The effect of different anisotropy and stress ratio on fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated under various stress ratio(R=-0.4, -0.2, 0.2, 0.2, 0.4) using pure titanium sheet used in aerospace, chemical and food industry. The rack closure behavior under constant load amplitude fatigue crack propagation test was examined. Fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN was estimated in terms of effective stress intensity factor range, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$, regardless of various stress ratio but was influenced by anisotropy. Also, it was found that the effect of anisotropy was considerably decreased but still not negligible when he da/dN was evaluated by a conventional parameter, $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E and when the modified da/dN.$\sqrt{\varepsilon}_f$ was evaluated by $\Delta$$K_{eff}$/E. On the other hand, da/dN could be evaluated uniquely by effective new parameter, $\Delta$K$_{eff}$/$sigma_{ys}$, regardless of anisotropy, as int he following equation da/dN=C''[\frac{{\Delta}K_{eff}}{{\sigma}_{ys}}]^{n''}. And effective stress intensity factor range ratio, U was estimated by the following equation with respect to the ratio of reversed plastic zone size, $\Delta r_{p}$ to monotonic plastic zone size, $r_p$ regardless of stress ratio and anisotropy. U=-4.45$(\Delta r_{p}/r_{p})^{2}$+4.1$(\Delta r_{p}/r_{p})$+0.245_{p})$+0.245
Fatigue crack propagation rates and characteristics of the SA516-70 steel which is used for the low temperature pressure vessels, were studied in the room temperature of $10^{\circ}C$ and low temperature ranges of $-10^{\circ}C,\;-30^{\circ}C,\;-50^{\circ}C,\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05. The obtained experimental results are as follows; 1) In the logarithmic relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor K, the linear relationship was obtained up to da/dN > $8{\times}10^3$ mm/cycle in the same of room temperature, but in low temperature case, the relationship was extended to the range of low crack propagation rate. 2) The lower limit stress intensity factor of SA516-70 ${\Delta}K_{th}\;was\;23MPa\sqrt{m}$ and in the case of low temperature $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$, the crack propagation rate da/dN which showed a linear relation, reached rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. As the results, the crack propagation rates of $-50^{\circ}C\;and\;-70^{\circ}C$ were lower than that of room temperature and according to the testing temperature the rates were decreased rapidly to the ${\Delta}K_{th}$. 3) On the relationship between the stress intensity factor ${\Delta}K$ and the track propagation cycle, the stress intensity factors of low cycle region was rapidly increased at low temperature, but ${\Delta}K$ was increased rapidly at room temperature of high cycle. 4) On the relationship between the fatigue crack propagation rate and cycle, the fatigue crack propagation rate showed higher gradient in the room temperature than the low temperature due to the increment in ductility at low temperature.

The pile group foundation is widely used for gravity pier of high-speed railway bridges in China. If a moderate or strong earthquake occurs, the pile-surrounding soil will exhibit obvious nonlinearity and significant pile group effect. In this study, an improved pushover analysis model for the pile group foundation with consideration of pile group effect is presented and validated by the quasi-static test. The improved model uses simplified springs to simulate the soil lateral resistance, side friction and tip resistance. PM (axial load-bending moment) plastic hinge model is introduced to simulate the impact of the axial force changing of pile group on their elastic-plastic characteristics. The pile group effect is considered in stress-stain relations of the lateral soil resistance with a reduction factor. The influence factors on nonlinear characteristics and plastic hinge distribution of the pile group foundation are discussed, including the pier height, longitudinal reinforcement ratio and stirrup ratio of the pile, and soil mechanical parameters. Furthermore, the displacement ductility factor, resistance increase factor and yielding stiffness ratio are provided to evaluate the seismic performance of soil-pile system. A case study for the pile group foundation of a railway simply supported beam bridge with a 32 m-span is conducted by numerical analysis. It is shown that the ultimate lateral force of pile group is not determined by the yielding force of the single one in these piles. Therefore, the pile group effect is essential for the seismic performance evaluation of the railway bridge with pile group foundation.

