  • Quantitative estimation of seismic response of various structural systems at the collapse limit state is one of the most significant objectives in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE). Assessing the effects of uncertainties, due to variability in ground motion characteristics and random nature of earthquakes, on nonlinear structural response is a pivotal issue regarding collapse safety prediction. Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) and fragility curves are utilized to estimate demand parameters and seismic performance levels of structures. Since producing these curves based on a large number of nonlinear dynamic analyses would be time-consuming, selection of appropriate earthquake ground motion records resulting in reliable responses with sufficient accuracy seems to be quite essential. The aim of this research study is to propose a methodology to assess the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frames at collapse limit state via accurate estimation of seismic fragility curves for different Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) by using a limited number of ground motion records. Research results demonstrate that accurate estimating of structural collapse capacity is feasible through applying the proposed method offering an appropriate suite of limited ground motion records.

  • An improved fuzzy Kalman filtering speed estimation scheme was proposed by means of measuring stator side voltage and current value based on vector control state equation of induction motor. The designed fuzzy adaptive controller conducted recursive online correction of measurement noise covariance matrix by monitoring the ratio of theory residuals and actual residuals to make it approach real noise level gradually, allowing the filter to perform optimal estimation to improve estimation accuracy of EKF. Meanwhile, co-simulation scheme based on MATLAB and Ansoft was proposed in order to improve simulation accuracy. Field-circuit coupling problems of induction motor under the action of vector control were solved and the parameter optimization accuracy was improved dramatically. The simulation and experimental results show that this algorithm has a strong ability to inhibit the random measurement noise. It is able to estimate motor speed accurately, and has superior static and dynamic characteristics.

  • Various Pushover analysis methodologies have evolved as an easy as well as designers-friendly alternative of nonlinear dynamic analysis for estimation of the inelastic demands of structures under seismic loading for performance based design. In fact, the established nonlinear dynamic analysis to assess the same, demands considerable analytical and computational background and rigor as well as intuitive insight into inelastic behavior for judging suitability of the results and its interpretation and hence may not be used in design office for frequent practice. In this context, the simple and viable alternative of Pushover analysis methodologies can be accepted if its efficacy is thoroughly judged over all possible varieties of the problems. Though this burning issue has invited some research efforts in this direction, still a complete picture evolving very clear guidelines for use of these alternate methodologies require much more detailed studies, providing idea about how the accuracy is influenced due to various combinations of basic parameters regulating inelastic dynamic response of the structures. The limited study presented in the paper aims to achieve this end to the extent possible. The study intends to identify the range of applicability of the technique and compares the efficacy of various alternative Pushover analysis schemes to general class of problems. Thus, the paper may prove useful in judicial use of Pushover analysis methodologies for performance based design with reasonable accuracy and relative ease.

  • This paper proposes a data fusion algorithm of nonlinear multi sensor dynamic systems of synchronous sampling based on filtering step by step. Firstly, the object state variable at the next time index can be predicted by the previous global information with the systems, then the predicted estimation can be updated in turn by use of the extended Kalman filter when all of the observations aiming at the target state variable arrive. Finally a fusion estimation of the object state variable is obtained based on the system global information. Synchronously, we formulate the new algorithm and compare its performances with those of the traditional nonlinear centralized and distributed data fusion algorithms by the indexes that include the computational complexity, data communicational burden, time delay and estimation accuracy, etc.. These compared results indicate that the performance from the new algorithm is superior to the performances from the two traditional nonlinear data fusion algorithms.

  • Motion can be estimated continuously from each sensor through the analysis of the instantaneous states of an object. This paper is aimed to introduce a method to estimate the general 3D motion of a planar object from the instantaneous states of an object using multi-sensor data fusion. The instantaneous states of an object is estimated using the linear feedback estimation algorithm. The motion estimated from each sensor is fused to provide more accurate and reliable information about the motion of an unknown planar object. We present a fusion algorithm which combines averaging and deciding. With the assumption that the motion is smooth, the approach can handle the data sequences from multiple sensors with different sampling times. Simulation results show proposed algorithm is advantageous in terms of accuracy, speed, and versatility.

  • In this paper, fine attitude estimation using low-cost sensors for attitude pointing missions of spacecraft is addressed. Attitude kinematics and gyro models including bias models are in general utilized to estimate spacecraft attitude and angular rate. However, a linearized model and a transition matrix are derived in this paper from nonlinear spacecraft dynamics with external disturbances. A Kalman filtering technique is applied and offers relatively high estimation accuracy under dynamic uncertainties. The proposed approach is demonstrated using numerical simulations.

  • Wean modal parameter estiimation technique by developing a residual based system reconstruction and using the system matrix coordinate transformation. The modal parameters can be estimated from and residues of the system transfer functions expressed in modal coordinate basis, derived from the state space system matrices. However, for modal parameter estimation of mllltivariable and order structural systems over broad frequency bands, this non-iterative algorithm gives high accuracy in the natural fre and damping ratios. From vibration tests on cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates, the natural frequencies and damping ratios can be estimated using the coordinates of the structural system reconstructed from the experimental frequency response. These results are compared with those of finite element analysis and single-degree-of-freedom curve-fitting..

  • In this study, we propose an effective strategy for precise orbital and geodetic parameter estimation using SLR (Satellite Laser Ranging) observations for ILRS AAC (Associate Analysis Center). The NASA/GSFC GEODYN II software and SLR normal point observations of LAGEOS-1, LAGEOS-2, ETALON-1, and ETALON-2 are utilized for precise orbital and geodetic parameter estimation. Weekly-based precise orbit determination strategy is applied to process SLR observations, and Precise Orbit Ephemeris (POE), TRF (Terrestrial Reference Frame), and EOPs (Earth Orientation Parameters) are obtained as products of ILRS AAC. For improved estimation results, selection strategies of dynamic and measurement models are experimently figured out and configurations of various estimation parameters are also carefully chosen. The results of orbit accuracy assessment of POE and precision analysis of TRF/EOPs for each case are compared with those of existing results. Finally, we find an appropriate strategy for precise orbital and geodetic parameter estimation using SLR observations for ILRS AAC.

  • Dynamic strain history curve measured in the field is influenced by various factors such as vehicle type, speed, noise, temperature and running location etc.. Because such curve is used for vehicle weight estimation methodology suggested by Moses, exact strain history curve is the most important thing for exact estimation of vehicle weight. In this paper, effect of such factors mentioned above is investigated on the measured strain history curves, and results of weight estimation of vehicles are discussed quantitatively. From this study, it was known that temperature effect contained in the strain history curve measured for long time in-site gives the biggest effect on result of weight estimation and it can be removed by using the mode value. Furthermore, gross vehicle weight can be estimated within 5% error corresponding to A class of the European classification if effects of temperature and noise are removed and vehicle properties such as speed, axle arrangement and running location are considered properly.
