Dynamic seals are one of the critical components of Absorber Rod Drive Mechanism of Fast Breeder Reactors, requiring separate experimental development. Their significance can't be overemphasized considering that the availability and re-usability of Control Rod Drive Mechanisms of Fast Breeder Test Reactor is governed by the failure rate of dynamic seals (bellows). For prototype and subsequent Fast Breeder Reactors in India, choice of the dynamic seal is changed to an in-house designed & developed labyrinth type V-ring seal. The present work is related to the numerical investigations carried out to gain insights into the sealing mechanism and the thermal behaviour of these seals. The results indicate that the seal geometry is very important for obtaining optimum performance. By changing the geometry of the present seal, performance enhancement by more than 50% in important indices is obtained. Further, the results point out that caution shall be exercised when the seal material & its operating temperature are changed. Also, the numerical model developed in this study will be useful for developing more robust dynamic seals in future.

Rotor dynamic response of pumps is greatly influenced by the nature of the hydraulic forces arising from wearing seal, balance drum and impeller, etc.. Therefore, rotor dynamic analysis should be conducted during the design stage in order to aleviate some of the vibrational problems which might occur during the operational life of pumps. Previsousely, the authors have proposed the method to obtain the dynamic seal coefficients of the annular plain seal, convergent and divergent tapered seals, parallel grooved seal, spiral grooved seal and annular stepped seal. On the basis of these results, this paper presents the investigated effect of seals on the stability behavior of a centrifugal pump. The results show the effects of seal geometry, pressure difference, clearance, length/diameter ratio, on stability behavior.

A mechanical face seal is a tribe-element intended to control the leakage of working fluid at the interface of a rotating shaft and its housing. The leakage of working fluid decreases as the seal surfaces get closer each other. But a very small seal clearance results in a drastic reduction of seal life because of high wear and heat generation. Therefore, in the design of mechanical face seals the compromise between low leakage and acceptable life is important and presents a difficult design problem. And the gap geometry of seal clearance affects seal performance very much and becomes an important design variable. In this study the Reynolds equation for the sealing dam of mechanical face seals is numerically analyzed using the Galerkin Finite Element Method, which can be readily applied to various seal geometries. The film pressures of the sealing dam are analyzed, including the effects of the seal face coning and tilt. Then, opening forces, restoring moments, leakages, and dynamic coefficients are calculated.
This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamic response of an elastomeric oil seal when the interferences between shaft and lip as well as the dynamic eccentricities are present. The dynamic response of seal lip in oil seals was observed with the aid of an image processing apparatus. The temperature of the seal lip edge, friction torque and the dynamic sealing gap between shaft and lip are measured at different conditions of the initial interference and the shaft eccentricity, The data were simultaneously measured under dynamic conditions. Experimental results show that, as the shaft speed is increased, S/e$_{d}$ has nearly reached a constant asymptotic value fur a certain range of shaft speeds. The results indicate that the gap separation between shaft and lip is provided due to the shaft eccentricity because the seal lip cannot follow quickly the radial displacements with increasing shaft speed.d.
This study proposes a procedure for designing a labyrinth seal that meets both leakage flow rate and rotordynamic performance criteria (effective damping, amplification factor, separation margin, logarithmic decrement, and vibration amplitude). The seal is modeled using a one control volume (1CV) bulk flow approach to predict the leakage flow rate and rotordynamic coefficients. The rotating shaft is modeled with the finite element (FE) method and is assumed to be supported by two linearized bearings. Geometry, material and operating conditions of the rotating shaft, and the supporting characteristics of the bearings were fixed. A single labyrinth seal is placed at the center of the rotor, and the linearized dynamic coefficients predicted by the seal numerical model are inserted as linear springs and dampers at the seal position. Seal designs that satisfy both leakage and rotordynamic performance are searched by modifying five seal design parameters using the multi-grid method. The five design parameters include pre-swirl ratio, number of teeth, tooth pitch, tooth height and tooth tip width. In total, 12500 seal models are examined and the optimal seal design is selected. Finally, normalization was performed to select the optimal labyrinth seal designs that satisfy the system performance requirements.

The floating ring seal is often used in the turbopump (TP) unit of liquid rocket engine (LRE) owing to its inherent ability of minimizing the leakage flow and superior dynamic characteristics as well. This paper describes the test results concerned with the lock-up and dynamic characteristics of the floating ring seals in the turbopump. The characteristics of the floating ring seals were extracted from the frequency response function (FRF) by instrumental variable method. The experiment was tested at 7.0MPa and 0-24,800 rpm. And the test results were introduced about the dynamic characteristics of floating ring seal related with the eccentricity and attitude angle.

To investigate the seal dynamic instability for a misaligned and coned mechanical face seal, the finite difference approximation was employed to solve the modified Reynolds equation for an incompressible fluid and temperature dependent viscosity. Using the solution, the results for axial force, transverse moment, restoring moment, and ratio of the transverse moment and the restoring moment are calculated for the whole range from zero to full angular misalignment. The results indicate that the transverse moment due to the angular misalignment and coning terms affects considerably the dynamic instability of face seals. It is shown that the simplified treatment of Reynolds equation using the narrow seal approximation overestimate the ratio of the transverse moment to the restoring moment especially at touch.

As related to rotordynamics, dynamic characteristics of the wear ring seal in high pressure multi-stage pump is calculated in the cases of labyrinth, damper and helically grooved types. The. results show that the labyrinth seal type has superior performance in the view point of leakage. However, in terms of rotordynamics view point, the damper seal type gains acceptable separate margin in critical speed range, while it has slightly inferior leakage performance compared to labyrinth seal type.
Oil seals will experience a small amplitude dynamic excitation due to the shaft eccentricity as well as out-of-roundness of the shaft. The direct integration method is selected to analyze the time domain response of the seal lip-shaft contact. The physical properties of rubber seal materials are experimentally analyzed. Effects of both frequency and temperature on the material stiffness behavior are investigated for the linear viscoelastic materials of the seal. Using the nonlinear transient model, a finite element analysis of the lip-shaft contact behaviors under dynamic conditions is presented as a function of the shaft eccentricity, the shaft interference and the garter spring stiffness. The FEM results based on the experimental data indicate that the increased rotating speed may produce the separation conditions. These results will be very useful in predicting the leakage of oil seals under dynamic conditions.

This article describes the calculation procedure for the dynamic characteristics of a high-pressure labyrinth seal wherein the friction force and rotor whirling force are considered; SFCP, the commercial code developed by Lee and two colleagues, is used in the procedure. The simulation results were reviewed in comparison to those of the experiments provided by Benckert; additionally, the SFCP simulation results were verified using the CFD analysis presented by Toshio Hirano. This calculation procedure may therefore be applied to the dynamic characteristics of the labyrinth seals of high-pressure turbo machinery.
