Phenolic resin used as a precursor of carbonized matrix for carbon-carbon composites was modified by addition of molybdenum disilicide (MoSi$_2$) in various concentrations of 0, 4, 12 and 20% by weight to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites. The green body was manufactured by a prepreg method and was submitted to carbonization up to 110$0^{\circ}C$. In this work, the oxidation behavior of carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ as an oxidation inhibitor was investigated at the temperature range of 600-100$0^{\circ}C$ in an air environment. The carbon-carbon composites with MoSi$_2$ showed a significantly improved oxidation resistance due to both the reduction of the porosity formation and the formation of mobile diffusion barrier for oxygen when compared to those without MoSi$_2$. Carbon active sites should be blocked, decreasing the oxidation rate of carbon. This is probably due to the effect of the inherent MoSi$_2$ properties, resulted from a formation of the protective layer against oxygen attack in the composites studied.
Due to the high compressive and tensile strength of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), UHPC used in steel concrete composite structures provided thinner concrete layer compared to ordinary concrete. This leaded to the headed stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC had a low aspect ratio. In order to systematic investigate the effect of headed stud with low aspect ratio on the structural behaviors of steel UHPC composite structure s this paper firstly carried out a test program consisted of twelve push out specimens. The effects of stud height, aspect ratio and reinforcement bars in UHPC on the structural behaviors of headed studs were investigated. The push out test results shows that the increasing of stud height did not obviously influence the structural behaviors of headed studs and the aspect ratio of 2.16 was proved enough to take full advantage of the headed stud strength. Based on the test results, the equation considering the contribution of weld collar was modified to predict the shear strength of headed stud embedded in UHPC. The modified equation could accurately predict the shear strength of headed stud by comparing with the experimental results. On the basis of push out test results, bending tests consisted of three steel UHPC composite slabs were conducted to investigate the effect of shear connection degree on the structural behaviors of composite slabs. The bending test results revealed that the shear connection degree had a significantly influence on the failure modes and ultimate resistance of composite slabs and composite slab with connection degree of 96% in s hear span exhibited a ductile failure accompanied by the tensile yield of steel plate and crushing of UHPC. Finally, analytical model based on the failure mode of composite slabs was proposed to predict the ultimate resistance of steel UHPC composite slabs with different shear connection degrees at the interface.
The effect of alloying elements(Mn, S, Mo, B) on the high temperature deformation behavior of Fe-29%Ni-17%Co (Kovar) alloy were investigated. And the effect of high temperature oxidation on the hot ductility was also studied. The hot ductility of Kovar alloy was drastically increased with the addition of Mn and lowering of S content. It has been found that the brittle intergranular fracture at high temperature cracking is closely associated with the FeS sulfide along the grain boundary. When Mn was added, the type of sulfide was changed to MnS from FeS and ductile intergranular fracture and transgranular fracture were promoted. The formation of oxide layer was found to have minimized the hot ductility of the Kovar alloy significantly. Grain boundary micro-cracks in the internal oxide region were noted following deformation due to high temperature, one of which acting as a notch that caused the poor hot workability of the oxidized specimen. The addition of Mo to the Kovar alloy could also retard the decrease in the hot ductility of the oxidized specimen through the prevention of notching due to internal oxidation. Hot ductility was remarkably improved by the addition of Boron. The improvement of hot ductility results from the grain boundary migration mainly due to the dynamic recrystallization at lower temperature range ($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$).
This paper introduces a new steel jacketing method for reinforced concrete columns with lap splice and evaluates its performance by a series of axial tests of concrete cylinders. At first, 45 concrete cylinders were fabricated with varying the design compressive strengths of 21, 27 and 35 MPa and, then, the part of them was jacketed with two-split-steel jackets under lateral confining pressure. The parameters in the first test were the steel jacket's thickness and the existence of adhesive between steel and concrete surface. In the second test, whole steel jackets were used to wrap cylinders with lateral pressure. Also, a double-layer jacket consisted of two steel plates was introduced; a cylinder was jacketed by two steel plates one after another. The effect of the new method was verified through comparing the results of the compressive tests for plain and jacketed cylinders. The steel jacket built following the new method showed good results of increasing the compressive strength and ductility of the jacketed cylinders with respect to the plain cylinders. The thicker steel jackets showed the more increased compressive strength, and the ductility at failure depended on the welding quality on steel jackets. The adhesive between steel and concrete surface reduced the confining effect of the steel jackets. The whole jacket showed more ductile behavior than the two-split jackets. The double-layered jackets were estimated to possess an equal performance to that of a single steel jacket having the same thickness of the double-layered jacket. Finally, the experimental results were compared with the constitutive model of steel-jacketed concrete; which showed a good agreement between the experimental results and the models.

