  • In this study, several Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) analyses were performed using the developed FE-BE coupling method and the seismic response behavior of the structure's systems was determined. For the verification of the fundamental solution which is used in this analysis method, a dynamic analysis of the homogeneous ground was performed and it was compared to the results of Estorff et al. In order to verify the seismic response analysis, the results are compared with those of another commercial code. Several kindd of SSI analyses were performed and the seismic response associated with the rile foundation, seismic waves and a consideration of the ground nonlinearity were determined. As a result, it was found that the pile foundations didn't greatly helpful during the seismic event.

  • In order to fulfill the needs of reliable and economically feasible foundation, engineers should consider not only the working load that can endure extreme conditions but also apprehending precise behavior of continuous dynamic load while designing the foundation of offshore wind power generators. To actualize the foundation, a model pile was made in miniature. Also, calibration chamber was made and a 500mm height of sand-bed was made to perform "static lateral load experiment" and "repetitive loading experiment", total of two Lateral load tests. As a result, in Static Lateral load test, the bigger length/diameter of model pile led an increase in load displacement. However, when performing "Cyclic Lateral load test", the increase in number of under loading led the decrease in horizontal displacement from each repeated lateral load. While performing Static Lateral load test and repeated loading experiment, we could observe the decreasing in the rate of ultimate lateral load capacity increase of the pile. Also, it turned out that the higher relative density of the ground, the lower ultimate lateral load capacity by repeated horizontal loading.

  • In this study, it was analyzed the cases of bored PHC piles designed for the building foundations. The overall length of the piles varies within a maximum of 35 m. However, the average length was 17.0 to 18.9 m depending on the kind of the bedrock, with no significant difference. The socket length entered into the bedrock was designed with approximately 58% of the whole piles being 1m, the minimum length of the specification, and up to 5m. Although the range in design efficiency was very large, on average it was about 70%, consistent with the usual known extent. Applications with low design efficiency were mainly shown on the foundation of low-rise buildings or rides with low design load. On the weathered rock, the design load, which governs the design result was widely distributed at 65 to 97% of allowable bearing capacity of ground. The ratio of allowable axial load of piles to allowable bearing capacity of ground is also widely distributed between 36 and 115%, so optimization efforts are required along with design efficiency. On the other hand, the allowable bearing capacity on the soft or hard rock was highly equal, mostly within 90% of the allowable axial load of piles. In the design, the end bearing resistance averaged over 75% of the allowable bearing capacity. However, the results of the dynamic pile load test show that the end bearing resistance was predominant under the E.O.I.D conditions, and in some cases, the end bearing resistance was at least 25% under the restrike conditions.

  • When enforced earth is used for the retain wall and four walls, the most important thing would be how to maximize the land utilization. Accordingly, in case of enforced earth, we pile up the minimal height of earth ($20{\sim}50\;cm$) and harden the earth using a static dynamic hardening machine. In this paper, we tried to analyze and compare the stress transformation characteristics of reinforced weathered granite soil with geosynthetics when repetitive load is added to the enforced earth structure and when static load is added. The result is that the cohesion component of the strength increased greatly and the friction component decreased slightly.

  • In the case of small observation towers located at sea, it is necessary to confirm the change in dynamic characteristics due to the influence of environmental loads. In this study, the dynamic characteristics were analyzed and the numerical analysis model was designed through field dynamic response measurement on the Mangyeong Offshore Observation Tower (Mangyeong Tower) located near the Saemangeum Embankment. As a result of the measurement, the natural frequency was found to increase slowly as the tide level is lowered. In addition, it was confirmed that the same mode has two frequencies, which was judged to be a phenomenon in which the natural frequency was partially increased when the pile and the ground contacted by scouring. For numerical analysis, the upper mass, artificial fixity point, scour depth and fluid influences are reflected in the structural characteristics of the Mangyeong Tower. In addition, the model updating from the estimated natural frequency and pattern search algorithm was performed. From the model updating, it is expected that it can be applied to future studies on stability of Mangyeong Tower.

  • Micropile is used to improve the stability of existing structures as well as solve various geotechnical problems, such as suppressing slope activity and shearing keys of retaining walls. The existing micropile method has a significantly less capacity to resist a horizontal force than a vertical force0355 Therefore, it is necessary to develop and study an umbrella-type micropile method with excellent seismic performance that can secure seismic performance economically while minimizing structures and ground disturbance areas in the limited space of existing structures. In this study, numerical analysis was performed on the umbrella-type micropile, in which the sloped pile and vertical pile were combined, and the horizontal behavior in soft clay ground during earthquakes was analyzed. Numerical analysis showed that umbrella-type micropile suppresses horizontal displacement in soft ground, and the effect of reducing the horizontal displacement was more pronounced when the embedded depth of the slope pile was 15 m or more. The embedded depth of the micropile and horizontal displacement suppression effect was proportional. Therefore, the umbrella-type micropile has an excellent effect of suppressing horizontal displacement during earthquakes on soft clay ground.

