Aerosol physical properties have been measured at Pusan National University by using the 16-channel LPC(Laser Particle Counter), and particle characteristics have been examined for the period from Aug. 4 2007 to Dec. 30, 2008. Annual total average, seasonal average, and other averages of the meteorologically classified four categories such as Asian dust, precipitation, foggy, and clear days are respectively described here. Both annually and seasonally averaged number concentration show three peaks at the particle diameter of 0.3, 1.3, and $4{\mu}m$, respectively. However, the first peak for summer season tends to be shifted toward smaller size than other seasons, implying the strong fine particle generation. Meteorological condition shows strong contrast in aerosol concentrations. In Asian dust case, relatively lower number concentrations of fine particles (i.e., smaller than $0.5{\mu}m$) were predominant, while higher concentrations of coarse particles were found particularly for the size bigger than $0.5{\mu}m$. In precipitation day, number concentrations were decreased by approximately 30% due to the removal process of precipitation. Foggy day shows significantly higher concentrations for fine particles, implying the importance of the aerosol condensation process of micro-fine-particle growing to fine-particle. Finally the regressed particle size distribution function was fitted optimally with two log-normal distribution, and discussed the similarities and differences among four categorized cases of the Asian dust, precipitation, foggy, and clear days.

The objective of the study was to develop an Urban Windway Forest Creation Planning Technique for the Improvement of the Urban Environment using the case of Daejeon Metropolitan City. Through a spatial analysis of fine dust and heat waves, a basin zone, in which the concentration was relatively serious, was derived, and an area with the potential of cold air flow was selected as the target area for the windway forest development by analyzing the climate and winds in the relevant zone. Extreme fine dust areas included the areas of the Daejeon Industrial Complex Regeneration Business District in Daedeok-gu and Daedeok Techno Valley in Yuseong-gu. Heat wave areas included the areas of Daedeok industrial Complex in Moksang-dong, the Daejeon Industrial Complex Regeneration Business District in Daehwa-dong, and the high-density residential area in Ojeong-dong. As a result of measuring the wind speeds in Daejeon with an Automatic Weather System, the average wind speeds during the day and night were 0.1 to 1.7 m/s,, respectively. So, a plan of for a windway forest that smoothly induces the movement of cold air formed in outer forests at night is required. The fine dust/heat wave intensive management zones of Daejeon Metropolitan City were Daejeoncheon, Yudeungcheon, Gapcheon-Yudeungcheon, and Gapcheon. The windway forest formation plan case involved the old city center of Daejeon Metropolitan City among the four zones, the Gapcheon-Yudeungcheon area, in which the windway formation effect was presumed to be high. The Gapcheon-Yudeungcheon area is a downtown area that benefits from the cold and fresh air generated on Mt. Gyejok and Mt. Wuseong, which are outer forests. Accordingly, the windway forest was planned to spread the cold air to the city center by connecting the cold air generated in the Seosa-myeon forest of Mt. Gyejok and the Namsa-myeon forest of Mt. Wuseong through Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and street forests. After selecting the target area for the wind ventilation forest, a climate map and wind formation function evaluation map were prepared for the area, the status of variation wind profiles (night), the status of fine dust generation, and the surface temperature distribution status were grasped in detail. The wind ventilation forest planning concept and detailed target sites by type were identified through this. In addition, a detailed action plan was established according to the direction of creation and setting of the direction of creation for each type of wind ventilation forest.

We analyzed the recent characteristics of Particulate Matter (PM) including PM10 (PM with diameter of less than 10 ㎛) and PM2.5 (PM with diameter of less than 2.5 ㎛) observed in Busan metropolitan area, and compared them with those measured in Seoul metropolitan area. This analysis includes the monthly, seasonal, and annual variations and differences, in emissions and chemical compositions observed in both Busan and Seoul areas. Synoptic meteorological conditions were investigated at the time when high PM concentrations occurred in each of the two areas. The results showed clearly decreasing trends of annual mean concentrations with strong seasonal variations: lower in summer and higher in winter in both areas. In comparison with Seoul, the seasonal variation in Busan demonstrated relatively lower, but showed greater summer fluctuations than in Seoul metropolitan area. This is implying the importance of secondary generation of PM in summer via active photochemical reaction in Busan area. In high concentration days, Busan's chemical composition of sulfate was higher than that of nitrate in summer, whereas nitrate was higher than sulfate in Seoul. The ratios of NO3- to SO42-(N/S ratio) showed lower in Busan approximately by a factor of 1/2(half of N/S ratio) in Busan compared with that in Seoul. Others such as synoptic characteristics and emission differences were also discussed in this study.

