Objective : This study aimed to assess the effects of occupation-based lifestyle intervention programs on older adults in the local community. Methods : Nine community-dwelling older individuals participated in this study using a one-group pre-post design. The occupation-based lifestyle intervention program consisted of 12 group sessions, and one individual session was conducted for seven weeks. Occupational balance, activity occupancy, activity participation, depression, health-related quality of life, and program satisfaction were assessed. Results : The average attendance rate of the nine participants was 10.11 (SD=1.36). Overall occupational balance (p=.012), activity participation status (p=.008), performance (p=.012), and satisfaction with activity participation (p=.008) were increased. Furthermore, the results showed changes in leisure time (p=.008) and rest time (p=.008). Finally, there were some improvements in the overall health-related quality of life (p=.034) and depression scores (p=.012). Conclusions : Occupation-based lifestyle intervention programs positively affected occupational balance, activity occupancy, activity participation, depression, and health-related quality of life in community-dwelling older adults. This research suggests promising benefits and feasibility of the program for community-dwelling older adults.
Background. This study was done to identify the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) and BPH-related symptoms among community-dwelling elderly men in Korea. In addition, quality of life and health care-seeking behavior were explored. Methods. A total of 417 elderly men were surveyed using the IPSS (International Prostatic Symptom Score) and a structured questionnaire on health care-seeking behaviors. Results. The prevalence of BPH was $19.7\%$. Of those with BPH, $80.3\%$ reported mild symptoms, $13.2\%$ moderate symptoms, and $6.5\%$ severe symptoms. The severity of BPH-related symptoms was significantly correlated with quality of life. Among those with BPH, $42.7\%$ had never consulted with anyone about their symptoms. Conclusions. BPH has emerged as a serious public health problem in elderly men. Elderly people who experience worse symptoms of BPH have a lower quality of life. Many elderly with BPH do not seek health care, mainly due to misconceptions about BPH. The provision of educational programs for BPH may significantly improve the quality of life of elderly men.

This paper aims at studying about spatial structures and formative characteristics of Lucy Orta's fashion design. Her works utilizes the thought related on the architectural space that has been revealed sharp change of the paradigm since the late of 20th century. Lucy Orta against individualism of the urban life, and manufactures portable and moving housing and multi-functional fashion that is paved with individual rest unit and give a sense of security through simple combination among the units. Besides, she has development multiple portable clothing and equipments for the rescuethrough exploiting pioneering high technology. The results of this study can be summarized as the following: 1) refuge habitant creates individual space for physical and mental protection from the urban surrounding, 2) nomadic dwelling shows multi-functional fashion space fit for digital nomads' life style aims at continuous movement, 3) connective nexus and urban life guard are comprise of detachable individual unit in public space for remaking of the bonds, affinity, and relationship, and the complex of rescue clothing and equipments for meeting a challenge of the threat about human existence from uncertain environmental change in the future.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate factors associated with depression and quality of life (QoL) among the community-dwelling elderly. Methods: This study used a descriptive correlational research design. The subjects were 730 elders aged over 65 living in D district of Daegu. Data were collected using questionnaires for 30 days in April, 2007. The research instruments utilized in this study were a physical function scale of long-term care insurance system, Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korea Version (GDSSF-K), and Korean Quality of Life Scale (KoQoLs). The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan, stepwise multiple regression, and Spearman correlation. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 72.6, and 68.8% and 57.9% of subjects were, respectively, female and living alone. 12.3% of variance in depression was explained by age, education, economic status, subjective health, alcohol consumption, condition of teeth, and fall experience. 18.2% of variance in QoL was explained by economic status, number of diseases, condition of teeth, incontinence, paralysis, and IADL. Economic status and condition of teeth were contributing factors to depression and QoL of the elderly. Conclusion: Findings of this study may be useful in understanding the health status of the community-dwelling elderly and developing more regionally specific health promotion strategies.
This study has been performed to analyze housing status in later life. In this study, 234 Koreans aged 60 or more were interviewed for their current housing status. The results are drawn as follows: 1. The household size does not highly fluctuate in later life; it ranges from three to five overall. But there is a trend difference over region; The household size continuously increases until 70's in urban area, but it shows increase & decrease changes over five-year intervals. 2. The number of bedrooms slightly ranges from 3- to 3.8 over urban and rural areas without noticeable trend for age intervals. 3. Use of indoor area has regional difference; It ranges from 28 to 40 pyoung in urban area, but it does more widely form 27.7 to 50 in rural area. 4. There is a most significant region effect on structure type for the elderly; For the urban elderly, proportion of those living in single detached dwelling consistently decreases as age increases. For the rural elderly on the other hand, the rate of those living in single detached dwelling sharply increases in their 70's and the rate reaches 85.7%. 5. For the ownership trend, more than 70% of the elderly are home owners at the age 60-64, but the rate continuously decreases in later life stage while the rate of those living in their children-owned home increases.
This study examines the details and characteristics of prizewinning plans of Cho-Sun housing plan competition promoted by Daily Cho-Sun Company during Japanese colonial period. The main features of Cho-Sun housing plan competition were that the competition held with an application of popular newspaper readers and a judging committee was composed of only Korean architects, especially Park, Gil-Ryong as the president of the board of examiners. Cho-Sun housing plan competition put ideological factors for the improvement of living as like advancing to the cultured(modem) life, respecting for family life, respecting for privacy of family members and so on. First of all, the competition suggested the direction of the improvement of dwelling spaces which focused on making harmonious home life. This study found common characteristics of prizewinning plans of Cho-Sun housing plan competition as the result. First, Cho-Sun housing plan competition introduced a centralized house plan as a model of the improvement of small-sized houses. Second, architectural orders of western or Japanese style mingled with ones of korean traditional style in prizewinning plans as entrance hall, western style reception room(parlour), maid's room, bathroom for example. And a manner of seating using chairs was brought into the style of living which would be assumed in the prizewinning plans. Third, traditional way of composing dwelling spaces was maintained, receiving the characteristics of dwelling spaces of japanese style simultaneously, which central corridor was put at the heart of house for improving arrangement of rooms and flow lines. Fourth, lavatory and bathroom were placed inside of the house.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the social determinants of health (SDH) associated with health-related quality of life (HQOL) among the community-dwelling elderly, based on the conceptual framework of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH). Methods: A survey was conducted with 199 elders aged 65 years or older sampled through convenient sampling. Data were collected through face to face interviews by trained interviewers using a structured questionnaire, which included scales of the residential area, social support, sense of community, social network, health behaviors, and HQOL. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and stepwise multivariate regression. Results: Major SDH affecting HQOL included the participants' residential area, sense of community, and health behavior. The HQOL of the elderly residing in the B area with a low rate of basic livelihood security recipients was higher than that of those residing in other areas. Conclusion: CSDH framework was useful to determine the factors associated with HQOL among the community-dwelling elderly. In addition to their health behavior, their sense of community was found to be a SDH of HQOL, indicating the need of health promotion programs tailored to the characteristics of residential areas and strategies to enhance involvement in community activities.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare levels of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) between fallers and non-fallers among community-dwelling elderly people. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted with the secondary analysis of 2,067 elderly people registered in S-Gu Visiting Health Care Program in Seoul, South Korea. Participants were 206 fallers and 206 non-fallers who were age- and sex-matched with fallers. HRQOL was measured by SF-8 including physical component summary (physical HRQOL) and mental component summary (mental HRQOL). Results: There were more people in the faller group having more than or equal to three chronic diseases (p<.001), living in multiplex houses (p=.004), and being dependent by the activities of daily living (ADL) (p=.001) and instrumental ADL (IADL) levels (p<.001) than those in the non-faller group. Fallers had higher levels of depression than non-fallers (p<.001). Moreover, fallers had significantly lower levels of both physical HRQOL (p<.001) and mental HRQOL (p=.001), after adjusting for number of chronic diseases, ADL, IADL, depression, healthcare insurance, and living environment. Conclusion: Among the community-dwelling elderly people, falllers had lower levels of HRQOL than non-fallers, and such a difference remained even after the adjustment for covariates. Factors that underlie the different susceptibility to HRQOL need to be explored.

