Aerosol slurry samples were collected in 60-min interval using Korean Semi-continuous Elements in Aerosol Sampler (KSEAS) between May 19 and June 6, 2010 at an urban site of Gwangju. The $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected with a flow rate of 16.7 L/min and particles are grown by condensation of water vapor in a condenser maintained at ${\sim}5^{\circ}C$ after saturation by direct injection of steam. The resulting droplets are collected in a liquid slurry with a airdroplet separator. Concentrations of 16 elements (Al, Fe, Mn, Ca, K, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ti, V, Ni, Co, As, Se) in the collected slurry samples were determined off-line by ICP-MS. KSEAS sample analysis encompassed the sampling periods for which 24-hr average elemental species concentrations were calculated for comparison with those derived from 24-hr integrated filter samples. Relationship between elemental species measured by two methods indicated high correlation coefficients (r), mostly greater than r of 0.80. However, we note that concentrations of Al, K, Ca, Mn, and Fe, which are often associated with crustal elemental particles, in the KSEAS samples, were substantially lower (1.4~11 times) than those found in the typical filter-based samples. This discrepancy is probably due to difficulties in transferring insoluble dust particles to the collection vials in the KSEAS. Temporal profiles of elemental concentrations indicate that some transient events in their concentrations are observed over the sampling periods. For the elemental species studied, atmospheric concentrations during the transient events increased by factors of 4 in Mn~80 in Zn, compared to their background levels. Principle component analyses were applied to the hourly KSEAS data sets to identify sources affecting the concentrations of the metal constituents observed. In this study, we conclude that hourly measurements for particle-bound elemental constituents were extremely useful for revealing the short-term variability in their concentrations and developing insights into their sources.

This study investigated quality properties of alkali activated cement free mortar using industrial by-product such as cement kiln dust(CKD), silica fume(SF) and quartz sand powder(SP) to compare with previous research about blast furnace slag(BS) and fly ash(FA). The results were as following. All materials were effective to increase compressive strength, however they showed different tendency on flowability. CKD and SP increased flowability, but on the other hand SF did not because it's blain was great difference with other materials. Flowability and compressive strength were related with grading distributions of binders because CKD, SP and SF which had small particle size filled up BS and FA. Application of industrial by-products with various grading distributions could be effective for the high early strength and flowability of alkali activated cement free mortar using BS.
The purposes of this research are to investigate the pollution level of heavy metals due to the urbanization and industrialization in the satellite cities of Seoul, and to assess the chemical species and the sources of heavy metals in highly contaminated soils and dusts. Soil and dust samples were collected from the Uijeongbu and the Koyang cities, which are northern and the northwestern satellite cities of Seoul metropolitan city, respectively. Relatively high pH values($6.3{\sim}9.9$) were found in roadside soils compared with agricultural and forest soils. Difference in pH values of soils was not identified between before and after rainy seasons. In spite of no specific pollution sources in the above cities, the contents of Cu, Pb, and Zn in soils and dusts were much higher than the world average contents. The metal levels in dusts were higher than those in soils, but the metal concentration in dusts was significantly decreased after rainy season. Pollution index was high(> 1.0) in the areas of heavy traffic, industrial complex, and city centres. There is an appreciable proportion of total Zn in exchangeable/water-acid soluble fraction. Copper is predominantly associated with reducible and oxidizable phases, whereas Pb is largely in reducible association. It is concluded that the mobility and bioavailability of metals are high in the order of Zn >> Cu > Pb, on the basis of characteristic particle morphology and chemical composition, Pb-containing particles are originated probably from the automobile exhaust, particularly in heavy traffic areas. The metallic forms and iron-oxide associated forms of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb can be assessed as industrial origin.

This study was undertaken to determine the concentrations of airborne bacteria, fungi, particles, and endotoxin in swine and chicken houses. Six swine buildings and seven chicken houses were randomly selected in southern Gyonggi Province, South Korea. The geometric mean concentrations of airborne bacteria in swine and chicken houses were $2.7{\times}10^5\;CFU/m^3$ and $5.6{\times}10^7\;CFU/m^3$, respectively. The airborne bacteria concentrations in chicken houses were significantly higher than those of swine houses (p<0.05). The geometric mean concentration of airborne fungi in swine houses was $4.9{\times}10^3\;CFU/m^3$, which was higher than the value of $2.1{\times}10^3\;CFU/m^3$ found in chicken houses. The mean concentrations of airborne particles and endotoxin in swine houses were $3.48\;mg/m^3$ and $943.1\;EU/m^3$, and they were $15.43\;mg/m^3$ and $1,430.5\;EU/m^3$ in chicken houses, respectively. A significant difference between swine and chicken houses was found for total dust (p<0.05), but not for endotoxin. In this study, the concentrations of endotoxin in both swine and chicken houses as well as particles in chicken houses were high, and in about 50% of the samples exceeded the worker health safety levels of $614\;EU/m^3$ suggested in previous studies. These results may indicate a considerable respiratory hazard for workers in these environments.
A high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) system based on injection-seeded Nd:YAG laser and iodine absorption filter has been developed for the quantitative measurement of aerosol and cloud. The laser frequency is stabilized at 80 MHz by a frequency locking system and the absorption line of iodine cell is selected at the 1111 line with 2 GHz width. The observations show that the HSRL can provide vertical profiles of particle extinction coefficient, backscattering coefficient and lidar ratio for cloud and aerosol up to 12 km altitude, simultaneously. For the measured cases, the lidar ratios are 10~20 sr for cloud, 28~37 sr for dust, and 58~70 sr for urban pollution aerosol. It reveals the potential of HSRL to distinguish the type of aerosol and cloud. Time series measurements are given and demonstrate that the HSRL has ability to continuously observe the aerosol and cloud for day and night.

