The drying characteristics of fluidized bed drying with different drying conditions using naked barley were carried out. This fluidized drying mechanism of naked barley was consisted of consecutive two falling rate parts, first falling rate period and second falling rate period without showing constant rate period. The drying rate constant was increased with decreasing charged amount and relative humidity and increasing air temperature and air velocity. Since the drying rate constant expressed by Arrhenius type equation in the falling rate period showed good linearity, the falling rate period was considered as the controlling step. The activation energy of first falling step was 1,900 cal/gmol, while for second falling step the values showed 2,500 cal/gmol.
Drying shrinkage of concrete occurs due to the loss of moisture and thus, it is controlled by moisture diffusion process. On the other hand, the shrinkage causes cracking of concrete and affects its moisture diffusion properties. Therefore, moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage are two coupled processes and their interactive effect is important for the durability of concrete structures. In this paper, the two material parameters in the moisture diffusion equation, i.e., the moisture capacity and humidity diffusivity, are modified by two different methods to include the effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture diffusion. The effect of drying shrinkage on the humidity diffusivity is introduced by the scalar damage parameter. The effect of drying shrinkage on the moisture capacity is evaluated by an analytical model based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics and minimum potential energy principle for a two-phase composite. The mechanical part of drying shrinkage is modeled as an elastoplastic damage problem. The coupled problem of moisture diffusion and drying shrinkage is solved using a finite element method. The present model can predict that the drying shrinkage accelerates the moisture diffusion in concrete, and in turn, the accelerated drying process increases the shrinkage strain. The coupling effects are demonstrated by a numerical example.
Purpose: Drying is one of the most widely used methods for preserving agricultural products or food. The main purpose of drying agricultural products is to reduce their water content for minimizing microbial spoilage and deterioration reaction during storage. Methods: Although numerous drying methods are successfully applied to dehydrate various agricultural products with little drying time, the final quality of dried samples in terms of appearance and shape cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, based on published literature, this review was conducted to study the drying characteristics of various agricultural products when different drying methods were applied. Results: An increase in the drying power of sources-for example, increase in hot air temperature or velocity, infrared or microwave power-and the combination of drying power levels can reduce the drying time of various agricultural products. In addition, energy efficiency in drying significantly relies on the compositions of the dried samples and drying conditions. Conclusions: The drying power source is the key factor to control entire drying process of different samples and final product quality. In addition, an appropriate drying method should be selected depending on the compositions of the agricultural products.
Effects of physical properties of garlic paste and freeze dry control parameters on the sublimation drying time were investigated to verify optimal operating method in freeze drying. A mathematical model of freeze drying by sublimation was suggested and used to estimate the drying time of garlic paste. Under various conditions, the drying time of garlic paste was calculated using the computer program for the suggested model. Among the physical properties of garlic paste, melting temperature was evaluated the most important factor in affecting the drying time. In supplying methods of the required heat energy for sublimation, it would be the best way to control the upper plate temperature and the lower plate temperature independently.
In this study, drying kinetics of onion slices was examined in a laboratory scale vacuum dryer at an air temperature in a range of $50-70^{\circ}C$. Moisture transfer from onion slices was described by applying the Fick's diffusion model, and the effective diffusivity was calculated. Temperature dependency of the effective diffusivity during drying process obeyed the Arrhenius relationship. Effective diffusivity increased with increasing temperature and the activation energy for the onion slices was estimated to be 16.92 kJ/mol. The experimental drying data were used to fit 9 drying models, and drying rate constants and coefficients of models tested were determined by non-linear regression analysis. Estimations by the page and Two-term exponential models were in good agreement with the experimental data obtained.

The purpose of this study is to predict the performance of a cyclone drying machine and air ejector used in drying applications. This paper deals with optimization of the geometry of the ejector for sludge drying using computational fluid dynamics. To facilitate the design of a jet ejector for air drying machines, a numerical model of simultaneous mass and heat transfers between the liquid(sludge) and gas(air) phases in the jet ejector was developed. The steady-state model was based on unidimensional balance equations of mass, energy and momentum for the liquid and gas phases. It was shown that the optimum condition to minimize pressure and momentum loss of air in the ejector was d=220mm. It was found that sludge particles inside the cyclone was smoothly discharged by the conical wedge installed on the bottom of the cyclone.
The greenhouse bulk curing and drying system utilization of the direct solar energy was tested to evaluate that how much fuel could be saved for curing flue-cured tobacco at the Dae Gu Experiment Station (North latitude : $35^{\circ}$49'), in 1979-1982. The air temperature and total radiation were 19.0 to 38.5$^{\circ}C$ and 1311.0 to 1412.7 cal/$\textrm{cm}^2$/day during the 4 replicated curing test, respectively. The greenhouse bulk curing and drying system was able to cut fuel consumption by 32% compared with the conventional bulk curing barn. We could obtain almost same utilization efficiency of solar energy in 1982 compare with normal year, mainly increasing the heat receiving area.
Because lotus root has a short shelf life, the quality easily deteriorates. Thus, the harvested lotus roots are processed into a variety of products. Drying is one of the simplest food preservation methods, which can increase food stability. However, the convective drying method takes a long time and requires high energy consumption. Combination drying methods have emerged to overcome the limitations of the convective drying method. This study investigated the drying characteristics of lotus root and determined the optimal drying model of lotus root depending on the microwave and hot-air combination drying conditions. The lotus root slices (5 mm in thickness and 40 mm in diameter) were dried by different drying conditions that were combined with three microwave power levels (50, 100, and 150 W) and two hot air temperatures (50 and 60℃) at a velocity of 5 m·s-1. Eight drying models were tested to evaluate the fit to the experimental drying data, and the effective moisture diffusion (Deff) values of the lotus root slices dried by combination drying were estimated. The combination drying time of the lotus root was significantly reduced with the high air temperature and microwave power. The effective moisture diffusion (Deff) of lotus root was more affected by the air temperature than microwave power intensity. Logarithmic model was most suitable to describe the drying curve of lotus root in the microwave-hot air combination drying method.

An attempt was made to measure the availability of waste heat, released from the cooling system of a small engine, which can be utilized for grain drying. An engine powered flat-bed rough rice dryer was constructed and the performance of the dryer with available engine-waste heat was analyzed for 10 , 20, 30 and 40 cm rough rice bulk depths with a constant dryer base area of 0.81$m^2$/min. The waste heat was sufficient to increase the drying air temperature 7 to 12$^{\circ}C$ at an air flow rate of 8.8 to 5.7㎥/min, while the average ambient temperature and relative humidity were 24$^{\circ}C$ and 70%. The minimum energy requirement was 3.26 MJ/kg of water removed in drying a 40 cm deep grain bed in 14h. A forty to fifty centimeter deep grained seems to be optimum in order to avoid over-drying in the top layers. On the basis of minimum energy requirement (3.26 MJ/kg ) , an estimation was made that the waste heat harvest from an engine of a power range of 1 to 10.5PS can dry about 0.1 to 1 metric on of rough rice from 23% to 15% m.c. (w.b) in 12 h at an average ambient temperature and relative humidity of $25^{\circ}C$ and 80%, respectively. The engine-waste heated grain dryer can be used in the rural areas of non industrialized countries where electricity is not available.