The purpose of this research is to identify the characteristics of the positive and negative expressions about residential common life between the elderly and the young and present the direction on Homeshare. In-depth interviews were conducted from Feb. to May 2016 to identify the experiences of residential common life with 10 elderly and 11 young. The result is as follows. First, Homeshare dwelling was classified into five themes of human being, residential environment, life, management and emotion. Homeshare unlike ordinary dwelling centered on blood relatives, is characteristic to involve the management that connects between the elderly and young. Second, both the elderly and young were analyzed to be positive about the residential common life. It was shown that the elderly are most positive about human being, whereas young are positive about management and residential environment. The elderly is positive to mutual exchange with the young and young's independent life but the young is positive to factors that support comfortable personal life. Third, negative expression was shown a generation gap between the elderly and the young. The elderly recognized to be negative that young people has lived freely without consideration for the elderly. In order to solve these factors, it is necessary to make improvements through arranging rules for living. Fourth, three themes, human being, residential environment and life, analyzed to be the most important factors to sustain residential common life of Homeshare. The link between management and 3 themes leads to an expansion of positive emotion, which is structurally stable and is expected to increase the sustainability of the residential common life on Homeshare.

Activities in the dwelling are inseparable from housing design. Spatial features often result from patterns of activities that take place within the dwelling. Activities are further elaborated to affect house plans, furniture, arrangement, and equipment. However, discrepancies still exist between housing design and behavior, where housing design often fails to accommodate activities and behavioral dimensions within the family and the dwelling. This paper addresses the relationship between dwelling activities and housing design by means of a qualitative study that aims to understand the needs of the Indonesian dwelling through activity analysis. To do so, the research adopts a methodology that involves collecting data from measurements of the house, house plan analysis, and photographs, in addition to in-depth semi-structured interviews with families. Taking Bandung as a case study, 9 houses and families were selected as respondents that share similar family life-cycles, number of family members, and building size. The findings from the study suggest that spacious and open plans are preferred by the family, while maintaining family privacy. Guest areas are used to host formal guests and to restrict visitor access in the house. Service areas such as kitchens and laundry areas are the core areas for household activities for cooking, laundry, and drying. To meet social activities such as community gathering, open plan design is necessary to allow flexibility of furniture reconfiguration to accommodate extra guests.
