  • A laboratory scale fluidized bed reactor was developed to treat the combustion characteristics of some fuels (wood, paper sludge, refuse derived fuel). The aims were to introduce the means of experiment and interpretation of the results and finally determine the particle characteristics on the pyrolysis and combustion process of the fuel. A single particle combustion process in the fluidized bed was closely observed. Understanding experimental facility characteristics and determining parameters were also carried out. The fuel combustion processes were observed by carbon conversion rate, recovery and mean carbon conversion time. They were estimated with the CO, $CO_2$ gas concentration monitored at the exit of the combustor. Fuel drying and pyrolysis process were governed by temperature distribution in the fuel particle. There was a significant overlap of the drying and devolatilization. However, transition process from devolatilization to char combustion seemed to be determined by mechanical solidity of the fuel particle after devolatilization process.

  • Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) quickly attenuate or are killed during the freeze-drying process and storage. The effect of some natural polysaccharides, which are known as potent antitumor and immunomodulating substances, on the viability of the LAB, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium breve, on freeze-drying and storage were investigated. Among the polysaccharides tested, red ginseng polysaccharide (RGP) and chitosan significantly inhibited the cell death of the LAB during freeze-drying, and fucoidan and RGP most potently protected the cell death of the LAB during storage. The stabilities of the LAB on the addition of RGP and fucoidan were comparable to that of skimmed milk. However, white ginseng polysaccharide (WGP) did not promote storage stability. When 5% skimmed milk/5% RGP treated LAB were freeze-dried and stored, their viabilities were found to be significantly higher those treated with 5% or 10% RGP. The stabilizing effect of 5% RGP/5% skimmed milk during LAB freeze-drying and storage stability was comparable to that of treatment with 10% skimmed milk. Based on these findings, we believe that RGP beneficially improves the stability of LAB during the freeze-dry process and storage.

  • The drying shrinkage of concrete has a close relation to the water movement. Since the diffusion process of water in concrete is strongly dependent on the temperature and the pore humidity, the process is highly nonlinear phenomena. This study consists of two parts. The first is the development of a finite element program which is capable of simulating the rnoisture distri- ,bution in concrete, and the other is the estimation of the differential drying shrinkage and stress considering creep by using the modified elastic modulus due to inner temperature change and maturity. It is shown that the analytical results of this study are in good agreement with experlimental data in the literatures, and results calculated by BP-KX model. The internal stress caused by moisture distribution which was resulted from the diffusion process, was calculated :quantitatively. The tensile stress which occured in the drying outer zone mostly exceeded the tensile strength of concrete, and necessarily would result in crack formation.

  • Peony is a medicinal herb which have utilized widely as chineses medicine. The paeoniflorin is the predominant component In peony root, monoterpene glucoside containing pinane structure. The effective components were extracted with the cold water from the intact peony roots, and effectively extracted with 70% ethanol from the dry powder of peony roots. The changes of paeoniflorin contents were investigated during the drying process of peony roots and processing of peony extract by the heat-treatment. Air-drying was the best condition for the preservation of paeoniflorin content among the drying processes of peony roots. But convective drying at 6$0^{\circ}C$ was recommended for the drying process of peony roots in large scale. The paeoniflorin in peony extracts was not destroyed by the treatment at 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs, but destroyed 30%, 28% and 40% of paeoniflorin by treatment at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs, 115$^{\circ}C$ and 121$^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes, respectively. The paeoniflorin was continueously extracted for 4 hrs from the dry pieces of peony roots(0.5$\times$0.5$\times$0.5cm) in boiling water but destroyed gradually after 4 hrs at 10$0^{\circ}C$. Paeoniflorins in 70% ethanol extracts of peony root were not destroyed at all in the process of concentration to dry powder at 60"C on vacuum.cuum.

  • In this study, the cause of the decrease in transmittance of the outer lens among the causes of the decrease in the amount of light in the automobile headlamp was identified, and the improvement method was selected to determine the effect. The causes of defects that lower the transmittance of the outer lens are divided into a moisture problem and a haze problem. The moisture problem is caused by the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the head lamp, and the haze problem occurs when the heat inside the head lamp evaporates the haze component contained in the plastic material and attaches it to the outer lens. In order to improve the haze problem that occurs in plastic raw materials, the structures of the bulb light source type headlamp and the LED chip light source type headlamp were analyzed. Among them, the housing material of the LED chip light source type headlamp, which is structurally prone to haze gas, was selected as the test target. In the mass-production injection process of the housing, the drying process was selected as a method to minimize haze gas without adding a separate production process. After extracting a sample every drying time at a constant drying temperature, the sample was put into a haze tester and the residual amount of haze gas was measured. As a result, it was confirmed that the residual amount of Haze gas in the material decreased as the drying time increased.

