  • Silk fabrics were dyed with persimmon dyeing solution. The persimmon extracts were obtained with boiling water from persimmon fruits and leaves. The changes of K/S values were investigated according to the concentration of solution, the ripeness of persimmons and the method of mordanting. The colours of the fabrics differed according to the kinds of mordants. The mordant, FeSO$_4$, was more effective than other mordants. The physical properties were not changed hardly after the natural dyeing with persimmon extracts.

  • A low-temperature dyeing system for silk fabrics based on a redox system has been investigated. Some factors affecting dyeing of silk fabrics with levelling acid dyes in the absence and presence of certain redox system were investigated under different conditions. The variables studied were; type and concentration of redox system, dyeing conditions, i. e. temperature and time, dye concentration, material-to-liquor ration(LR) and colour fastness. The colour strength(K/S value) is outstandingly higher in the presence than in the absence of redox system. A comparison between the colour strength values of such dyeings abtained the three redox system would call for the following order ; Glyoxal/hydrogen peroxide>thiourea/hydrogen peroxide>glucose/hydrgen peroxide> nothing. In the presence of redox system, free radicals are supposed to be formed in both the fiber and the dye and the interaction between these free radicals bring about covalent fixation beside the usual electrostatic bonds, hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces.

  • The natural dyestuff, grape skin dye was manufactured from grape skin by boiling in 0.1% HCI solution, eliminating the sugar and powdering in freeze dryer. Cotton, wool, silk and nylon fabrics were dyed under several conditions using the manufactured grape skin dye to investigate the dyeability and color fastness. Dyeing was operated in acidic dyebath of pH 4 because the grape skin is anionic. The color of dyed fabrics were affected on temperature of dyeing solution. Under 80$\^{C}$, the color of dyed fabrics were red or violet, but changed to brown in laundering. Above 100$\^{C}$, the color were brown and safe in laundering. Dyeabilities on wool, silk, and nylon fabrics were good, especially silk fabrics were dyed deeper than others. Dyeability was developed with concenturation of dyeing solution. All the dyed fabrics were excellent in color fastness to crocking and laundering. Light fastness was low to moderate. The light fastness of dyed nylon fabrics were as poor as grade 1, but they could be improved to grade 3∼4 by aftertreatment with gallic acid.

  • In this study, the colorants of Wisteria floribunda leaf were extracted with water. Silk and wool fabrics have been dyed with the aqueous extract of Wisteria floribunda leaf and their dyeabilities was studied. Additionally the fastness to washing, drycleaning, light and perspiration were also investigated. Silk and wool fabrics dyed with the extract of Wisteria floribunda leaf were colored in yellowish red tint. The optimum dyeing condition of the colorants extracted from Wisteria floribunda leaf was three repeated dyeing at 70, $95^{\circ}C$ for 1hr using post mordanting. For dyed silk and wool fabrics, the fastness to washing was improved by mordanting, and the fastness to drycleaning was very outstanding.

  • To set up the outstanding and scientific dyeing method in making the condensed liquid of pigment obtained from onion skins and the improved reliability, the following basic experiments were performed. The pigment was extracted in the distilled water at $70^{\circ}C$ and methanol at room temperature and then it was analyzed with LC/MS/MS system (Liquid Chomatography/Mass Spectroscopy/Mass Spectroscophy, LIQ Advantage Max, Thermo Finnigan, USA) for its pigmental characteristics. The unrefined silk and refined silk were dyed by making use of the derived pigment in such a way. The chromameter (CR-200, Minolta, Japan) was used to measure the change in surface color in textiles to be dyed by the extracting condition and the color difference ${\Delta}E$ was determined according to the color difference formula CIE LAB through measuring the psychometric lightness L* and chromaticity coordinates a* and b*.

  • The influence of four types of reactive dyes that are different in reactive group on silk fabric were investigated at three different temperatures, 5$0^{\circ}C$, 7$0^{\circ}C$, 9$0^{\circ}C$ and the pH range from 7.0 to 11.0. The amount of absorption and fixation showed the optimum condition. The damage of silk during dyeing was determined by the change of physical properties. The results are given as follows: 1. The amount of dye fixed on fabrics at constant pH varied upon the reactivity of dyes. The affinity of dyes for silk fabrics were in order of Lanasol>Procion>Remazol>Cibacron. 2. The percentage of dye fixation on fabrics showed different tendency with temperature. The dye fixation of Cibacron and Procion was decreased above 7$0^{\circ}C$ because of the influence of hydrolysis. The dye fixation of Lanasol and Remazol was increased with the increase of temperature. This showed that temperature did not affect on hydrolysis. 3. The tensile strength of dyed fabric decreased with increasing pH and temperature owing to high temperature and alkaline damage on silk fabric. 4. The optimum conditions of dyeing silk with reactive dyes were as follows: Cibacron -7$0^{\circ}C$, pH 9.0, Procion-5$0^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0, Remazol-5$0^{\circ}C$, pH 8.0, and Lanasol-9$0^{\circ}C$, pH 9.0.

  • The purpose of this study was to improve dye effect and method in order to facilitate the use of persimmon juice dyeing. Silk fabrics were pad-dyed to 100% pick-up using padding machine after dipping in persimmon juice extracted from unripe persimmons indigenous to Jeju. The color of dyed silk fabrics by padding method was more even and repeatable than that by traditional hand method. Persimmon juice concentrations were 4 types 10, 25, 50 and 100%. The silk fabrics were pad-dyed to 100% pick-up and were repeatedly dyed two times and three times with 100% concentration. The higher the concentration, the more color deepened. UV Irradiation instead of sunlight was applied to color developing. Irradiation times were shortened to 1-8hrs. Color values which reguired 30-50 hrs. in sunlight irradiation. were obtained in 3-5 hrs. with UV irradiation. Tensile strengths of silk fabrics in UV irradiation decreased but not decreased in sunlight irradiation. Elongations of silk fabrics in sunlight irradiation increased but decreased in W irradiation. Drape stiffness increased up to three times.
