The lapping characteristics of single crystal diamond are studied by considering the crystallographic anisotropy. It is introduced for lapping method to identify crystallographic orientantion by the X-ray diffraction and to measure lapping force ratio, lapping temperature and lapping wear. Diamound bonded wheels are used for lapping under dry condition. On the lapping {110} and {100} planes, it shows remarkable crystallographic anistropy. The lapping force ratio, temperature and wear become gerater with sliding direction along the <100> than along <110>. The results also show that the wear of diamond is influenced by mechanical work(tangential lapping force * lapping distance) as well by lapping speed.
Laboratory tests for single plane sliding were conducted using the model rock slope to investigate the cut slope deformability and failure mechanism due to combined effect of engineering characteristics such as angle of sliding plane, water force, joint roughness and infillings. Also the possibility of prediction of slope failure through displacement monitoring was explored. The joint roughness was prepared in forms of saw-tooth type having different roughness specifications. The infillings was maintained between upper and lower roughness plane from zero to 1.2 times of the amplitude of the surface projections. Water force was expressed as the percent filling of tension crack from dry (0%) to full (100%), and constantly increased from 0% at the rate of 0.5%/min and 1%/min upto failure. Total of 50 tests were performed at sliding angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $35^{\circ}$ based on different combinations of joint roughness, infilling thickness and water force increment conditions. For smooth sliding plane, it was found that the linear type of deformability exhibited irrespective of the infilling thickness and water force conditions. For sliding planes having roughness, stepping or exponential types of deformability were predominant under condition that the infilling thickness is lower or higher than asperity height, respectively. These arise from the fact that, once the infilling thickness exceeds asperities, strength and deformability of the sliding plane is controlled by the engineering characteristics of the infilling materials. The results obtained in this study clearly show that the water force at failure was found to increase with increasing joint roughness, and to decrease with increasing filling thickness. It seems possible to estimate failure time using the inverse velocity method for sliding plane having exponential type of deformability. However, it is necessary to estimate failure time by trial and error basis to predict failure of the slope accurately.

In this study, stability of the new gabion system with vegetation base materials was analysed. New gabion system with vegetation base materials is a new approach which has been developed to achieve lope stabilization and revegetation of forest road cut-slope by making the best use of advantages of gabion systems with vegetation base materials. Results from stability analysis are as follows. For the soil density, the angle of internal friction and unit weight of the rock fill was assumed to be $1.90g/cm^3$, $30^{\circ}$ and $2.30t/m^3$, respectively, the slope stability analysis showed that the new gabion system couldn't require any poles to fix it up, and could keep stable during both rainy and dry seasons. As the results of checks against overturning and sliding, the retaining wall with. the new gabion system could produce suitable factors of safety for overturning and sliding. Vegetation established on the surface of the new gabion systems indirectly can help to increase slope stability by prevention of surface erosion. Consequently, the new gabion system with vegetation base materials could achieve the desired effect on slope stabilization as much as existing gab ion system could do, and could promote rapid establishment of vegetation on cut-slopes.

