  • A nuclear spent fuel shipping cask is required by IAEA and domestic regulations to withstand a 9m free drop condition. In this paper, the structural analysis under the 9m side drop condition was performed to understand the dynamic impact behavior and to evaluate the safety of the cask for 7 PWR nuclear spent fuel assemblies. The analysis result was compared with the measured value of the 9m side drop test for the 1/3 scaled-down model and the accuracy of the 3D analysis was confirmed. Analysis in accordance with the diameter of impact limiters for the proto-type cask were performed. Through the analysis, the impact behaviors due to the side drop and the effects dependent on the diameter of impact limiters were grasped. Maximum stress intensities on each part of the cask were respectively calculated by using the stress evaluation program and the structural safety of the cask was finally evaluated in accordance with the regulations.

  • When the important structures or components of agricultural machinery are designed, the full-filed methods of stress analysis can provide enough information in order to obtain lighter weight and prevent failure. The photoelasticity has been applicated to solve many practical engineering problems. The coating method provides full-field information, enabling the engineers to determine the complete distribution of surface strains and directly highlighting severely strained areas, especially for the welded frames of agricultural machinery. A combined method of model and prototype for strain analysis of excavator has been successfully applied to improve design. A measuring and recording system controlled by micro-computer and application software for dynamic event was studied. It can be widely used in structural failure analysis under cyclical loading . Typical application concerned stress field of crack tip and failure analysis of some mechanical structures are introduced are in roduced briefly in this paper.

  • The present study focuses on the effect of geometrical discontinuity, strength mismatch, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, and loading rate on the ductile crack initiation using two-parameter criterion. Fracture initiation testing has been conducted under static and dynamic loading using circumferentially notched round-bar specimens. In order to evaluate the stress/strain state in the specimens, especially under dynamic loading, a thermal elastic-plastic dynamic finite element (FE) analysis considering the temperature rise due to plastic deformation has been carried out.

  • The effect of dead loads on dynamic responses of uniform elastic beams is examined by means of a governing equation which takes into account initial bending stress due to dead loads. First, the governing equation of beams which includes the effect of dead loads is briefly presented from the author's paper (Takabatake 1990). In the formulation the effect of dead loads is considered by strain energy produced by conservative initial stresses produced by the dead loads. Second, the effect of dead loads on dynamical responses produced by live loads in simply supported beams and clamped beams is confirmed by the results of numerical computations with the Galerkin method and Wilson-${\theta}$ method. It is shown that the dynamical responses, like dynamic deflections and bending moments produced by dynamic live loads, are decreased in a heavyweight beam when the effect of dead loads is included. Third, an approximate solution for dynamic deflections including the effect of dead loads is presented in closed-form. The proposed solution shows good in agreement with results of numerical computations with the Galerkin method and Wilson-${\theta}$ method. Finally, a method reflecting the effect of dead loads for dynamic responses of beams on the magnitude of live loads is presented by an example.

  • This paper studies on the dynamic properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. After forming the four different micro structures(equiaxed, lamellar, and 2 bimodals) through heat treatments, static and dynamic properties of each structure were investigated quantitatively. Dynamic behaviors of the alloy are observed by the compressive split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) tests. In additon, parameters of Johnson-Cook equation were determined from the SHPB test results. In order to verify the suitability of the parameters, high velocity impact tests were performed and the results were compared with the numerical analysis results. Although the flow stress and the fracture strain of the bimodal structures were higher than those of the equiaxed structure at the static tests, the superior dynamic properties were observed at the equiaxed structure due to the effects of higher maximum flow stress and fracture strain. From the numerical analysis, J-C parameters which are determined on this study describe well the dynamic behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Experimental and analysis results are consistent with ${\pm}5%$ of an average error.

  • Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold gas dynamic spray is conducted by powder sprayed by supersonic gas jet, and generally called the kinetic spray or cold-spray. Cold-spray was developed in Russia in the early 1980s to overcome the defect of thermal spray method. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but our research team tried to apply this method to macro scale deposition. The macro scale deposition causes deformation of a thin substrate which is usually convex to the deposited side. In this research, the main cause of the deformation was investigated using 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and properties of deposited aluminum layer such as coefficient of thermal expansion, Elastic modulus, hardness, electric conductivity were measured. From the result of the analysis, it was concluded that compressive residual stress was the main reason of substrate deformation while CTE had little effect.

  • Silicone is recently used for LED chip lense due to its good thermal stability and optical transmittance. In order to predict residual stress which causes optical briefringence and mechanical warpage of silicone, finite element analysis was conducted for curing process during silicone molding. For analysis of curing process, a dynamic cure kinetics model was derived based on the differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) test and applied to the material properties for finite element analysis. Finite element simulation result showed that the slow cure reduced abrupt reaction heat and it was predicted decrease of the residual stress.

  • Techniques of tool posts are developing such that variable machining is possible using only one machine for the complication of a product's shape and to reduce the machining time. In order to develop a mill turret with a variable machining function with the mounting of mill turret units on a B-axis tilting table, we determine the static/dynamic stability of the structure of the mill turret. To this end, a static structural analysis and a modal analysis were conducted. From the results of the static structural analysis, the maximum stress was found to be less than the allowable stress. By the comparing the results of the modal analysis of the excitation frequencies of the mill turret, there were no resonance regions found. Therefore, the mill turret with the B-axis tilting facility is shown to have good structural integrity.

  • The dynamic characteristics of the annular pressure seal employed in pump have been theoretically deduced with consideration of the effects of elastic deformation due to the thermal stress. The thermal deformation is developed for the two-dimensional steady thermal stress distribution in a infinite circular cylinder subject to heating of the seal and shaft surface into the surrounding fluid. To demonstrate this analysis, the effects of thermal stress on rotordynamic coefficients and logarithmic decrement for annular plain seals was shown.
