  • In this paper the overall dynamic response of simple railway bridges subjected to high-speed trains is investigated numerically based on the mechanical models of simply supported single-span and continuous two-span Bernoulli-Euler beams. Each axle of the train, which is composed of rail cars and passenger cars, is considered as moving concentrated load. Distance, magnitude, and maximum speed of the moving loads are adjusted to real high-speed trains and to load models according to Eurocode 1. Non-dimensional characteristic parameters of the train-bridge interaction system are identified. These parameters permit a spectral representation of the dynamic peak response. Response spectra assist the practicing engineers in evaluating the expected dynamic peak response in the design process of railway bridges without performing time-consuming time history analyses.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional linear and non-linear vehicle models are proposed to improve ride quality. The simulations of a vehicle passing over a bump were performed with those two vehicle models. The dynamic responses of the models were analyzed in time-domain and frequency-domain. Then, discomforts in each vibration axis and the combined-axes were evaluated based on the vibrations of the proposed models. The actual vehicle test results in time domain and frequency domain. Also, the discomfort values were compared. Then the validity of those two models were verified. Also, the design parameters of the suspension system are proposed for improving the ride quality.

  • In recent papers[Bull. Kor. Chem. Soc. 1996, 17, 735; ibid 1997, 18, 478] we reported results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the thermodynamic, structural, and dynamic properties of liquid normal alkanes, from n-butane to n-heptadecane, using three different models. Two of the three classes of models are collapsed atomic models while the third class is an atomistically detailed model. In the present paper we present results of MD simulations for the corresponding properties of liquid branched-chain alkanes using the same models. The thermodynamic property reflects that the intermolecular interactions become weaker as the shape of the molecule tends to approach that of a sphere and the surface area decreases with branching. Not like observed in the straight-chain alkanes, the structural properties of model Ⅲ from the site-site radial distribution function, the distribution functions of the average end-to-end distance and the root-mean-squared radii of gyration are not much different from those of models Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The branching effect on the self diffusion of liquid alkanes is well predicted from our MD simulation results but not on the viscosity and thermal conductivity.

  • The objective of this paper is the development of the forward-looking dynamic simulation model of a hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) for a fuel economy study. The specification of the vehicle is determined based on two factors, engine peak power to curb weight ratio and specific engine power. The steady state efficiency models of the powertrain components are explained in detail. These include a spark ignition direct injection(SIDI) engine, an integrated starter alternator(ISA), and an infinitely variable transmission(IVT). The paper describes the integration of these models into a forward facing dynamic simulation diagram using the AMESim environment. Appropriate vehicle and driver models have been added and described. The controller was designed in Simulink and was combined with the physical powertrain model by the co-simulation interface. Finally, the simulation results of the HEV are compared with those of a baseline vehicle in order to demonstrate the fuel economy potential. Results for the vehicle speed error and the fuel economy over standard driving cycles are illustrated.

  • This paper discusses the advantages of using Fourier-based periodic excitation and of combining internal and external models in dynamic robot parameter identification. Internal models relate the joint torques or forces with the motion of the robot; external models relate the reaction forces and torques on the bedplate with the motion data. This combined model allows to combine joint torque/force and reaction torque/force measurements in one parameter estimation scheme. This combined model estimation will yield more accurate parameter estimates, and consequently better predictions of actuator torque, which is shown by means of a simulated experiment on a CRS A465 industrial robot.

  • The analysis of large-scale water resources systems is often complicated by the presence of multiple reservoirs and diversions, the uncertainty of unregulated inflows and demands, and conflicting objectives. Reinforcement learning is presented herein as a new approach to solving the challenging problem of stochastic optimization of multi-reservoir systems. The Q-Learning method, one of the reinforcement learning algorithms, is used for generating integrated monthly operation rules for the Keum River basin in Korea. The Q-Learning model is evaluated by comparing with implicit stochastic dynamic programming and sampling stochastic dynamic programming approaches. Evaluation of the stochastic basin-wide operational models considered several options relating to the choice of hydrologic state and discount factors as well as various stochastic dynamic programming models. The performance of Q-Learning model outperforms the other models in handling of uncertainty of inflows.

  • One of the most influential factors on estimating the complex modulus by using longitudinal vibration of a rod-type specimen is the accuracy of the approximate models for describing the dynamic behavior of the specimen. Performance of several approximate models is investigated analytically on the basis of the Pochhammer-Chree theory in case of infinite specimen and numerically on the basis of the finite element analysis in case of finite specimen. The frequency range where each model gives good approximation and its accuracy in that range are determined.

  • Static approaches usually employed in voltage stability analysis are based on the pre-determined scenarios of varying load and generation patterns. Thus, even though the approaches are applied to the same system condition, one may obtain different voltage instability phenomena using different scenarios. In the stage of concrete control strategy determination against voltage instability, dynamic approaches with full-time and/or quasi steady-state simulations need to be applied in order to confirm the effectiveness of the established control strategies. This paper describes the ULTC and dynamic load models, and discusses characteristics of the models.

  • This paper presents an efficient methodology for accurate reliability assessment of electromagnetic devices. To achieve the goal, elaborate surrogated models to approximate constraint functions of interest are generated based on the dynamic Kriging method and a hypercube local window. Then, the Monte Carlo simulation scheme is applied to the surrogate models. This leads to reducing computational cost dramatically without degrading accuracy of the reliability analysis. The validity of the proposed method is tested and examined with a mathematical example and a loudspeaker design.

  • Because of the difficulty of acquiring new generation sites and right- of-way, additional units have been added to the existing generation sites and the transmission system has been developed into highly meshed configuration. The reliable operation of power systems has been restricted by this system characteristics. The enhancement of system analysis techniques and establishment of appropriate measures have been required in this situation. In addition the deregulation of electric power industry in Korea would give rise to better tools for power system analysis and control. In this paper, dynamic models were developed.
