This study is mainly concerned with the friction and wear properties for the specimens of crank shaft which are made of ductile cast iron. The friction and wear tests were carried out for the nor-malized ductile cast iron specimens and their properties were compared with each other at reheat-ing temperatures(550^{\circC,\; 600^{\circ}C,\; 650^{\circ}$) and in dry condition at different friction velocity(0.94 m/s 1.88m/s 2.83m/s) range. After austenized at $910^{\circ}C$ it is observed that the higher the reheating temperature is the hardness becomes decrease which is supposedly attributed to the fact that the amount of pearlite austenite matrix is rduced by reheating after normalizing and that as the reheating temperature goes up the pearlite generated is less and the interval between the pearlites were widened at last to make pearlite globular. At the low velocity the friction coefficient increase in the beginning and gets stabilized as the sliding distance increases. As the friction velocity grows the friction coefficient decreases suppos-edly since the abrasive wear is heavier at low velocity than at the high velocity as the friction tem-perature at low velocity is lower than at high velocity.
This paper deals with the effects of counterpart materials on the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings. STS316 powders were flame-sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using the applied loads of 15 N. AISI52100, $Al_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$ and $Si_3N_4$ balls were used as counterpart materials. Wear behavior of STS316 coatings against different counterpart materials were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the wear behavior of thermally sprayed STS316 coatings strongly depends on the type of counterpart material. Dominant wear mechanism was similar for all studied materials as failure of adhesion film except for Si3N4 used as counterpart material. In the case of Si3N4 used as counterpart material, dominant wear mechanism was abrasion.
The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the endurance against Al alloy melts and wear resistance of an in-situ synthesized titanium matrix composite (TMC) sleeve for aluminum alloy die-casting. The conventional die-casting shot sleeve material was STD61 tool steel. TMCs have great thermal stability, wear and oxidation resistance. The in-situ reaction between Ti and $B_4C$ leads to two kinds of thermodynamically stable reinforcements, such as TiBw and TiCp. To evaluate the feasibility of the application to a TMCs diecasting shot sleeve, the interfacial reaction behavior was examined between Al alloys melts with TMCs and STD61 tool steel. The pin-on-disk type dry sliding wear test was also investigated for TMCs and STD61 tool steel.
With the recent remarkable improvements in the average speeds of contemporary trains, a necessity has arisen for the development of new friction modifiers to improve adhesion characteristics at the wheel-rail interface. The friction modifier must be designed to reduce slippage or sliding of the trains' wheels on the rails under conditions of rapid acceleration or braking without excessive rolling contact wear. In this study, a novel composite material consisting of metal, ceramic, and polymer is proposed as a friction modifier to improve adhesion between wheels and rails. A blend of Al-6Cu-0.5Mg metallic powder, $Al_2O_3$ ceramic powder, and Bakelite-based polymer in various weight-fractions is hot-pressed at $150^{\circ}C$ to form a bulk composite material. Variation in the adhesion coefficient is evaluated using a high-speed wheel-rail friction tester, with and without application of the composite friction modifier, under both dry and wet conditions. The effect of varying the weighting fractions of metal and ceramic friction powders is detailed in the paper.
To determine the shallow subsurface structure and sliding surface of land creeping in 2016 at Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, geophysical surveys (electric resistivity, and refraction seismic methods, borehole televiewer) and slope stability analysis were conducted. The subsurface structure delineated with borehole lithologies and seismic velocity structures provided the information that the sediment layer on the top of the slope was rather as thick as 20 m and the underlying weathered rock (anorthosite) was thinner than 1 m. Based on the tension cracks observed during the geological mapping, televiewer scanning was performed at the borehole BH-2 and detected the intensive fracture zones at the ground-water level, associated with the slip weak zones mapped in dipole-dipole electrical resistivity section. Downslope sliding and slightly upward pushing at the apex of high resistive bedrock explains the curved slip plane of the land creeping. Such a convex structure might play a role of natural toe abutment for preventing the downward development of slip weak zones. In slope stability analysis, the safety factors of the slip weak zone are calculated with varying the groundwater levels for dry and rainy seasons and the downslope is founded to be unstable with safety factor of 0.89 due to fully saturated material in rainy season.
