  • It is of often important to accurately predict the flow-induced vibration or dynamic instability of a pipeline conveying internal high speed flow in advance, which requires a very accurate solution method. In this study, first the dynamic equations for the axial and transverse vibrations of a pipeline are reduced from a set of pipe-dynamic equations derived in the previous study and then the spectral element model is formulated. The accuracy of the spectral element method (SEM) is then verified by comparing its results with the results obtained by finite element method (FEM). It is shown that the present spectral element model provides very accurate solutions by using an extremely small number of degrees-of-freedom when compared with FEM. The dynamics of a sample pipeline is investigated with varying the axial tension and the speed of internal flow.

  • A numerical method is presented for the dynamic analysis of military tracked vehicles of high mobility. To compute the impulsive dynamic contact forces which occur when a vehicle passes on a ground obstacle, the track is modeled as the combination of elastic links interconected by pin joints. The mass of each track link, the elastic elongation of a track link between pin joints by the track tension, and the elastic spring effects on the upper and lower surfaces of each track link have been considered in the equations of motion. And the chassis, torsion bar arms, and road wheels of the vehicle are modeled as the rigid multi bodies connected with kinematic constraints. The contact positions and the contact forces between the road wheels and track, and the ground and the the track are simultaneously computed with the solution of the equations of motions of the vehicle consisting of the multibodies. The iterative scheme for the solution of the multi body dynamics of the tracked vehicle is presented and the numerical simulations are conducted.

  • Air entrainment can become a significant problem in a web handling process. The development of air film between a web and an idle roller can cause a reduction of traction and traction coefficient, by which a slip is occurrred. Computational and experimental study was carried out to describe the slippage of an idle roller for given operating conditions, tension and web velocity. An extended mathematical model to find out a slip condition was developed by using the models of air film height, dynamic traction coefficient, and torque balance of a rotational roller. And by using the extended model, a mechanism to define the slippage between the roller and the moving web was suggested. The results of simulation and experiment showed that the extended dynamic model could properly characterize the rotational motion of the idle roller by considering dynamic traction coefficient. By examining the rotational motion of the idle roller with web dynamics(speed), the mechanism to define al slip condition between the roller and the web was found to be effective.

  • Braiding machines of maypole type have complex guide tracks. It is not easy to speed up drivers while carriers are moving with being at high speed. This paper presents a new design approach using dynamic analysis for moving carriers on the guide tracks. The proposed approach will be shown to be effective by using the simulation tool, WORKING MODEL 2D(equation omitted), for the high speed drivers on new models of braiding machines of maypole type.

  • Dynamic behaviors of the GMAW system are simulated using the short-circuit transfer model and the characteristic equations fir the power supply, wire system and arc. The conventional wire equation, which relates the rate change of the wire extension to the wire feed rate and melting rate, is modified to include effects of the molten drop attached at the wire tip. The modified wire equation describes behaviors of the GMAW system more precisely and provides information about the initial bridge volume for short-circuit transfer. The proposed short-circuit model predicts the variation of parameters such as the current, voltage, short-circuit frequency and time considering the effects of the surface tension and electromagnetic force due to current. The calculated results are in broad agreements with the experimental results under the argon shielding condition.

  • The dynamic earthquake analysis of plane cable-stayed bridge structures was formulated and implemented into a computer program which analyzes plane cable-stayed bridge structu- res subjected to initial cable tensions, member dead and live loads and seismic loads. Cable-stayed bridges were modelled as multi-degrees of freedom systems with lumped- mass. Various earthquake responses such as dynamic deflection, bending moment, shear force and cable tension were investigated by the dynamic analyses in the form of the time history analysis. The time history analysis was based on the mode superposition method. The study revealed that Fan-l type cable-syayed bridges is generally superior to other types for the earthquake proof even though aspects of deflection and section force of each type presents respective advantages and disadvantages. The study provided a method to design the sections of cable-stayed bridges under seismic loads with various design parameters related to structural types. The study is expected to be useful for effective design of cable-stayed bridges with conside- ration of earthquake.

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics of catenary that supplies electrical power to high-speed trains is investigated. A particular emphasis is placed on the effect of droppers on the dynamic response of the contact wire, a dropper is an element that connects the contact wire with the messenger wire so as to maintain near uniform compliance, Finite element model compressing 3 spans is constructed. For the linear model, droppers are modeled as linear springs with various stiffness values. Modal analysis is performed to obtain the natural frequencies and modes and the variation in the modal density distribution for changing stiffness values are noted. Impulse response is also obtained through computer simulation. In practice, dropper is a nonlinear element with low stiffness in compression and high stiffness in tension. Hence, dropper can be modeled as a nonlinear spring with hi-directional stiffness values. Impulse and harmonic responses are obtained for the nonlinear model through simulation. The responses aye also compared with the linear cases.

  • In this study, the program which determine the initial cable tension force by tile initial shape analysis for cable stayed bridge is developed. Also, DSFEMP(Dynamic Stochastic Finite Element Analysis Program) is developed to consider the variance of random variables at each step of dynamic response analysis, not use existing methods that apply to the theory of reliability at the final step of structural analysis. In addition, the output from the developed program was compared with the results from DMCSP(Direct Monte Carlo Simulation Program) to prove its validity.

  • The explicit nonlinear dynamic relaxation method (DRM) is applied to the nonlinear geodesic shape finding analysis by introducing fictional tensioned 'strings' along the desired seams with a three or four-node membrane element. A number of results from the numerical example for the nonlinear geodesic shape finding and patterning analysis are obtained by the proposed method to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the developed method. Therefore, the proposed geodesic shape finding algorithm may improve the applicability of a four-node membrane element to membrane structural engineering and design analysis simultaneously for the shape finding, stress, and patterning analysis.

  • This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a beam axially moving over multiple elastic supports. The spectral element matrix is derived first for the axially moving beam element and then it is used to formulate the spectral element matrix for the moving beam element with an interim elastic support. The moving speed dependance of the eigenvalues is numerically investigated by varying the applied axial tension and the stiffness of the elastic supports. Numerical results show that the fundamental eigenvalue vanishes first at the critical moving speed to generate the static instability.