  • The drying is a process that involves coupled and simultaneous heat and mass transfer. When a wet solid is subjected to thermal drying, two processes occur simultaneously. Drying is classified according to heat transfer characteristics in terms of conduction, convection and radiation. In thermal drying, radiation is easier to control than conduction and convection drying and involves a relatively simple structure. In this study, we measured energy consumption, surface hardness of paint and surface gloss with variation of surface temperature of drying materials and drying time. Drying characteristics and energy consumption between heating panels and hot air heating have been presented. The present study shows that a dryer using heating panels is more effective than a hot air dryer from the viewpoint of energy conservation. The hot air dryer, however, was not optimized and more studies on various parameters related to drying will need to be investigated for definite comparison of drying characteristics of the dryers. The result, even if limited, would present the effective availability of paint drying.

  • A microcomputer-based on-line monitoring and controlling system was built and applied to the dehycration operation. Drying conditions-drying temperatures and air velocities-were successfully controlled by the control deveices incorporated on/off realy and thyristor, and with the high language program. Drying variables-temperature in drier and weight loss of radish slice were accurately measured and acquisited. The computer-based drying system effectively saved the man power required to measure and record data during the drying period and also made possible to conduct the process undisturbed for long period. The drying rate curves of radish at various drying conditions were obtained from automatic data analyzing program. And also the computer programmed control made possible to investigate the effect of air velocity change during the drying period. The dynamic change of air velocity of from one to another level could be performed and affected markedly the drying rate at first stages of drying, but no significant effect were found in falling rate period.

  • This paper suggests the optimal conditions for the laundry to prevent from the electrostatic charge by the evaluation of the electrostatic characteristics in the full process of washing and drying. Cotton, nylon, and polyester fabrics were used as test washing specimens. Detergent and softener were used under the standard washing cycle, and then the electrostatic characteristics of laundry were measured. The results showed that the moisture regain decreased and the electrostatic charge increased with the drying time. It was observed that the specimen fabrics were already dried up before the standard drying cycle was finished. Consequently, the excessive drying caused a generation of electrostatic charge due to the removal of the trace of moisture remaining and the excessive friction. Especially, the softener played an important role to prevent from a generation of electrostatic charge, whose insertion was more effective in the drying than in the rinsing process. It was also shown that the electrostatic charge could be decreased by drying the fabrics of one kind. On the other hand, for drying the mixed kinds of fabrics, the electrostatic charge increased remarkably. Therefore we suggest that the laundry be classified according to the kinds of fiber, and then be washed and dried before excessive drying to reduce electrostatic charge And further, a proper use of softener is effective to reduce electrostatic charge.

  • Contents of compounds in Rehmanniae Radix change depending on the number of steaming and drying and the drying method. In this study, as an impregnation method for dried Rehmanniae Radix, takju impregnation and cheongju impregnation were carried out and steaming and drying were repeated for 9 times. The changes of 5-HMF and catalpol contents were analyzed according to the number of repetition times to investigate which stage of steaming and drying is preferable. Also, total nitrogen, crude fat, ash, and crude fiber were measured to analyze changes in general components. 5-HMF was not detected in dried Rehmanniae Radix. As a result of repetitive steaming and drying, the content of 5-HMF increased only slightly from 1 to 4-times steaming and drying but increased significantly from 5-times. The catalpol in dried Rehmanniae Radix was not detected after 5 times of steaming and drying. Sucrose, maltose, and glucose were included in dried Rehmanniae Radix before steaming and drying. However, after the process in both Takju impregnation and Cheongju impregnation, galactose and fructose tended to decrease after production and sucrose and glucose tended to decrease after the increase. In this study condition, 6-times and more steaming and drying were appropriate process which met the content criteria (not less than 0.1%) of the Korean Pharmacopoeia (8th edition) for 5-HMF, an index component for quality control of Rehmanniae Radix Preparata.

  • Red pine(Pinus densiflora) square timbers with 14.0 cm and 16.5 cm of face size and 24 m long were dried in a vacuum-press kiln and in a radio-frequency/vacuum(RF/V) kiln to compare drying rate, moisture content(MC) distribution and specific energy. RF/V drying rate was higher than vacuum-press drying rate. The effect of size of cross section on the RF/V drying rates were more pronounced than those of vacuum-press drying. The longitudinal- and the transverse MC distribution of dried square timber showed convex profile for the vacuum-press drying and concave profile for the RF/V drying. Moisture gradient of width direction was similar to the thickness direction in vacuum-press dried square timber and was more slight than that of the thickness direction in the RF/V dried large square timber. The specific energy consumption curve increased as MC decreased. Specific energy(kWh/kg of water evaporated) of the vacuum-press process required more than that of the RF/V process.