This paper presents a system-independent mobile smart shelter using solar energy technology that can be freely installed in various places, such as parks, countryside, event area, construction area and walking tour places where the system power are difficult to use. The proposed smart shelter is equipped with solar power generation and energy storage devices that is combined with IoT technology to collect indoor and outdoor humidity, fine dust and tourist awareness in real time. It is possible to efficiently manage energy by performing the optimal energy operation during the heat- wave, cold-wave situation and the presence of travelers and it is possible to serve as a shelter for as long as possible without system power.
This study investigated the effect of May 31, 2022 Miryang wildfire on fine particle concentrations in Busan and Gimhae, which are neighboring urban areas. In addition, fine particle characteristics and air pollution concentrations were investigated in Miryang, where haze occurred. The Miryang city wildfire that occurred on May 31, 2022, at 0925 LST, was driven by strong north winds and increased fine particle concentrations in Dongsangdong and Jangyoodong, Gimhae City, which are approximately 35 km to the southeast and south, respectively, of the wildfire occurrence site. Furthermore, the fine particle concentration in Myeongjidong, which is approximately 50 km south-southeast of the wildfire site, exhibited a temporary increase at 1400 LST owing to the effects of wildfire smoke. On the morning of June 1, the day after the fire, the Miryang area had very bad visibility because of the smoke from the fire. Therefore the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in Naeildong, 3 km south of the wildfire site, were 276 ㎍/㎥ and 222 ㎍/㎥, respectively, at 1200 LST. In addition, the gases O3, CO, and SO2 showed high concentrations at the time of haze generation. This study provides insights into policy making in response to the rapid increase in fine dust when wildfire occurs near cities.

With the innovative development of bio, pharmaceutical, and semiconductor technologies, it is essential to demand a next-generation transfer system that minimizes dust and vibrations generated during the manufacturing process. In order to develop dust-free and non-contact transfer systems, the high temperature superconductor (HTS) bulks have been applied as a magnet for levitation. However, sintered HTS bulk magnets are limited in their applications due to their relatively low critical current density (Jc) of several kA/cm2 and low mechanical properties as a ceramic material. In addition, during cooling to cryogenic temperatures repeatedly, cracks and damage may occur by thermal shock. On the other hand, the bulk magnets made by stacked HTS tapes have various advantages, such as relatively high mechanical properties by alternate stacking of the metal and ceramic layer, high magnetic levitation performance by using coated conductors with high Jc of several MA/cm2, consistent superconducting properties, miniaturization, light-weight, etc. In this study, we tried to fabricate HTS tapes stacked bulk magnets with 60 mm × 60 mm area and various numbers of HTS tape stacked layers for magnetic levitation. In order to examine the levitation forces of bulk magnets stacked with HTS tapes from 1 to 16 layers, specialized force measurement apparatus was made and adapted to measure the levitation force. By increasing the number of HTS tapes stacked layers, the levitation force of bulk magnet become larger. 16 HTS tapes stacked bulk magnets show promising levitation force of about 23.5 N, 6.538 kPa at 10 mm of levitated distance from NdFeB permanent magnet.

