  • The most representative research network in Korea, KREONET, has developed DynamicKL, an advance reservation based Network Service Agent (NSA) for user driven virtual circuit services. DynamicKL provides reservation, provisioning, release, termination, and inquiry web services for network resources by using an open standard network service interface (NSI), as well as web services for network resources by using a GUI interface. In addition, it has the RICE interface to support a protection management function per VC for virtual circuits and reservations. In this article, a protection management per VC for provisioned VCs and reservations is addressed in the DynamicKL framework, as a contribution to the VC protection management issue, which results in more manageable and reliable VC services compared to other advance reservation frameworks. An administrator can detect successful or unsuccessful VC protections in the event of a primary link failure and successful or unsuccessful VC retrievals after a primary link repair, by using RICE.

  • The uncertainties involved in structural performances are of importance when the optimum number and property of seismic retrofit devices are determined. This paper proposes a seismic retrofit design framework for asymmetric soft-first-story buildings, considering uncertainties in the soil condition and seismic retrofit device. The effect of the uncertain parameters on the structural performance is used to find a robust and optimal seismic retrofit solution. The framework finds a robust and optimal seismic retrofit solution by finding the optimal locations and mechanical properties of the seismic retrofit device for different realizations of the uncertain parameters. The structural performance for each realization is computed to evaluate the effect of the uncertainty parameters on the seismic performance. The framework utilizes parallel processing to decrease the computationally intensive nonlinear dynamic analysis time. The framework returns a robust design solution that satisfies the given limit state for every realization of the uncertain parameters. The proposed framework is applied to the seismic retrofit design of a five-story asymmetric soft-first-story case study structure retrofitted with a viscoelastic damper. Robust optimal parameters for retrofitting a structure to satisfy the limit state for the different realizations of the uncertain parameter are found using the proposed framework. According to the performance evaluation results of the retrofitted structure, the developed framework is proved effective in the seismic retrofit of the asymmetric structure with inherent uncertainties.

  • Web services on the Internet are not always reliable in terms of service availability and performance. Dynamic service coordination capability of a system or an application invoking Web services is essential to cope with such unreliable situations. In dynamic service coordination, if a Web service does not respond within a specific time constraint, it is replaced with another Web service at run time for reliable invocation of Web services. In this paper, we develop an exception based dynamic service coordination framework for Web services. In the framework, all necessary information for dynamic service coordination is explicitly specified and summarized as a set of attributes. Then classes and workflows, supporting dynamic service coordination and invoking Web services, are automatically created based on these attributes. Developers of Web services client programs can make the invocations of Web services reliable by calling the methods of the classes. Some performance loss has been observed in the indirect invocation of a Web service. However, when we consider the flexibility and reliability gained from the method, the performance loss would be acceptable in many cases.

  • SCA (Software Communication Architecture), which has been adopted as a SDR(Software Defined Radio) Forum standard, provides a framework that successfully exploits common design patterns of embedded systems software. However, the SCA is inadequate as a component framework since it does not explicitly specify (1) a component model that defines how to express a component interface and how to implement it, (2) a package model that defines what and how to package in deployment units, and (3) a deployment model that defines the deployment environment and deployment process. In this paper, we propose a SCA-based component framework for SDR. Specifically, we present (1) a component model that defines a component as a specialized CORBA object that implements object management functionality, (2) a package model exploiting the existing XML descriptors of the SCA, and (3) a deployment model that defines a SCA-based deployment environment, a boot-up process that restores the deployment state, and a deployment process that supports lazy application instantiation and dynamic component replacement.

  • Lee et al have proposed a framework for the linguistic map-based navigational planning of a mobile robot on dynamic environment and provided simulation results applied it to the static environment[1], In this paper, we extends the navigational planning of a mobile robot into dynamic environment. There are two kinds of dynamic obstacles: (1) Time-obstacles that change condition of obstacles with time. (2) Space-obstacles that move their position with time. We propose an algorithm which a mobile robot identifies and avoids the two kinds of dynamic obstacles. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages: (1) The fuzzy logic-based perception stage which identifies the dynamic obstacles around a mobile robot by using sensory data and fuzzy rules, (2) The planning stage which plans the path to goal by avoiding the dynamic obstacles[2-6]. We provide computer simulation results for a mobile robot in order to show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • This study analyzes the Internet utilization pattern of customer by comprehensively investigating the previous studies on the behavior pattern of customer in terms of Internet business. Based on the analysis, this study develops research framework that supports strategic decision-making for resource allocation in Internet business. Such research framework would be helpful for providing the typology of Internet business model that can be specialized by each industry. As a result of the simulation analysis, it was found that the optimal resource allocation portfolio providing maximum profits to the Internet bookstore involves large-scale investment on delivery service and customer support service which are the key factors for post-purchase customer satisfaction, regardless of the growth pattern or size of Internet bookstore market. Consequently, from the above analysis, the investment ratio of resources for the profit maximization of Internet bookstore was drawn. Conclusively, based on the comprehensive examination of the results, this study provided a framework for dynamic resource allocation decision-making, and proposed a management strategy which allows consumers to shop under more favorable environment, and simultaneously enables the Internet bookstore to accomplish management objectives such as continuous growth and profit maximization.

  • Smartphones are important platforms because of their sophisticated computation, communication, and sensing capabilities, which enable a variety of applications in the Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Moreover, advancements in hardware have enabled sensors on smartphones such as environmental and chemical sensors that make sensor data collection readily accessible for a wide range of applications. However, dynamic, opportunistic, and heterogeneous mobility patterns of smartphone users that vary throughout the day, which greatly affects the efficacy of sensor data collection. Therefore, it is necessary to consider phone users mobility patterns to design data collection schedules that can reduce the loss of sensor data. In this paper, we propose a mobility-based weighted adaptive opportunistic scheduling framework that can adaptively adjust to the dynamic, opportunistic, and heterogeneous mobility patterns of smartphone users and provide prioritized scheduling based on various application scenarios, such as velocity, region of interest, and sensor type. The performance of the proposed framework is compared with other scheduling frameworks in various heterogeneous smartphone user mobility scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling improves the transmission rate by 8 percent and can also improve the collection of higher-priority sensor data compared with other scheduling approaches.

  • Web service is an important technology to develop business to business e-commerce application. From a business perspective of time to market, dynamic evolution offers flexibility that software can adapt to unforeseen and fluctuating business requirements. OWL-S, based on OWL, is a service ontology language. The semantics provided by OWL support automation of service discovery, invocation, and service composition. In this paper we propose a framework to support dynamic evolution of service-oriented applications. We extend use-case analysis method to derive service description by defining requirements concept and mapping from requirement concept to activity diagram. A prototype is provided to show the validity of this framework.

  • In recent years, along with the advances made in performance-based design optimization, the need for fast calculation of response parameters in dynamic analysis procedures has become an important issue. The main problem in this field is the extremely high computational demand of time-history analyses which may convert the solution algorithm to illogical ones. Two simplifying strategies have shown to be very effective in tackling this problem; first, simplified nonlinear modeling investigating minimum level of structural modeling sophistication, second, wavelet analysis of earthquake records decreasing the number of acceleration points involved in time-history loading. In this paper, we try to develop an efficient framework, using both strategies, to solve the performance-based multi-objective optimal design problem considering the initial cost and the seismic damage cost of steel moment-frame structures. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the Pareto optimal solutions. The constraints of the optimization problem are considered in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommended design specifications. The results from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate the capabilities of the framework in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.