Heaving of road and subsidence of slope took place at the Wiri region of the local highway 999 in Gyeongsangbukdo, Korea after heavy rain in the next year of construction. Although the state government had performed remedial treatments by reducing the angle and the height of the slope, deformation had never stopped. Therefore, we have preformed the analysis of deformation and stabilityof the slope. Study area consists of the Cretaceous shale, siltstone and sandstone and two faults are found. The major deformation occurred by sliding of rock mass along faults after heavy rain because not only thepore pressure at the fault plane and the unit weight of sliding mass increased, but did the shearstrength of saturated fault clay become very low. The decrease in shear strength of saturated fault clayis the major factor among the reasons for deformation. Numerical simulations using limit equilibriummodel, finite difference model and finite element model were performed for eight cross sections.Although safety factors are above 1.7 during the dry season, they become below 1.0 when groundwaterlevel raises to surface. The maximum displacement is about 15-3Ocm. However, safety factors increasedto above 2.4 and the maximum displacement is below 2.08cm after remedial treatment, Indicating thatthe slope becomes stable.
Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The sliding of cut slope frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. The study in this paper shows that mudstone having enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD (percussion rotary drill) steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity. Field test has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, confirmed by the static load test.

An electromagnetic shielding doorset must satisfy requirements associated with both mechanical strength/durability and electromagnetic shielding. Among the primary components of the doorset, a finger strip-a leaftype spring normally made of beryllium copper-is a core part to shield electromagnetic waves as well as to endure repetitive dry sliding friction. This study presented a reliability demonstration test method for the doorset system and, by a simple and simultaneous implementation, of the replacement interval of the finger strip. A rigorous evaluation for the qualification of maintenance or replacement interval is included in the reliability demonstration test of any series system that holds critical maintenance sub-units.
The friction behaviors of bulk amorphous thermal spray coating (BAC) and second phase-reinforced composite coatings using a high velocity oxy-fuel spraying process were investigated using a ball-on-disk test rig that slides against a ceramic ball in an atmospheric environment. The surface temperatures were measured using an infrared thermometer installed 50 mm from the contact surface. The crystallinities of the coating layers were determined using X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of the coating layers and worn surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that the friction behavior of the monolithic amorphous coating was sensitive to the testing conditions. Under lower than normal loads, a low and stable friction coefficient of about 0.1 was observed, whereas under a higher relative load, a high and unstable friction coefficient of greater than 0.3 was obtained with an instant temperature increase. For the composite coatings, a sudden increase in friction coefficient did not occur, i.e., the transition region did not exist and during the friction test, a gradual increase occurred only after a significant delay. The BAC morphology observations indicate that viscous plastic flow was generated with low loads, but severe surface damage (i.e., tearing) occurred at high loads. For composite coatings, a relatively smooth surface was observed on the worn surface for all applied loads.
Sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel disks are applied to mechanical brake systems in high energy moving machines that are associated with recently developed 200km/h trains. This has led to the speed-up of conventional urban rapid transit. In this study, we use a lab-scale dynamometer to investigate the effects of the composition of friction materials on the tribological characteristics of sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel under dry sliding conditions. We conduct test under a continuous pressure of 5.5 MPa at various speeds. To determine the optimal composition of friction materials for 200 km/h train, we test and the evaluate frictional characteristics such as friction coefficients, friction stability, wear rate, and the temperature of friction material, which depend on the relative composition of the Cu-Sn and Fe components. The results clearly demonstrate that the average friction coefficient is lower for all speed conditions, when a large quantity of iron power is added. The specimen of 25 wt% iron powder that was added decreased the wear of the friction materials and the roughness of the disc surface. However when 35 wt% iron powder was added, the disc roughness and the wear rate of friction materials increased By increasing the amount of iron powder, the surface roughness, and temperature of the friction materials increased, so the average friction coefficients decreased. An oxidation layer of $Fe_2O_3$ was formed on both friction surfaces.