The influence of discharge conditions, including the resistance of the sparking circuit, the shape of the electrodes and the width of the falling dust on the ignitability of lycopodium streams were investigated. Discharge characteristics and the ignition phenomena were also explored. When a 100 ㏀ resistor was connected in series with the sparking circuit, the lowest level of minimum ignition energy (MIE) was attained for lycopodium streams. Simultaneously, the area where flammable gas generated increased and the duration of flammable gas generation decreased. That is, the ignita-bility of lycopodium streams depended strongly on the discharge power and discharge duration. Electrodes with sharp tips gave smaller MIEs than those with round tips in a capacitive-inductive sparking circuit, while shape made no difference in a capacitive-resistive circuit. Streams that were too narrow required a considerable amount of energy for ignition.

In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured using a proton transfer reaction-time of flight-mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) at the Seoul Metropolitan Area Intensive Monitoring Station (SIMS) in Korea during the summer season of 2018. The results revealed that oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) contributed a large fraction (83.6%) of the total VOCs, with methanol being the most abundant constituent (38.6%). The VOCs measured at SIMS were strongly influenced by local conditions. Non-volatile organic compounds (NVOCs), such as pinene, increased due to northeasterly wind direction in the morning, and OVOCs and anthropogenic VOCS (AVOCs) increased with northwesterly wind direction during the daytime. This was the result of the eastward location of Bukhansan National Park and the westward location of urban area from the SIMS location. The VOCs included abundant oxidized forms of VOCs, which can affect the generation of fine dust through various response pathways in the atmosphere. The real-time measurement technique using PTR-ToF-MS suggested in this study is expected to contribute to an improved scientific understanding of high-concentration fine dust events because the high temporal resolution makes it possible to analyze the variations of VOCs reflected in dynamic events.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is produced by chemical reactions between various precursors. PM2.5 has been found to create greater human risk than particulate matter (PM10), with diameters that are generally 10 micrometers and smaller. Ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are the sources of secondary generation of PM2.5. These substances generate PM2.5 through some chemical reactions in the atmosphere. Through chemical reactions in the atmosphere, NH3 generates PM2.5. It is the causative agent of PM2.5. In 2017 the annual ammonia emission recorded from the agricultural sector was 244,335 tons, which accounted for about 79.3% of the total ammonia emission in Korea in that year. To address this issue, the agricultural sector announced the inclusion of reducing fine particulate matter and ammonia emissions by 30% in its targets for the year 2022. This may be achieved through analyses of its emission characteristics by monitoring the PM2.5 and NH3. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the PM2.5 concentration was measured real-time (every 1 hour) by using beta radiation from the particle dust measuring device (Spirant BAM). NH3 concentration was analyzed real-time by Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS). The concentrations of ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were continuously measured and analyzed for the masses collected on filter papers by ultraviolet photometry and chemiluminescence. CONCLUSION: This study established air pollutant monitoring system in agricultural areas to analyze the NH3 emission characteristics. The amount of PM2.5 and NH3 emission in agriculture was measured. Scientific evidence in agricultural areas was obtained by identifying the emission concentration and characteristics per season (monthly) and per hour.
As part of measures to reduce fine dust, the government is promoting a project to convert the fuel of Yard Tractors(YT, tractors operated at ports), from diesel to LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). While a port having a small number of yard tractors, it is not proper to construct a stationary LNG fueling station and supply LNG to YT due to a problem of BOG (Boil off gas) generation. Therefore, it is necessary to make a regulation and a standard on mobile LNG YT refueling station installation and inspection as an alternative. In this study, we have investigated domestic and foreign mobile LNG refueling cases and refueling standards, including the USA and Europe. In addition, we have suggested the risk reduction method according to the cause after investigation of the cause of LNG accidents. And last, based on the proposed risk reduction measures, we have proposed an amendment to the Regulation of the Urban Gas Business Law in Korea. The proposed mobile LNG YT refueling amendment of the Regulation includes ; maintenance of the safety distance from the protection facility, installation of an interlock device to prevent refueling in places other than the authorized place, installation of the identification system through biometrics, separation of the tank lorry and tow vehicle before refueling, checking the wheel fixed status of tank lorry before refueling, construction of the impounding area, safety measures before, during and after refueling, etc. The safety standards proposed in this study could be used as a reference in establishing standards for mobile LNG vehicle refueling in the near future.