The dry sliding wear behavior of graphite that is used as the sealing material to cut off hot gas was evaluated as a function of applied load, sliding speed and temperature. The reciprocating wear tests were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperatures. An attempt has been made to develop a mathematical model by response surface methodology and an analysis of variance technique was applied to confirm the validity of the developed model. Also, the wear mechanism was compared through the observation of the worn surface by SEM analysis.
In this paper, the wearing characteristics of current collecting shoes, interruption phenomena and contact resistances between collecting shoes and conductor rails are established as design parameters for development of the third rail current collector. An experimental analysis for established design parameters is performed as the materials of current collector shoe, contact force, sliding velocity and contact condition(dry/wet condition) between current collectors shoe and conductor rails. As a result of this study, the magnitude of contact force is in proportion to the amount of wear in the collecting shoe, but is in inverse proportion to the interruption and contact resistance between the collecting shoe and the conductor rail. And optimal values of design parameters are pre sented through analyzing the experimental results of the amount of wear, interruption and contact resistance.
Objective: This study was performed to explore the effect of different bracket, archwire, and ligature combinations on resistance to sliding (RS) and rotational control in first-order angulation. Methods: Three types of brackets (multi-level low friction [MLF], self-ligating, and conventional brackets) coupled with four nickel-titanium archwires (0.012, 0.014, 0.016, and 0.018-inch diameter) and two stainless steel ligatures (0.20 and 0.25 mm) were tested in different first-order angulations ($0^{\circ}$, $2^{\circ}$, $4^{\circ}$, $6^{\circ}$, $8^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$) by using an Instron universal mechanical machine in the dry state at room temperature. RS value was evaluated and compared by one-way ANOVA. Results: Under the same angulation, the RS values showed the following order: conventional brackets > MLF brackets > self-ligating brackets. The RS was the highest for conventional brackets and showed a tendency to increase. The RS for MLF brackets coupled with thinner archwires and ligatures showed a similar tendency as the RS for the self-ligating bracket. In contrast, the RS for MLF brackets coupled with thicker archwires and ligatures increased like that for conventional brackets. MLF brackets showed the greatest range of critical contact angles in first-order angulation. Conclusions: The RS in first-order angulation is influenced by bracket design, archwire, and ligature dimension. In comparison with self-ligating and conventional brackets, MLF brackets could express low friction and rotational control with their greater range of critical contact angles.
Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers were deposited on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid system of arc ion plating and sputtering techniques. The coatings were prepared with different Si contents to investigate the effect of Si content on their mechanical properties and microstructures. The dry sliding wear experiments were conducted on Ti-AI-Si-N coated WC-Co discs at constant load, 3N, and sliding speed, 0.1 m/s with two different counterpart materials such as steel ball and zirconia ball using a conventional ball-on-disc sliding wear apparatus. In the case of steel ball, the friction coefficient of Ti-AI-Si-N coating layers became lower than that of Ti-AIN coating layers. The friction coefficient decreased with increasing of Si content due to adhesive wear behavior between coating layer and steel ball. On the contrary, in the case of zirconia ball, the friction coefficient increased with increasing of Si content, indicating that abrasive wear behavior was more dominant when the coating layers slid against zirconia ball.
This work approaches the structural performance of masonry arches that have a small ratio between number of vossoirs and span length. The aim of this research is to compare and validate three different methods of analysis (funicular limit analysis F.L.A., kinematic limit analysis K.L.A. and plane stress Finite Element Analysis F.E.A.) with an experimental campaign. 18 failure tests with arches of different shapes and boundary conditions have been performed. The basic failure mechanism was the formation of enough hinges in the geometry. Nevertheless, in few cases, sliding between vossoirs also played a relevant influence. Moreover, few arches didn't reach the collapse. The FLA and KLA didn't find a solution close to the experimental values for some of the tests. The low number of vossoirs and joints become a drawback for an agreement between kinematic mechanism, equilibrium of forces and geometry constraints. FLA finds a lower bound whereas KLA finds an upper bound of the ultimate load of the arch. FEA is the most reliable and robust method and it can reproduce most of the mechanism and ultimate loads. However, special care is required in the definition of boundary conditions for FEA analysis. Scientific justification of the more suitability of numerical methods in front of classic methods at calculating arches with a few vossoirs is the main original contribution of the paper.

This work aims to develop a dry lubricant for oilless bush, especially a solid lubricant, thereby creating a coating method with improved properties of anti-friction and load-carrying capacity without oil lubrication. In this work, spherical-shaped powders of thermosetting resin such as polyimide (PI) are mixed with a binder matrix obtained by mixing a fluorocarbon compound resin such as Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or Ethylene tetra fluoro ethylene (ETFE) with itself or with a non-fluorocarbon thermoplastic resin such as Polyether ether ketone (PEEK). And these dry lubricant mixtures are thickly coated (200-300 mm in the thickness) on the inner surface of the bush by using a wet-typed air-spray deposition method. It was found that the load-carrying capacity of the solid lubricant for excavator bush (60 mm in diameter) that operates under a high load condition (at 40 MPa) is greatly improved owing to the spherical-shaped powders of thermosetting resin. In addition, the coefficient of friction at the sliding surface is also reduced less than 0.1. Thick coating also lowers the contact stress at the edge of a bush that results in better tribological performances. The result suggests that the lubrication performance and durability life of the bush can be remarkably improved even without lubrication (oil or grease).

The purpose of this study presents useful data on the choice or development of floor covering from slip viewpoint by examining closely the impact of the changes in sliding experiments due to the wear of floor covering by walk. The result of wear practical test per ten thousand walks enforces some kind of popular floor covering and measure of coefficient of slip resistance as follows: (1) When surface of floor covering is in the state of wet, the degree of wear doesn't affect greatly in slip. (2) When surface of floor covering is in dry and clean state, most floor coverings have the tendency to lower the coefficient of slip resistance with the amount of walk on it. (3) Change in the tendency of slip resistance by wear appeared mainly due to the differences in the state of floor covering and organic floor covering appeared to have great reduction of coefficient of slip resistance than the inorganic ones. (4) According to the result of investigation on changes in tendency of coefficient of slip resistance due to the increase in the number of walk and if two hundred thousand walks were done, regardless of surface shape or kind of site, etc, the safety of floor covering, in slip viewpoint, greatly reduces.