Buildings made using the locally available clay materials are amongst the least expensive forms of construction in many developing countries, and therefore, widely popular in remote areas. It is despite the fact that these low-strength masonry structures are vulnerable to seismic forces. Since transporting imported materials like cement and steel in areas inaccessible by motorable roads is challenging and financially unviable. This paper presents, and experimentally investigates, adobe masonry structures that utilize the abundantly available local clay materials with moderate use of imported materials like cement, aggregates, and steel. Shake-table tests were performed on two 1:3 reduce-scaled adobe masonry models for experimental seismic testing and verification. The model AM1 was confined with vertical lightly reinforced concrete columns provided at all corners and reinforced concrete horizontal bands (i.e., tie beams) provided at sill, lintel, and eave levels. The model AM2 was confined only with the horizontal bands provided at sill, lintel, and eave levels. The models were subjected to sinusoidal base motions for studying the damage evolution and response of the model under dynamic lateral loading. The lateral forcedeformation capacity curves for both models were developed and bi-linearized to compute the seismic response parameters: stiffness, strength, ductility, and response modification factor R. Seismic performance levels, story-drift, base shear coefficient, and the expected structural damages, were defined for both the models. Seismic performance assessment of the selected models was carried out using the lateral seismic force procedure to evaluate their safety in different seismic zones. The use of vertical columns in AM1 has shown a considerable increase in the lateral strength of the model in comparison to AM2. Although an R factor equal to 2.0 is recommended for both the models, AM1 has exhibited better seismic performance in all seismic zones due to its relatively high lateral strength in comparison to AM2.
In this study, fatigue samples were prepared from cylinder head parts that are actually used in domestic (A) and foreign (B) automobiles; high-temperature, high-cycle, and low-cycle fatigue characteristics were then evaluated and compared. A study on the correlation between the microstructural factor and high temperature fatigue characteristic was attempted. The chemical compositions of the heat resistant aluminum alloys above represented A356 (A) and A319 (B), respectively. The result of the tensile strength test on material B at $250^{\circ}C$ was higher by 30.8MPa compared to material A. On the other hand, elongation was 8.5% higher for material A. At $130{\circ}C$, material B exhibited high fatigue life given high cycle fatigue under high stress, whereas material A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility is increased, material A demonstrated higher fatigue life. Through the observation of the differences in microstructure and the fatigue fracture surface, an attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of the materials was made.
In a nuclear power plant, reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is the primary pressure boundary component that must be protected against failure. The neutron irradiation on RPV in the beltline region, however, tends to cause localized damage accumulation, leading to crack initiation and propagation which raises RPV integrity issues. The objective of this paper is to estimate the integrity of RPV under hot leg leaking accident by applying the finite element analysis. In this paper, a parametric study was performed for various crack configurations based on 3-dimensional finite element models. The crack configuration, the crack orientation, the crack aspect ratio and the clad thickness were considered in the parametric study. The effect of these parameters on the maximum allowable nil-ductility transition reference temperature ($(RT_{NDT})$) was investigated on the basis of finite element analyses.

A finite element model for predicting the entire nonlinear behavior of reinforced high-strength concrete continuous beams is described. The model is based on the moment-curvature relations pre-generated through section analysis, and is formulated utilizing the Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the model is verified with experimental results of a series of continuous high-strength concrete beam specimens. Some important aspects of behavior of the beams having different tensile reinforcement ratios are evaluated. In addition, a parametric study is carried out on continuous high-strength concrete beams with practical dimensions to examine the effect of tensile reinforcement on the degree of moment redistribution. The analysis shows that the tensile reinforcement in continuous high-strength concrete beams affects significantly the member behavior, namely, the flexural cracking stiffness, flexural ductility, neutral axis depth and redistribution of moments. It is also found that the relation between the tensile reinforcement ratios at critical negative and positive moment regions has great influence on the moment redistribution, while the importance of this factor is neglected in various codes.

This study is concerned with structural integrity evaluations for the interference-fit flywheels in reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) of nuclear power plants. Stresses in the flywheel due to the shrinkage loads and centrifugal loads at the RCP normal operation speed, design overspeed and joint-release speed are obtained using the finite element method (FEM), where release of the deformation-controlled stresses as a result of structural interactions during rotation is considered. Fracture mechanics evaluations for a series of cracks assumed to exist in the flywheel are conducted, considering ductile (fatigue) and non-ductile fracture, and stress intensity factors are obtained for the cracks using the finite element alternating method (FEAM). From analysis results, it is found that fatigue crack growth rates calculated are negligible for smaller cracks. Meanwhile, the material resistance to non-ductile fracture in terms of the critical stress intensity factor (K$_{IC}$) and the nil-ductility transition reference temperature (RT$_{NDT}$) are governing factors for larger cracks.
In this article the seismic demand and performance of two recent braced steel frames named steel moment frames with the elliptic bracing (ELBRFs) are assessed through a laboratory program and numerical analyses of FEM. Here, one of the specimens is without connecting bracket from the corner of the frame to the elliptic brace (ELBRF-E), while the other is with the connecting brackets (ELBRF-B). In both the elliptic braced moment resisting frames (ELBRFs), in addition to not having any opening space problem in the bracing systems when installed in the surrounding frames, they improve structure's behavior. The experimental test is run on ½ scale single-story single-bay ELBRF specimens under cyclic quasi-static loading and compared with X-bracing and SMRF systems in one story base model. This system is of appropriate stiffness and a high ductility, with an increased response modification factor. Moreover, its energy dissipation is high. In the ELBRF bracing systems, there exists a great interval between relative deformation at the yield point and maximum relative deformation after entering the plastic region. In other words, the distance from the first plastic hinge to the collapse of the structure is fairly large. The experimental outcomes here, are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
