  • To evaluate the natural decay durability of valuable domestic softwoods which are used for preservative treatment in our country, we carried out decay test by European standard method. Of all test wood species, Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis) showed slightly high natural decay durability compared to other 4 wood species, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), pitch pine (Pinus rigida), Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), and scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). However, all of evaluated domestic softwood species in this study caused high weight losses over about 30% in heartwood by test fungus, Poria placenta. We can hardly expect a good natural decay durability from these softwood species. According to the classification of the natural durability of European standard (EN 350-1), they are classified into "Not durable" or "Slightly durable". Therefore, if using these softwoods as exterior materials, we must do preservative treatment to ensure durability.

  • Although concrete is believed to be a durable material, concrete structures have been degraded by severe environmental conditions such as the effects of chloride and chemical, abrasion, and other deterioration processes. Therefore, durability evaluation has been required to ensure the long term serviceability of structures located in chloride exposed environments. Recently, probability-based durability analysis and design have proven to be reliable for the service-life predictions of concrete structures. This approach has been successfully applied to durability estimation and design of concrete structures. However, currently it is difficult to find an appropriate method engineers can use to solve these probability-based diffusion problems. In this paper, computer software has been developed to facilitate probability-based durability analysis and design. This software predict the chloride diffusion using the Monte Carlo simulation method based on Fick's second law, and provides durability analysis and design solutions. A graphic user interface (GUI) is adapted for intuitive and easy use. The developed software is very useful not only for prediction of the service life but for the durability design of the concrete structures exposed to chloride environments.

  • This paper presents a refined design model for current railroad design code on concrete structures exposed to marine environment. A time-varying diffusion coefficient(D) as well as surface chloride$(C_S)$ and chloride threshold level$(C_{lim})$ are studied. Averaging value of the D with time over exposed duration were used to refined durability design model to consider time dependent characteristic of D. The values for $C_S$ and $C_{lim}$ for the seashore in Korea revised for realistic durability design. The proposed model was verified by the so-called performance-based durability design, which is widely used in recent durability design code. Results show that the current standard specification underestimates durability performances of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, so that the cover depth design using current durability evaluation in the standard specifications is very much conservative. Thus, it is found that proposed durability design models for the railroad design code for railway concrete structures can be used effectively for service life design of concrete structures in marine environment.

  • Recently, interest in maintenance has been increasing due to the enlargement and aging of infra structures. Therefore, a new paradigm is required to secure and improve the durability of structures differentiated from the past. Accordingly, research on smart concrete incorporating the concept of self-healing into concrete is being actively conducted. In this study, the crack healing performance and durability performance of self-healing concrete applied with a hydrogel containing biomineral-forming microorganisms were evaluated. As a result of evaluating the dispersion of the hydrogel in concrete, it was confirmed that the hydrogel was well distributed in concrete matrix with a dispersion coefficient of 0.35 to 0.46. The crack healing performance evaluation was verified by a water permeability test, and showed a recovery rate of 95% or more at the age of 28 days, confirming the applicability of self-healing concrete. The durability performance of self-healing concrete was evaluated in terms of resistance to penetration of chloride ion and freezing and thawing. Regardless of the mixing of the hydrogel, the same level of durability performance was shown for various compressive strength level. Therefore, it was confirmed that the microbial admixture did not affect concrete durability. In the future, long-term crack healing performance and durability verification studies should be supplemented.

  • Recently, research and development of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) membranes are progressing in the direction of thinning to reduce prices and improve performance. Demand for hydrogen-powered vehicles for commercial vehicles is also increasing, and their durability should be five times greater than those for passenger vehicles. Despite the thinning of the membranes, the durability of the membranes must be increased five times, so the improvement of the durability of the membranes has become more important. Since the acceleration durability evaluation time also needs to be shortened, the protocol using oxygen instead of air in the existing protocol was applied to a 10 ㎛ thin membrane to evaluate durability. The accelerated durability test (Open circuit voltage holding) was terminated at 720 hours. If the air-based department of energy (DOE) protocol was used, a lifespan of 450,000 km of driving hours would be expected, with a durability of about 1,500 hours. During the chemical durability evaluation, the active area of the electrode decreased by 51%, suggesting that catalyst degradation had an effect on membrane durability. Reducing the catalyst degradation rate is expected to increase membrane durability.

  • In this study, durability of concrete whose surface were treated by nano-composite hybrid polymer type coatings, which can provide a barrier against the ingress of moisture or aggressive ions to concrete, is discussed. For the durability evaluation of the coated concrete, chloride ponding test, accelerating carbonation test, porosity measurement test, and the SEM test are conducted. As the result of this study, it is found that nano-composite hybrid polymer type coated concrete has a much higher resistance to the ingress of chloride ion, carbon dioxide, moisture and aggressive acid than plain concrete has.

  • The evaluation on performance of gel type penetrative water-repellent for durability progress of concrete structure has carried out in this study. And liquid type waterproof agents have been estimated with same method. Also normal concrete that was not applied water-repellent and waterproof agents have been estimated. As results, the penetrative depth of gel type water-repellent were deeper than that of liquid type waterproof agents and those were superior to these in physical and durable performance.

  • Due to the increased construction of offshore concrete structures and the use of de-icing salts for the purpose of snow removal, the needs for the development of anti-corrosive concrete are increasing. To solve these problems, an evaluation of the mechanical and durability properties for concrete were conducted by mixing modified-sulfur as 0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % cement weight ratio. Both strengths and the properties affecting durability such as water absorption coefficient, chloride ion permeability, accelerated carbonation resistance, rapid freezing and thawing, and chemical resistance were evaluated. All evaluations performed were according to the test specifications associated KS. The results indicate that mixing of modified-sulfur lowed chloride ion permeability and improved chemical resistance.

  • CNG buses were introduced in 2002 to reduce air pollution to the big cities. The durability and safety evaluation were performed for the NGV-2 type cylinders taken from two buses after 30 months of running. No external damage and no internal corrosion was observed on the container surfaces. Defect exceeding the allowable limit was not found in the UT test. Permanent volume expansion was about 1.2% which is much smaller than the required design limit. Cycling test showed no failure after 11,250cycles and burst pressures were still above the maximum design pressure. Both the longitudinal and circumferential failure mode were observed, where both the fracture strengths were far above the design limit. This study showed the present CNG fuel cylinders were safe enough for further usage.