In this study, to repair damaged economizer fin tubes on ships, sealing treatment was performed after applying arc thermal spray coating technology using Inconel 625. A solid particle erosion (SPE) experiment was conducted according to ASTM G76-05 to evaluate the durability of the substrate, thermal spray coating (TSC), and thermal spray coating+sealing treatment (TSC+Sealing) specimens. The surface damage shape was observed using a scanning electron microscope and 3D laser microscope, and the durability was evaluated through the weight loss and surface roughness analysis. Consequently, the durability of the substrate was superior to that of TSC and TSC+Sealing, which was believed to be owing to numerous pore defects in the TSC layer. In addition, the mechanism of solid particle erosion damage was accompanied by plastic deformation and fatigue, which were the characteristics of ductile materials in the case of the substrate, and the tendency of brittle fracture in the case of TSC and TSC+Sealing was confirmed.
This paper investigates strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of geogrid mixing reinforced lightweight soil. The lightweight soil was reinforced with geogrid in order to increase its compressive strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions including cement content, initial water content, air content and geogrid layer and then unconfined compression tests were carried out. From the experimental results, it was found that unconfined compressive strength as well as stress-strain behavior of lightweight soil was strongly influenced by mixing conditions. The more cement content that is added to the mixture, the greater its unconfined compressive strength. However, the more initial water content or the more air foam content, the less its unconfined compressive strength. It was observed that the compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil increased reinforcing effect by the geogrid for most cases. Stress-strain relation of geogrid mixing reinforced lightweight soil showed a ductile behavior rather than a brittle behavior. In reinforced lightweight soil, secant modulus ($E_{50}$) also increased as its compressive strength increased due to the inclusion of geogrid.
Detailed mapping along the Keumwang fault reveals a complex history of multiple brittle reactivations following late Jurassic and early Cretaceous ductile shearing. The fault core consists of a 10~50 m thick fault gouge layer bounded by a 30~100 m thick damaged zone. The Pre-cambrian gneiss and Jurassic granite underwent at least six distinct stages of fault movements based on deformation environment, time and mechanism. Each stage characterized by fault kinematics and dynamics at different deformation environment. Stage 1 generated mylonite series along the Keumwang shear zone by sinistral ductile shearing during late Jurassic and early Cretaceous. Stage 2 was a mostly brittle event generating cataclasite series superimposed on the mylonite series of the Keumwang shear zone. The roundness of pophyroclastes and the amount of matrix increase from host rocks to ultracataclasite indicating stronger cataclastic flow toward the fault core. At stage 3, fault gouge layer superimposed on the cataclasite generated during stage 2 and the sedimentary basins (Umsung and Pungam) formed along the fault by sinistral strike-slip movement. Fragments of older cataclasite suspended in the fault gouge suggest extensive reworking of fault rocks at brittle deformation environments. At stage 4, systematic en-echelon folds, joints and faults were formed in the sedimentary basins by sinistral strike-slip reactivation of the Keumwang fault. Most of the shearing is accommodated by slip along foliations and on discrete shear surfaces, while shear deformation tends to be relatively uniformly distributed within the fault damage zone developed in the mudrocks in the sedimentary basins. Fine-grained andesitic rocks intruded during stage 4. Stage 5 dextral strike-slip activity produced shear planes and bands in the andesitic rocks. ESR(Electron Spin Resonance) dates of fault gouge show temporal clustering within active period and migrating along the strike of the Keumwang fault during the stage 6 at the Quaternary period.

This paper presents a beam element capable of conducting material and geometric nonlinear analysis for applications requiring the ultimate behavioral analysis of structures with composite cross-sections. The element formulation is based on co-rotational kinematics to simulate geometrically nonlinear behaviors, and it uses the fiber section method to calculate the stiffness and internal forces of the element. The proposed element was implemented using an in-house numerical program in which an arc-length method was adopted to trace severe nonlinear responses(such as snap-through or snapback), as well as ductile behavior after the peak load. To verify the proposed method of element formulation and the accuracy of the program that was used to employ the element, several numerical studies were conducted and the results from these numerical models were compared with those of three-dimensional continuum models and previous studies, to demonstrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the element. Additionally, by evaluating an example case of a frame structure with a composite member, the effects of differences between composite material properties such as the elastic modulus ratio and strength ratio were analyzed. It was found that increasing the elastic modulus of the external layer of a composite cross-section caused quasi-brittle behavior, while similar responses of the composite structure to those of homogeneous and linear materials were shown to increase the yield strength of the external layer.

Analysis has been performed for the penetration of a long-rod into MMC/Ceramic layered armour system with several shot test and a series of simulations. Two types of MMC plate have been fabricated by a liquid pressing method; A356/45%vol.%SiCp with a uniform distribution of SiC particle and Al7075/45%vol.B4Cp with B4C particle. The mechanical properties were measured with the high-speed split Hopkins bar test, hardness test and compression test. The popular Simplified Johnson-Cook model was adopted to represent the material characteristics for FEM simulations. The performance of the MMC applied armour system has been made by comparing with the semi-infinite mild steel target using the depth of penetration(DOP). The results show that placing ceramic front layer provides a certain gain in protection, and that placing another ductile front layer provides a further gain. The application of MMC is found to be attractive.

The objective of this study is to establish the fundamental design data for axial load-displacement relationship under axial monotonic or cyclic responses of seismic damping·isolation (SDI) units developed for ceiling structures. The main parameters include the installation of a spring, the number of rubber layer, prestress stress of bolts for connector between the spring and rubbers, and loading type. Test results showed that SDI units with a spring in the core and higher prestress stress of bolts tended to be higher stiffness at the ascending branch and more ductile behavior at the descending branch. This trends more notable for the specimens under monotonic load rather than cyclic loads. Consequently, the energy dissipation of SDI unit can be optimally designed with the following conditions: installation of a spring within 3-layer rubbers and prestress applied to the bolts at 10% of their yielding strength . When compared with the experimental tension capacity of the developed SDI units, the predictions by JIS B 2704-1 and KDS 31 00 are conservative under monotonic loading but higher by approximately 10% under cyclic loading.