The main object of this study was to investigate experimentally the characteristics of cyclone-bag filter with bottom inlet to decrease the high pressure drop which was one of main problems of fabric bag filter. The experiment was executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop(specially, pressure drop of fabric filter) characteristics of the cyclone-bag filter in comparison with those of general fabric bag filter with various experimental parameters such as the inlet velocity, dust loading and variation of vortex region, etc. In the results, the tangential inlet type showed higher collection efficiency for submicron particles below $1{\mu}m$ in diameter than of center inlet, and over 99% for overall collection efficiency. For the inlet particle concentration $100mg/m^3$, pressure drop reduction ratios were shown as 15~38% with the inlet velocity in case of large bag, while 30~48% for small bag due to the increase of vortex region.
Platelet-activating factor(PAF) is a phospholipid mediator of pulmonary inflammation, and immunologic reaction. In this study, the role of PAF on tumor necrosis factor$(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production by rat alveolar macrophages(AM) was examined. When PAF $(10^{-12}{\sim}10{-16}\;M)$ alone was added to AM culture, $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production was not significantly increased above the resting level. In contrast, the combined addition of PAF $(10^{-6}\;M)$ and muramyl dipeptide(MDP) $(1.0\;{\mu}g\ml)$ to AM cultures markedly enhanced $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production with 8.2 fold increase compared with AM culture in resting state. This potentiative effect was 313% above the sum of the separate effects of PAF and MDP. To characterize MDP effects on $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production, the dose-response of AM cultured with various concentrations of MDP was tested. High level of MDP $(10\;{\mu}g\ml)$ could not significantly enhance the potentiation effect on $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production compared with AM cultures with low level of MDP $(0.1\;{\mu}g\ml)$, i.e. 112.5% vs 107.8%, respectively when $10^{-10}$ M of PAF was simultaneously added to the cell culture. These data support that the potentiation of TNF. g production in AM culture is mediated by PAF rather than MDf It was also evaluated whether the similar result was obtained in silica, respirable toxic particle-treated AM culture. $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production was also significantly enhanced in the PAF $(10^{-6}\;M)$ and silica $(50\;{\mu}g\ml)$-added cell cultures with 4.7 fold above the value of silica alone-stimulated cells. These results indicate that PAF can potentiate $(TNF_{-{\alpha}})$ production by MDP-or silica- stimulated AM and suggest that PAF may play a potent role in lung inflammation and disease associated with microbe and occupational dust exposures.
Novel fabrication technique was developed for high strength Reaction-Bonded SiC (RBSC) hot gas filter for use in IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system. The room and high temperature fracture strengths for Si-melt infiltrated reaction-bonded SiC were 50-123, and 60-66 MPa, respectively. The average pore size was 60-70 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the porosity was about 34 vol%. RBSC infiltrated with molten silicon showed improved fracture strength at high temperature, as compared to that of clay-bonded SiC, due to SiC/Si phase present within SiC phase. The thickness for SiC/Si phase was increased with increasing powder particle size of SiC from 10 to 34 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Pressure drop with dust particles showed similar response as compared to that for Schumacher type 20 filter. The filter fabricated in the present study showed good performance in that the filtered powder size was reduced drastically to below 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ within 4 min.
Patients with severe asthma have unmet clinical needs for effective and safe therapies. One possibility may be mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy, which can improve asthma in murine models. However, it remains unclear how MSCs exert their beneficial effects in asthma. Here, we examined the effect of human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs (hUC-MSC) on two mouse models of severe asthma, namely, Alternaria alternata-induced and house dust mite (HDM)/diesel exhaust particle (DEP)-induced asthma. hUC-MSC treatment attenuated lung type 2 (Th2 and type 2 innate lymphoid cell) inflammation in both models. However, these effects were only observed with particular treatment routes and timings. In vitro co-culture showed that hUC-MSC directly downregulated the interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13 production of differentiated mouse Th2 cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from asthma patients. Thus, these results showed that hUC-MSC treatment can ameliorate asthma by suppressing the asthmogenic cytokine production of effector cells. However, the successful clinical application of MSCs in the future is likely to require careful optimization of the route, dosage, and timing.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of the dolomite particle and the shell powder on soil characteristics, dry matter yield and nutritive value of forages in loam soil at the experimental field of National Livestock Research Institute, Suwon, from 1994 to 1996. Application treatments were control, lime, dolomite 0.5, 2.0, 4.0mm, and shell powder in mixed pasture. Rate of dust occurrence was greatly decreased according to dolomite application and the dissolving rate in soil was highest in shell powder application among treatments. Although there was no significant difference, average dry matter yield of forages for 3 years was slightly increased with the application of lime, shell powder, dolomite 0.5mm, 4.0mm, 2.0mm and control in order. Both Ca and Mg contents of forages were no differences among treatments in 1994. However, all treatments were higher than those of control in 1995. And K and Na contents of forages were no differences among treatments. Lime requirement was greatly increased from 2,630 to 6,150kg per ha with the lapse of time. Although soil hardness was optimum level at first, it was likely to become hard little by little after treatments. Solid phase of soil was lowered a little except for control. Organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ contents of soil were highest in shell powder application among treatments, and K, Ca and Mg contents of soil were no differences among treatments. Ca content was increased a little in 1995, but decreased a little in 1996 compared to that of soil before treatments in 1994. AIso, Mg content was lowered than that of soil before experiment in 1995 and 1996. The results demonstrated that use of dolomite and shell powder as lime substitutes could be reduced dust problem and coast pollution as well as soil improvement. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the dolomite and the shell powder every 3 years in loam soil.