  • Offshore platforms in seismically active areas must be designed to survive in the face of intense earthquakes without a global structural collapse. This paper scrutinizes the seismic performance of a newly designed and established jacket type offshore platform situated in the entrance of the Gulf of Suez region based on the API-RP2A normalized response spectra during seismic events. A nonlinear finite element model of a typical jacket type offshore platform is constructed taking into consideration the effect of structure-soil-interaction. Soil properties at the site were manipulated to generate the pile lateral soil properties in the form of load deflection curves, based on API-RP2A recommendations. Dynamic characteristics of the offshore platform, the response function, output power spectral density and transfer functions for different elements of the platform are discussed. The joints deflection and acceleration responses demands are presented. It is generally concluded that consideration of the interaction between structure, piles and soil leads to higher deflections and less stresses in platform elements due to soil elasticity, nonlinearity, and damping and leads to a more realistic platform design. The earthquake-based analysis for offshore platform structure is essential for the safe design and operation of offshore platforms.

  • When a new fuel is developed, various mechanical properties are absolutely necessary for a safety analysis of the fuel for the licensing and prediction of its mechanical behavior during operation and accident conditions. In this paper, a mechanically equivalent surrogate plate of U-Mo dispersion fuel is presented using tungsten, substitute material of U-Mo particle. A surrogate plate, composed of tungsten/aluminum dispersion meat and aluminum alloy cladding, is manufactured with the same fabrication process with that of fuel plate except that a tungsten powder is used instead of U-Mo powder. A modal test showed that the surrogate plate and fuel plate have similar dynamic characteristics, and a tensile test demonstrated the similarity of the material property up to the yield strength range. The conducted tests proved that the surrogate tungsten plate has equivalent mechanical behaviors with that of a fuel plate, which leads to the acceptable use of a surrogate fuel assembly using tungsten/aluminum dispersion meat in various mechanical tests. The surrogate fuel assembly can be utilized for various out-of-pile characteristic tests, which are necessary for the licensing achievement of a research reactor that uses U-Mo dispersion fuel as a driver.

  • In addition to the measurement of the concentration of soil contaminants, the new idea of indicative parameters was proposed to validate the remedial works through the monitoring for the changes of soil characteristics after applying the clean up technologies. The parameters like CFU (colony forming unit), pH and soil texture were recommended as indicative parameters for land farming. In case of soil washing, water content and the particle size distribution of the sludge were recommended as indicative parameters. The sludge is produced through the particle separation process in soil washing and it is usually treated as a waste. The parameters like water content, organic matter content, CEC (cation exchange capacity) and CFU were recommended as indicative parameters for the low temperature thermal desorption method. Besides the indicative parameter, sampling methods in stock pile and the optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample were proposed. The rates of sampling error in regular grid, zigzag, four bearing, random grid methods were 17.3%, 17.6%, 17.2% and 16.5% respectively. The random grid method showed the minimum sampling error among the 4 kinds of sampling methods although the differences in sampling errors were very little. Therefore the random grid method was recommended as an appropriate sampling method in stock pile. It was not possible to propose a value of optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample based on the real analytical data due to the dynamic variation of $CV_{fund{\cdot}error}$. Instead of this, 355 g of soil was recommended for the optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample under the assumption of ISO 10381-8.

  • This paper presents a seismic reliability analysis method for an offshore wind turbine with a twisted tripod support structure under earthquake loading. A three dimensional dynamic finite element model is proposed to consider the nonlinearity of the ground-pile interactions and the geometrical characteristics of the twisted tripod support structure where out-of-plane displacement occurs even under in-plane lateral loadings. For the evaluation of seismic reliability, the failure probability was calculated for the maximum horizontal displacement of the pile head, which is calculated from time history analysis using artificial earthquakes for the design return periods. The application of the subset simulation method using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) sampling is proposed for efficient reliability analysis considering the limit state equation evaluation by the nonlinear time history analysis. The proposed method can be applied to the reliability evaluation and design criteria development of the offshore wind turbine with twisted tripod support structure in which two dimensional models and static analysis can not produce accurate results.
