  • In this paper, dynamic track tension fur high mobility tracked vehicle is investigated by multibody dynamic simulation techniques. This research focuses on a heavy military tracked vehicle which has sophisticated suspension and rubber bushed rack systems. In order to obtain accurate dynamic track tension of track subsystems, each track link is modeled as a body which has six degrees of freedom. A compliant bushing element is used to connect track links. Various virtual proving ground models are developed to observe dynamic changes of the track tension. Numerical studies of the dynamic track tension are validated against the experimental measurements. The effects of pre-tensions, traction forces, fuming resistances, sprocket torques, ground profiles, and vehicle speeds, for dynamic responses of track tensions are explored, respectively.

  • The dynamic surface tension of GL12 (easily biodegradable nonionic surfactant and mild to skin), LAS and SLES aqueous solutions and that of mixed surfactant systems were measured by the maximum bubble pressure method at different mixing ratios. The effects of various salt such as NaCl, CsCl and urea on the dynamic surface tension of mixed surfactant systems were also studied. The dynamic surface tension of GL12 was not influenced by the presence of salts. On the contrary, the dynamic surface tensions of anionic surfactants (LAS and SLES) were significantly affected by the salts. In the mixed surfactant systems, the effect of salt increased as the composition of anionic LAS or SLES increased in the GL12/LAS and GL12/SLES mixtures.

  • The purposes of the study are to formulate a mathematical model of mechanical tension arm system including supply reel and capstan system, and to simulate dynamic reponse according to parameter variations of the componests in tension arm system. Experiments were carried out in order to prove the validity of the mathematical model. From the results of simulations and experiments, dynamic responses of tape tension and displacement of tension post were analyzed during entire playing mode and they showed the basic characteristics of the tension arm system.

  • The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between tracks and soil, so that the characteristics of their interactions are quite important fur the tracked vehicle study. In particular, the track tension is closely related to the maneuverability of tracked vehicles and the durability of tracks and suspension systems. In order to minimize the excessive load on the tracks and to prevent the peal-off of tracks from the road-wheels, the Dynamic Track Tensioning System (DTTS) which maintains the optimum track tension throughout the maneuver is required. It consists of track tension monitoring system, track tension controller and hydraulic system. In this paper, a dynamic track tensioning system is developed for tracked vehicles which are subject to various maneuvering tasks. The track tension is estimated based on the idler assembly model. Using the monitored track tension and con sidering the highly nonlinear hydraulic units, fuzzy logic controllers are designed in order to control the track tension. The track tensioning performance of the proposed DTTS is verified through the simulation of the Multi -body Dynamics tool.

  • Considering dynamic behaviors according to initial tension forces, geometric nonlinearity and the effect of higher eigen modes to participate in dynamic behaviors increase as initial tension forces decrease, and from phase portrait we can realize that period attractors are produced in many area with complexity. If initial tension forxes increase, difference between linear and nonlinear solutions will decrease and the first eigen mode dominate the dynamic behaviors and observing phase portrait, period attractors appear in certain area regularly. These results may offer meaningful informations to nonlinear dynamic analysis using modal reduction methods such as Lanczos modal analysis. And actually nonlinear dynamic analysis needs very large computational efforts. So, if we determine the number of eigen modes to take part in modal analysis corresponding to initial tension forces we will get more accurate data close to exact nonlinear dynamic solutions.

  • Cable supported structures have been widely used in civil engineering. Cable tension estimation has great importance in cable supported structures' analysis, ranging from design to construction and from inspection to maintenance. Even though the Bernoulli-Euler beam element is commonly used in the traditional finite element method for calculation of frequency and cable tension estimation, many elements must be meshed to achieve accurate results, leading to expensive computation. To improve the accuracy and efficiency, a dynamic finite element method for estimation of cable tension is proposed. In this method, following the dynamic stiffness matrix method, frequency-dependent shape functions are adopted to derive the stiffness and mass matrices of an exact beam element that can be used for natural frequency calculation and cable tension estimation. An iterative algorithm is used for the exact beam element to determine both the exact natural frequencies and the cable tension. Illustrative examples show that, compared with the cable tension estimation method using the conventional beam element, the proposed method has a distinct advantage regarding the accuracy and the computational time.

  • The problem of tension control in metal-strip processing line is discussed. A new mathematical dynamic model which relates tension change, motor-speed change and roll-gap change is developed. Through the computer simulation of this model, parameter sensitivity, the tension transfer phenominon, and static and dynamic characteristics of strip tension were studied. Guidelines are developed to help one selecting locations of the master-speed drive in multi-drive speed control for tension adjustment and reducing the effect of interaction between tension and roll gap control.

  • The effects on the dynamic behaviour of the geometric nonlinearity and large dynamic tensile forces occurring in hostile sea environments must be investigated for assessing extreme tensions and fatigue life expectancy of cable. In this paper, the combined effects on the cable dynamic responses are shown through comparisons between numerical solutions to the cable dynamic equations with geometric nonlinearity and large tensile force terms as well as nonlinear drag term and those to the cable equations with only nonlinear drag term. It is found that, in steady state, the cambined effects increase the maximum dynamic tension and reduce the magnitude of the minimum of the dynamic tension at the middle of the cable. This decrease together with the increase of the maximum dynamic tension, cause the average tension to become higher and, therefore, it may deteriorate the cable fatigue life.

  • This paper designs a looper-tension controller for mass-flow stabilization in hot strip finishing mills. By Newton's 2nd law and Hooke's law, nonlinear dynamic equations on the looper-tension system are firstly derived, and linearized by a linearization algorithm using a Taylor's series expansion. Moreover, a tension calculation model is obtained from the nonlinear dynamic equations which is called as a soft sensor of strip tension between two neighboring stands. Next, a looper-tension servo controller is designed by an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) algorithm, and it is combined with a minimal disturbance observer which to attenuate speed disturbances by AGC and operator interventions, etc.. Finally, it is shown from by a computer simulation that the proposed ILQ controller with a disturbance observer is very effective in stabilizing the strip mass-flow under some disturbances, moreover it has a good command following performance.
