure builds up and then the strain softening behavior is occurred simultaneously. A few analytical constitutive models based on the effective stress concept have been proposed but most models hardly predict the excess pore water pressure and strain softening behaviors correctly In this study, the disturbed state concept (DSC) model proposed by Dr, Desai was modified to predict the saturated soil behaviors under the dynamic loads. Also, back-prediction program was developed for verification of modified DSC model. Cyclic triaxial tests were carried out to determine DSC parameters and test result was compared with the result of back-prediction. Through this research, it is proved that the proposed model based on the modified disturbed state concept can predict the realistic soil dynamic characteristics such as stress degradation and strain softening behavior according to dynamic process of excess pore water pressure.

The mechanical properties of Al 6061 excluded bar were deformed in high temperature with the variable deformation conditions and characterized by the tensile test. Three types of different strain rate were experimentally performed by using hydraulic press, crank press and hammer and two types of the nominal strain 0.5 and 0.8 were achieved. To decide optimum forging process, the relationship among the strain rate, strain and mechanical properties was explained by analyzing the microstructures of the forged and heat heated parts. The strength was deeply related with the strain rate due to the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) in hot forging, and the best forging condition was presented in Al 6061 alloy.
In this study, a forging steel alloyed with both Nb and V was used as experimental material and the hot deformation behavior has been studied for this steel by conducting the compressive deformation test at temperature of $900-1150^{\circ}C$ and strain rate of $0.01-0.01s^{-1}$ in a MMS-300 thermo-mechanical simulator. The microstructure evolution, particularly the dynamically recrystallized microstructure, of the experimental steel at elevated temperatures, strain rates and strain levels, was characterized by optical microstructural observation and the constitutive equation in association with the activation energy and Zener-Hollomon parameter. The curves of strain hardening rate versus stress were used to determine the critical strain and peak strain, and their relation was connected with Zener-Hollomon parameter. Under the conditions of processing temperature $900^{\circ}C$ and strain rate $0.01s^{-1}$, the dynamic recrystallization took place and the austenite grain size was refined from $164.5{\mu}m$ to $28.9{\mu}m$.
The high temperature deformation behavior of Al 5083 alloy has been studied in the temperature range of 350 to 520 ${\circ}C$ and strain rate range of 0.2 to 3.0/sec by torsion test. The strain rate sensitivity(m) of the material was evaluated and used for estabilishing power dissipation maps following the dynamic material model. These maps show the variation of efficiency of power dissipation(${\eta}$=2m/(2m+1)) with temperature and strain rate. Hot restoration of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) was analyzed from the flow curve, deformed microstructure, and processing maps during hot deformation. Also, the effect of deformation strain on the efficiency of power dissipation of the alloy was analysed using the processing maps. Moreover relationship between the hot-ductility and efficiency of power dissipation of the alloy depending on thmperature and strain rate was studied using the Zener-Hollomon parameter(Z=${\varepsilon}$exp(Q/RT) It is found that the maximum efficiency of power dissipation for DRX in Al 5083 alloy is about 74.6 pct at the strain of 0.2. The strain rate and temperature at which the efficiency peak occurred in the DRX domain is found to be ∼0.1/sec and ∼450${\circ}C$ respectively.

The high strain-rate dynamic plastic behavior of Fe-X%Mn alloys was investigated. The strain rate did not have an effect when tested under quasi-static strain rates($2{\times}10^{-3}/sec$ and $2{\times}10^{-1}/sec$). However, the true stress increased at all strain levels when the strain rate increased to $6{\times}10^3/sec$. Based on the experimental results, an constitution equation to calculate the dynamic strength for strain rates over $10^4/sec$ was determined. The Fe-5%Mn alloy containing athermal ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite initially did not show work hardening. The work hardening increased with Mn content showing a maximum at 20% Mn. The high work hardening of Fe-20%Mn and Fe-30%Mn alloys appears to be closely related not only to the initial amounts of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite but to the strain induced transformation (${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ and ${\varepsilon}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}^{\prime}$) occurring during each stages of deformation.

The characteristics of metal matrix composite under dynamic tension at high strain rates up to the order of $10^3/sec$ is studied by using newly developed apparatus. The composite material processed in this research is aluminum-alumina metal matrix composites, arid fabricated by compocasting with the fiber volume fraction from 5 to 20%. The whisker and matrix material used in this paper were ${\delta}-Al_2O_3$ and Al-6061, respectively. The mechanical tests performed in this research are low and high strain rate tensile test. At low strain-rate tensile test, the modulus of elasticity and the ultimate tensile strength of the composites were improved about 77 pct. and 55 pct., respectively comparing with the unreinforced materials. At strain-rate from $10^{-3}\;to\;10^3/s$, the effect of strain-rate on the modulus, ultimate strength, flow stress is determined. Also the effect of strain rate on the modulus, ultimate tensile strength, flow stress and elongation to failures were investigated.
The behavior of metallic materials at high strain rates shows different characteristics from those in quasi-static deformation. Therefore, the strain rate should be considered when simulating crash events. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the dynamic tensile characteristics of SPRC440 as a function of the volume fraction of phases. As-received SPRC440 is composed of ferrite and pearlite phases. However, ferrite and martensite phases were observed after heat treatment at $730^{\circ}C$ and $780^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes, as expected by calculations based on the curves from dilatometry tests. High cross-head speed tensile tests were performed to acquire strain-stress curves at various strain rates ranging from 0.001 to $300\;s^{-1}$, which are typical in real vehicle crashes. It was observed that the flow stress increases with the strain rate and this trend was more pronounced in the as-received specimens consisting of ferrite and pearlite phases. It is speculated that the dislocation density in each phase has an influence on the strain rate sensitivity.
To investigate the dynamic strain aging (DSA) behavior of Alloy 617, high-temperature tensile tests were carried out with strain rates variations of $10^{-3}/s$, $10^{-4}/s$, and $10^{-5}/s$ from $24^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$. Five flow relationships, Hollomon, Ludwik, Swift, Ludwigson, and Voce, were applied to describe the tensile true stress-strain curves, and the DSA region was defined. In describing the tensile curves, Ludwigson's equation was superior to the other equations, and the DSA region was adequately defined by this equation as plateaus at intermediate temperatures from $200^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. It was identified that Alloy 617 is dominated by three types of serrations, known as Types D, A+B, and C. The activation energy values for each serration type were obtained by the Arrhenius equation. By using the obtained activation energy values, the serrated yielding map and the DSA mechanism were drawn and manifested. In addition, the relationship between the tensile strength and strain rate at higher temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$ was found to be closely related to the amounts of slip lines. In the scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractographs, there was a significant difference at the low, intermediate, and high temperatures, but almost the same to the three strain rates.

Nonlinear dynamic behavior of diffusive-thermal instability in diluted CH$_4$/O$_2$ diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry and transport. Counterflow diffusion flame is adopted as a model flamelet. Particular attention is focused on the pulsating-instability regime, which arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity, and the instability occurs at high strain rate near extinction condition in this flame configuration. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame depends on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely non-oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction. The peculiar oscillatory solution, which has been found in the previous study adopting one-step chemistry and constant Lewis numbers, is net observed in this study, which is attributed to both convective flow and preferential diffusion effects.
